2001 Volkswagen Passat PD 1.9 130bhp turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Never buy a VW EVER!!!

Sensors kept playing up, specialist couldn't find a fault for weeks, glow plugs, burning oil, blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust, suspension, brakes sensors playing up.

In total, for having the car a year, this car cost me £2000. The turbo had to be replaced along with hoses, which was costly.

Would never touch another Volkswagen, even if I was paid.

General Comments:

Yeah OK the car was pretty rapid, it is comfy, and nice to look at, but that's the only things I can say. The car spent more time in the garage than it did on the road.

2001 Volkswagen Passat Highline Black Label 1.9 TDI 130 HP from Netherlands

General Comments:

Love it, at the time I purchased it to get transportation for a few months, however the car turned out to be so good and reliable that I will see the half a million kilometer mark.

With a lub oil consumption of 1 liter per 25000 kilometer, long service intervals and nothing going wrong with the electronics.

A very reliable tool.

The only disappointing thing about the car is its handling, it has absolutely no French or Italian roadholding!

Love the heated seats, the cruise control, and the fuel consumption of 5.8 liters per 100 kilometers.

Service lights.

Fuel problem.

Main agent problems.

Etc etc.

General Comments:

Don't buy a second hand Passat. Mine looked immaculate and had a full service history. One owner. Dealers not too interested in helping.

2001 Volkswagen Passat Sport 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Well worth buying

General wear and tear as you would expect. Snapped a coil spring at 113,000 miles probably due to rusting under the plastic cover. General electrical faults including the engine warning light being on for the last 50,000 miles. Driver window cable snapped due to rust. Front headlights are starting to appear scratched.

General Comments:

Good engine with lots of pull even though it only has 115 BHP. Looks modern and feels well built.

2001 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.6 turbo from North America

It's o.k. to buy once

Mainly the engine emission light goes on for no apparent reason.

The interior lights no longer work.

The rear windshield wiper motor leaks washer fluid which falls on a connector to the real hatch door which makes the boot open light come on until the connector dries out.

General Comments:

The car has been reliable but the issues described above have been annoying.

My wife and I like the way the car rides and drives it's been a fun vehicle but I don't think I'll buy another one. The interior lights should never have quit working.

2001 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T I-4 from North America

Excellent car with a few annoying electronic problems

I had the vacuum hoses replaced around 75,000 miles. I was in an accident, and the car was towed to a repair shop, they claimed the check engine light was on and that the vacuum hoses needed replaced along with accident repairs.

Electronics in the car are spotty like I have heard about all VWs. The gas cap sometimes will take several tries to open, I've spent up to 10 minutes trying to open it but it always opens eventually.

The rear driver's side door randomly loses power, so the locks and windows won't work until the power comes back on.

General Comments:

Great engine and you got to love that turbocharger sound.

Tiptronic automatic transmission is fun to play with on mountain roads.

Car recommends 91 Octane fuel, 87 Octane Minimum. I use 85 Octane (I'm cheap :) and the engine does not knock or ping, but I live over 5,300 feet above sea level and I think the thinner air might have a part in preventing the pinging and knocking.

Seat warmers are amazing and get incredibly hot when they're turned up, works great if you are still waiting for the engine to warm up to turn on the heat.

Handles very well and does OK in the snow.

Have taken the car for four 1/4 mile runs at the race track, and taken it up to top speed several times on a closed track (135mph on the speedometer) and it still runs. It has a durable little engine that keeps on ticking. Maybe I've just gotten lucky though.
