1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDi 1.9 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Understated luxury

Faults:

Fuel filler door stuck open.

Armrest storage compartment lock broken.

That's it.

General Comments:

Great car. The ride is very Mercedes-like. Definitely a solid German feel.

The motor is a workhorse. I can honestly get 43 mpg highway @ AVERAGE sustained speeds of 80mph plus.

Also, the Monsoon stereo is among the best that I've heard.

Overall, very satisfied with this car. Too bad the V-6 TDi isn't over here!!!

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.9 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

More problems than normal doesn't stop me from really liking the car

Faults:

2 problems with the engine electronics.

Broken interior control knobs.

Broken trunk release cable.

Latch on fuel door sticks.

Wiring problem with the heated seats.

Problem with the clutch mechanism - sticks momentarily when released.

General Comments:

Volkswagen cars since the advent of the Rabbit have always been a pleasure to drive. Better handling than most cars on the road.

The turbo diesel is an exceptional engine both performance and mileage wise. I had wanted a VR6 at first but am more than happy to have purchased a TDI.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta LX 4 door turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

The paint job stinks

Faults:

Paint; The paint is peeling off. The company rep says that it is acid from either bird droppings or acid rain and therefore not covered by the warranty. If that were true all cars would have paint problems. The car is not parked under trees.

General Comments:

If the company will not take care of the paint problem we will not buy another Volkswagen. This is the our second one.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLX 2.8 from North America

Summary:

Fast, luxurious, and superior handling and interior materials..... but falls apart

Faults:

I had my sunroof repaired 5 times. It was mainly the dealer at fault. My biggest problem is that I parked the car in a public space, and when I backed out, the front bumper hit the cement "tire stopper" in the parking space...... AND PULLED THE BUMPER OFF! Now at my expense I must have the bumper replaced that NEVER should have come off.

General Comments:

Great luxury sports sedan at a great price. I paid $24,000 but this car 'feels' the same as a BMW or Mercedes. Great car, BUT I cannot get past the small things that broke on the car, too expensive to fix. I'm going back to Toyota.

There must be some details missing from your bumper story that change the story completely. Most cars I know can have the bumper ripped off if it catches on something and the driver doesn't stop. I think the same thing could have happened to a Toyota or most other cars.

Please correct me if there was more to the story, but I just don't think that it was the fault of the car or the dealership.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong in the 2&1/2 months I have owned this car.

General Comments:

The new Jetta is a really fun car to drive. I can't tell you how many people stare at it on the road. It is also really comfortable since I am only 5ft tall. : )
