Driver side window has come off its track.
Driver side door handle broke (due to ignorance of the door lock by a friend).
Lifts for the hatchback went out at about 85000 miles.
Right brake light went out.
Left reverse light went out.
Water pump went out at about 78000 miles.
Battery went out at about 80000 miles.
This is the greatest car that I have ever owned. It still gets 38MPG on average.
The suspension is sturdy and quick. The car handles great and corners like a dream.
It is quick off the line for a 3 cylinder and is very capable of maintaining 85-100 MPH on the highway (as long as there is no front wind).
It has a roomy interior and is capable of seating 5 moderately sized people in comfort. The folding rear seat is great for toting abnormally shaped luggage (such as snow-boards, and bicycles).
The little 3 cylinder is the most reliable engine that I have ever seen. I have never had a problem with it starting. Only now, at about 154000 miles, is it starting to show its age. It is starting to lose power and is incapable of running the A/C while parked without stalling the engine.
The seating has a very sporty feel. It has the driver sitting low to the ground in a bucket seat. The seat gives great lower-lumbar and great overall support when making sharp turns or quick maneuvers.
What a great review. I had to laugh at your top two things that went wrong with the car. Window slides off track, and my friend broke my door handle. I got 120,000 miles on my first engine, and 180,000 on the second engine. I am now going to throw another used engine in the car because other than those few things, the Geo metro has had no other problems. This car takes abuse and just keeps on going. everyone laughs at it at work, but they are dropping thousands of dollars into fixing up their, " better" cars, while I have money to go everywhere and buy a great house. Up until the other day, I still got 40 mpg. If I can get this thing up to 400,000, I will be very happy.

I also have a driver's side window off track, and the passenger side door lock broke. Otherwise I am also pretty pleased with this 1993 Geo Metro which just turned over to 79,000 miles. I ride the bus a lot and only drive it 1-2 days a week.

My 94 Geo Metro driver's side door handle also broke. Had it fixed (replaced) by my mechanic ($89.00) and it broke the next day. The newer models have a screw holding the handle in place. My driver's window also came off track. Other than exhaust system replacements this has been a very affordable car. I fill it up every 2 weeks for $22.00 and drive it everyday! I wish the manufacturer would fix the door handle for us, as it is an obvious defect. I would like to know if anyone is aware of any recall regarding the door handle.
I'm buying a Metro, 93 hatchback, and I was just wondering about minor maintence costs, I've heard a lot of good things about the metros, I'm buying one with 150 000 kms on it, so its still got a lot of life in it I think, but what should I be prepared for?
I have a 1992 Geo Metro and the driver's side door handle broke. I can't find anywhere that sells a new replacement. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a new outside driver's side door handle???
Thank you!
I bought a '92 Suzuki Swift (identical to a Geo Metro) in June of 2000; it had 82K miles on it and was very clean. The a/c blows cold and I've only done routine maintenance. Tire rotation, oil changes, etc. I have the 5 speed and 1.3Liter engine. On long trips (>1000 miles over 2 days) it will burn oil with speeds averaging 70-80 mph, so I've found it prudent to check oil with every fill-up. I average 40+ mpg. Once I got 45 mpg driving across Texas. I'm very happy with my hatchback and am considering a Geo 4 door wagon? or the convertible if I run across one with low mileage and in good shape.
I've enjoyed the other comments from loyal owners. I laugh all the way to the bank when my friends? laugh at me for driving this car.
I just bought a 94 Metro and it only had 28,000 miles!! I had everything looked over and tuned up before I bought it. Within 3 days the gas tank was leaking, so that was quite an inconvenience- 2 days after the tank was fixed the muffler fell off- and when I got it home the drivers side interior door handle snapped and broke-
Luckily it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix these items--$65 for the exhaust
-$45 for the handle.
But so far I really enjoy this car-
I have a 1990 5 speed manual Geo metro and it seems that you guys really haven't had any big problems with your vehicles, but me on the other hand ever since I got my car for 1200 dollars I have put enough money into it to buy 3 more of them. Mind you some of my problems were not caused from mechanical failure, but vandalism. But I did end up spending 400 dollars on a new windshield and 600 dollars on the exhaust system because no one carried that type of exaust it had to be fabricated to go into my car. and the bolts that held the exaust in were 45 dollars a piece. I honestly hate my car sometimes, but then I realize I have given it some serious abuse and it just keeps on kicking I don't know if that thing will ever die, but I have probably done everything imaginable to make it die. So all in all they are some touph cars. Still wouldn't mind a camaro :)

