First-my distributor died on me, the second week I had the car. After fixing that, I noticed that the transmission stopped going into 4th gear. I took the car in and found out that the electrical system was malfunctioning-$1600 to fix it. Then my lower radiator hose melted while I was driving and all the fluid poured out and the car overheated. After that everything started falling apart. 2 more hoses melted, power steering fluid seals started leaking; its basically totaled. It failed smog by a bunch, and fixing it would cost more than it is worth, so I'm just dumping the car.
Well a car with 165,000 miles on it that was made in the 80's. I'd say that's damn good! Plus it was an Automatic!
Hi, I also have the same car, but it's an '86, these cars are in fact good, but the both of us are stuck with one problem. Volvo 760's have a B28F engine in them which in fact isn't a Volvo engine at all, it's a Peugeot. That is why the 740 lasts longer than the 760. Mileage should not be that much of a factor, my car only had 195,000 Kilometers and it still broke down. Now if the car is in good enough shape I suggest to look for a 740's engine and replacing it. That is what I'll probably do.
I bought my car over a year ago and payed a little under 3,000 for it. Since then I've had nothing, but problems and have sinked over a thousand in repairs alone. actually the car only had 116,000 miles on it. It finally broke down last week, and I think that I just need to let the car die in peace. Also my whole electrical system is one BIG malfunction.
Well you lot must be doing something bad to these Volvo's because I have a 740 gle estate and a 760 GLE turbo saloon and both where made in 1988 both have over 350,000 on the clock the estate is using the 2.3i b230e and the saloon has the same engine, but with a turbo and both are running fine both used daly and both only need servicing every year they go through tires brake pads and oil like every other car does, but still work fine these cars are built like tanks and will last if looked after.
I own a 1985 760 GLE sedan, I got it 4 years ago... it had 110000 km...yeap...that's right...110000...but still runs like new. It's equipped with the B28A V6 engine and believe me up there... it has never... but has never failed or so... for those of you who've had trouble with your Volvos... be patient and try to fix your ride... because noone in this world builts cars like Volvo!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again... when it comes to 760's, only the 1988-90 models should be considered reliable. Any earlier models used odd fire mechanical fuel injection and bad wiring harnesses. These resulted in premature cam failure and many common electrical problems. I personally have owned an '89 760 GLE for some time now and found it to be the most reliable car ever. Remember... STAY AWAY from any V6 Volvo made before 1988.
I bought a 1987 Volvo 760 GLE a year ago, and am very happy with the vehicle. It only has 190,000 kms on it, and the previous owner (who had it from new) was meticulous in maintaining the car. Apparently all work was done by the local Volvo dealer, and it shows. No rust on the body at all, the leather interior is spotless, and mechanically the car is sound. I have replaced the rear transmission bush and mount, and the two front engine mounts, and will also replace the rear shock absorbers. Apart from that, the car runs smooth and quiet, very comfortable, and a pleasure to drive. This is my third Volvo, and I'm really pleased with it.
Hi All, I have recently purchased a 1988 Volvo 760GLE top of the range and the V6 Engine is starting to fail. I have been advised that the engine was a dud and that I would be better off dropping in a 4Cyl reco Volvo Engine. Has this been done before and if so has it been a success. I read that someone dropped in an engine from a 740 Volvo. I certainly like this car and happy to put in another reco engine. The previous owner was an old man who spent a lot of $s so most of the work has been done. Please help if anyone has some advice. I have been quoted $3000 Aussie to drop in a reconditioned 4cy engine.
