"...but German engineering is always awesome"

"awesome" meaning unnecessarily complicated and more expensive to repair? Then yeah.

Nothing isn't needlessly complicated and expensive to fix anymore. Unless you live in America where you have good, alternative parts available cheap. If you can buy a Japanese car new, they never break down. But if you buy them used from 8 years old onwards, it can be surprising how much brand new original parts cost, and access to those components is no less labour-intensive than German cars. Try reaching into bolts to undo without the hands of a midget, or taking off panels with clips on a Japanese car without actually breaking them. Again: Japanese cars are reliable. Maybe their parts are built better. But they are no less complicated and use pretty much the same principles as any European car. Even the French and Italian cars are surprisingly conventional vs. an equivalent Japanese.

Yes, but don’t forget that it’s also tested on monkeys.

Wait wait, don't put all Japanese cars in the same basket. Subaru is one thing, Nissan another one, and Toyota and Honda another one. Not the same engineering; also not the same quality. Take Subaru for example: despite what every Subaru fan will tell, these are cars with transmission and very costly engine issues. Parts are crazy expensive and engine work is horrendous. But again, Subaru owners are the most hardcore fans and they will never tell of any problem - just read their forums to find out the truth.

Nissan are also quite problematic and not always easy to service - Nissan doesn't always design parts for easy access.

Honda and Toyota are easier to service except for the very late Honda turbo engines which have a very complex design. By the way, the latest Honda Civic are terrible in terms of problems, this brand has lost quality in the past years. Like with any brand, you will have fans trying to convince you their car is perfect. Keep in mind, anyone can type anything on their keyboard. If you want to find the real story, you have to search directly on their forums.
