1986 Volkswagen Golf GL 1.6 diesel from North America

Summary:

Basic bullet proof transportation

Faults:

Other than the usual maintenance stuff like brakes, struts and exhausts that need replacing once in a while, nothing really.

General Comments:

I loved the car, it was very cheap to run and maintain.

It was very slow, but still fun to drive.

I would still driving the heck out it if it weren't for that sad day when it was t-boned by a red light runner.

1986 Volkswagen Golf C 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Got a lot of street cred and looks good

Faults:

Nothing at all. I only replaced the clutch cable cos it was getting stiff (no sniggering).

General Comments:

Driving seat is uncomfortable and badly designed, so after a bit of driving, my back aches.

The radio is placed in an awkward place. Apart from that, a very good car.

1986 Volkswagen Golf Diesel 1.6 diesel from North America

Summary:

Worth its weight in gold plated latmin

Faults:

A/C clutch gave out at about 200,000.

Replaced right side axle due to a bad C/V joint at 205,000.

Struts at 120,000 miles.

Heater flap to control the heat position, (defrost, vents or floor) broke loose around 100,000 miles. Time consuming repair because the heater core has to be removed.

Factory radio dead around 120,000 miles.

General Comments:

This has been an excellent car and worth every penny I paid when it was new.

The body is a bit rough now due to many winters in Iowa and the road salt eventually gets to everything no matter how much you wash it.

The interior still looks new except for a small tear in the drivers seat.

With almost 220,000 miles, we're still running on the original clutch, and still getting over 40mpg on average.

BUT, it's getting about time to replace this car, I think the fuel injector pump is going out, and the clutch is getting thin. If the body was still in good shape, I wouldn't hesitate to fix these items, but at this point, I'm afraid the body will give out before anything mechanical.

I will probably replace it with a new Golf TDI.

The TDI engines are superb. Make sure you go to www.tdiclub.com sometime, a North American site.

1986 Volkswagen Golf C 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable but slow

Faults:

The heater matrix was leaking, as was the plastic box attached to the engine (part of the cooling system), the former was result of a known Golf mk2 fault in the system - there is a free recall for mk2s. Managed to get VW to pay for a new heater matrix.

Dashboard coolant temperature gauge was faulty.

Driver's seat doesn't go forward (3 door)... something snapped I think.

Interior fan broke (got really loud) - needed a scrapyard replacement..

2 bulbs gone..

1 CV boot needs replacing, nothing too major.

General Comments:

This car is a D reg and seems to go on forever. I do about 65 miles a day in the week, it has never broken down or stalled, and it starts first time everytime.

This version only 4 gears so motorway driving isn't that good if you want to cruise - revs about 4k at 70mph.

Small engine for the car but it handles well.

The pedals are heavy, especially the clutch.

Would recommend covers around the door handles to stop criminals getting in using a screwdriver (scissors in my case) under the door handle.

A fairly heavy car. Much better than equivalent Ford or Vauxhall and looks better too.

Economical, average 42mpg.

Will get a mk2 8v GTi next.

1986 Volkswagen Golf C 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Enjoyable, cheap and reliable motoring

Faults:

Nearly everything on the suspension was severly worn when I got it & after approx £175 all the vital parts were fixed. The heater never worked & the engine radiator gave up after replacing the water pump at 170,000, it was £85 to replace both.

Body was still solid & only had very minor surface rust.

Clutch & gearbox were close to death by 190,000. But the engine was still okay & could do 105mph :o)

General Comments:

It never ever stopped working even after I shamelessly abused the poor thing for it's final 30,000 miles (in 12 months too).

By the end the only parts that were working correctly were the bits I spent around £400 total during the year & servicing, which is costly due to the high cost of parts and lack of any in breakers apart from mine =)
