1992 Volvo 940 GL 2.1 from North America

Summary:

The best car I ever owned

Faults:

Had to clean the contacts in the sunroof switch from time to time.

Replaced brakes a couple of times.

Timing belt, hoses, belts, tires, the general stuff.

General Comments:

This was the best car I ever owned, bar none. I should have kept it. The power was OK, not a dragster. The ride was very nice. The best part about this car is that it was made the way a car should be made. Awesome reliability. Volvo hasn't made a car this good since. This was the perfection of years of serving their customers. Since the mid to late nineties Sweden has stopped building the great cars (I have a GM SAAB). This car, the 1992 940GL is one of the best cars of all time.

1992 Volvo 940 GL 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Lasts FOREVER!!

Faults:

This car was given to me by my niece who just got a 1998 S70. This car has been in the family since 2000. Before my niece had it, her parents drove it. So far I have done nothing to it, although it needs front bushes and a new air conditioning unit.

General Comments:

My 940 is white over tan leather. These cars are absolutely beautiful! They were one of the last true Volvo's ever built. The styling and design of the car never goes out of style.

The comfort of the car is amazing, and cruising is smoother than most.

As far as performance goes, I am used to SAAB turbos, so I was a little disappointed, but considering the age and weight, I would say it is pretty good.

I will keep this car as long as it will go. I am planing on purchasing a BMW 740Li and NOT trading my Volvo in. It will be a good extra car. These 940's will last forever, and you will love the interesting door handles inside and out.

Do not hesitate to purchase one regardless of the miles. Reliability on these are excellent. It will get up and go day in and day out.

1992 Volvo 940 2.3 turbo from North America

Summary:

Superb car

Faults:

Water pump fail at 100,000 miles.

Turbocharger start making a whining noise at 125,000 miles.

General Comments:

Great car overall very solid feel.

A little bit under power for the mass,162 hp/3200 lb.

Suspension bushings, sway bars, sport shocks give the car the edge over the Bimmers.

Very easy to maintain, but parts are a little bit expensive, but what european car is not?

1992 Volvo 940 GL 2.3L from North America

Summary:

Reliable to a fault.

Faults:

In over 300,000 miles I have had to replace the timing belt, alternator, and fuel pump. That's it.

General Comments:

I can't stand looking at this car any more. My butt has been in it for over 300,000 miles. Unfortunately, it goes as smooth as the day I bought it 13 years ago, and looks just as shiny. It just won't die, it won't even give a hint of dying, and it's easily good for another 300,000 if I can stand it. I keep thinking I need to get another car, but...why? No rust, no issues, just solid solid solid reliable cost-free transportation.

Have you ever read the book called "Shibumi" by Trevanian? Your attitude toward your Volvo very much reminded me of those of the main character and his gardener attitude toward his Volvo.

I used to kick mine and it wouldn't die either ;) Great book.

1992 Volvo 940 GL 2.3 from North America

Summary:

This is the best car I know of anywhere

Faults:

I have driven this car every day since 1998 (it’s 2006, not far from 2007). I had to replace the fuel pump, air conditioner hoses, radiator, brakes.

General Comments:

This car drives nice. It’s not quick, but, certainly adequate. The best part about this car is the rear wheel drive and the long wheel base. It is the smoothest car I have ever owned. My car has been amazingly reliable. I have driven it over 100,000 miles with no major issues and I bought it used. Of course, I have given this car regular maintenance. I think about selling it from time to time and it just seems kind of insane to sell a car this good. I realize that one day it will quit, but, at this rate I will be like, 100.