I have a 93 geo metro, previously having 160,000 kms on the motor and trans. notice the previously?... well the little car has treated me great, but the motor just burned out and first and fourth gear fell out of the transmission so instead of junking my car I rebuilt the motor and transmission which cost me remarkably only 600 dollars. there are several modifications done to the car as well such as 3 inch exhaust.
I have a 93 metro 2-door hatchback/auto transmission. Its great! I'm having the same problems with my drivers side window and passenger side door handle that my friend broke on accidnet. I want to know with all of you that have a geo with an automatic transmission, do you take it on the interstate? I recently did and the motor revs really high (at least I think so). This is at about 60mph, and I hit final gear at about 35mph. I just wanna know if other people who have a Geo with an automatic travel on the interstate. Just wondering. All in all, it is a rockin' car!
In February 2005, I purchase a 1993 GEO Metro that had two engine seals out, I paid $100.00 for the car, $13.00 for the seals and let my two boys enjoy themselves. It had 210,000 miles on it, it now has 215,000 miles. I averaged 44.9 miles per gallon going 110 miles on a round trip. It uses oil, however, it cost me $1.50 a day now in gas, my truck use to cost me $8.00 a day. My driver side outside door handle busted, now I will fix that, so far I have put $40.00 in repairs on it since I got it. I am really happy, my wife cannot drive it, now if only my son did not know how to use the manual transmission could I be happier.
I have a 1994 Geo Metro 2 door and have had the EXACT same things happen too. I just clicked 168,000 miles and still love this car. My addition to problems is the rubber timing belt has broken on me and the passenger inside door handle is broken. I have done all my own engine work and have helped others with fixes. Just put in a boom box in the back hatch area and now thunder the road with funny looks from the 22 inch spinners... love it.
1993 Geo Metro owner & am loving it! I have owned my car for a little over 3 years now, & bought it at 45000 miles, & now it has 125000 miles. I have spent about $2,000, mainly on wear & tear! I have traveled a lot in it too!
I love how I can get in & out of traffic in it! I am a speed demon, even though it doesn't go that fast, but for me it is fast enough! I don't need any more tickets, ha ha.
I too have had to get my driver side window fixed & both of my locks.
IT IS GREAT IN THE SNOW! NEVER, EVER have I EVER gotten stuck!
But it is almost time to give up & lay it to rest. I wish I could get another just like it, but newer! I'm gonna miss it!
I have a 92 Geo Metro, and until recently it has never given me any real grief. But my drivers window has similar problems to those mentioned, and my passenger side door (interior) handle broke off.
I had one loose valve cover bolt that was a simple $1.00 fix... cost more to ship it then it did to pay for the part!
In the last month though... my exhaust going to the muffler had rusted through, and no it has some sort of short in the electrical system. It doesn't always start, I have to put it in neutral and wiggle the key. Anyone else experience this?
The car has 167,000 kilometers on it.
I own a 1993 Geo Metro and have had the same problems with the driver side window jumping off the track and my inside handle broke as well. I was able to find another handle at a local scrap yard and replaced it. Now I am having what seems to be electrical problems. My flashers aren't working and now I have to pull the emergency switch to shift from Park to drive. I think that the problems are linked. At first the fuse for my flasher would blow if I went from reverse to drive too quickly and I would just have to change the fuse, but now all the fuses are fine and the flashers just won't work. When I pull the emergency switch to go from park to drive and I push the gas, she really doesn't want to go you can feel the strain. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?
Any ideas would be a great help!
Thanks.
