2001 Volkswagen Passat GLX 2.3 V6 from North America

Summary:

OK car

Faults:

Well I just bought the car and the Monsoon audio system is not working properly. It is suppose to be Premium Sound System in which it definately sounds like a regular factory car. The vehicle has 4 tweeters does not have any sound.

General Comments:

This car has a lot of space, the seats are very comfortable, and the looks of the car are great.

I am not sure if I would like to purchase another volkswagon vehicle cause the every dealership that I go to gives a crappy service.

2001 Volkswagen Passat Wagon 1.8t from North America

Summary:

A real bank breaker!

Faults:

Right headlight out after 25K miles

Right headlight went out again around 35K miles.

Interior has started peeling severely. Especially around a/c controls and on interior door handles.

Heater coil under passenger seat became stuck then came unattached when repositioning seat.

Around 42K miles, oil pump went out. Then as a result the turbo went out. (Actually covered under warranty!)

Right headlight went out again around 45K miles. In for repair now.

Now the fuel intake sensor is telling my gauge that I have gas, when, in fact the car is on empty. This resulted in my running out of gas, thus destroying my spark plugs which is costing around $500. In for repair now.

General Comments:

I will never buy another Volkswagen again... no matter how cute they are. My second LEMON!

2001 Volkswagen Passat GLS 2.8 from North America

Summary:

Bad experience with VW and will never buy it again

Faults:

Power steering fluid over flows from the reservoir cap 4 times between Mar 2003 and Jul 2004 (once in Mar, Jul, Sep 2003 respectively and once in Jul 2004). No leak was detected any single time and no way to repeat the problem as mechanics wishes to diagnose the problem. Currently going through trial and error at my own pocket $.

General Comments:

One dealer told me to repeat the problem in order for them to help me out. I was pretty much left helpless.

VW Customer Service helped out in the 3rd overflow incidence last Sep with goodwill warranty. This forth breakdown, I was left alone with only 50-50 cost sharing assistance from the Customer Services. Since I'm out of 2-year warranty 16 month ago, I'm not covered by the lemon law. Living with a car that can break down randomly at any time, yet no problem could be diagnosed - only trial and error to eliminate problem with unlimited cost.

Try Breachment of Warranty Act, it worked for me. However it took 11 months before VW settled.

2001 Volkswagen Passat passat 4 wheel motion v6 from North America

Faults:

The car is a very strong and reliable car. I recently had a problem with the oil consumption. It seems that after every 1000 miles the car loses a quart of oil. The Dealer says this is normal on this car. I'm a little disappointed in that.

General Comments:

I feel that the car shouldn't be losing a quart of oil every 1000 miles. My car has about 20,930 miles on it right now. I am bringing it in for an oil consumption test which is now in the process. They will check the oil every 1000 miles to see what happens.

There is no way on this earth that the car should lose a quart of oil every 1000 miles! You should ask the dealer to let you have that information in writing. Ask VW North America and VW Germany if they have engineered an engine that will lose a quart of oil every 1000 miles as a feature. I don't think so!

This is pure fabrication!

I was told recently by the dealer that VW recommends synthetic oil only. Apparently the 1.8T engine creates sludge with real oil and this can cause the oil pump to go out. Good luck.
