1992 Buick Century Custom from North America - Comments

"Not a car for students!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The alternator has gone several times in the four years that I have had the car.

The seat tore and broke, now the seat is permanently reclined (did not withhold to normal wear and tear)

General comments?

It is a great running car, except it idles poorly.

It is definitely an older persons car, I am young and I can't stand the looks of the car.

If you didn't like the looks of the car then why did you buy a Buick?

If you don't like the way it looks get something less classy like a Yugo.

OK to the person who responded to me above, I was given the car for free and the car sucked. It was by far the worst car ever made. I know people who have them all different years and they hate them too. I have since gotten a new Pontiac Bonneville SSEi that is amazing so maybe you should get yourself a new car.

I know this is an old thread, but... I currently drive a 1992 Century that I have had for a little less than a year. I HATE this car! Its absolutely hideous. I didn't have a choice as to the car I drive considering I am only 17 and my parents bought it for me from my aunt with no input from me whatsoever. I can't wait to get another car, but until then I am stuck with this junk.

If the seat broke, perhaps there was too much weight on it?

I drove my grandmothers very old, but low mileage 1966 Ambassador station wagon all through college and never complained once. It was a gift as was my entire tuition. With my education completed I bought a home and a new Corvette by my late 20's as a direct result of those gifts. Looking back now none of that "sucked "as you put it. I am certain she would have been hurt if she overheard me saying that as well.

Actually I had a 1992 Buick Century also and it was my grandmothers car who weighed about 90 pounds and when I got the car (115 lb. female) the seat had started to tear and eventually leaned back farther and farther. And as for the others who disliked the car, I have to agree it was terrible.

I have a 1992 Buick Century and have had it since 1992. I purchased it with 11,000 and now have close to 150,000. The only thing I have had to replace on it (except the usually battery, tires, mufflers and break shoes) is the water pump and that was this year. I love it. Starts first time in the winter, still hums like a kitten and I couldn't ask for a more dependable car. I have seen several like mine in town and they are all great too. The upholstery and interior is in great condition. Transmission was checked and not 1 shaving in the fluid. It pays to take care of the car with reg. oil changes etc. PS: and I have NEVER needed it tuned up.

I recently acquired a 1992 Buick Century from a reliable dealer and have had no problems with it. As above mentioned, it purrs like a kitten, idols well, has fantastic "pick-up", mint interior (still smells new!). The transmission is in great condition, brakes are fine, everything runs perfectly. I'm highly satisfied. So, suck it up and deal with it. It's better than no car, or a peice of crap Ford or something.

I drive a 92 Century Custom and it's awesome. I love pulling up to ricers and blowing them off the line. Good luck with that in your Bonneville.

If you want to race, find a track, don't endanger others on the street.

I do only race on the track.

I have a 1992 Buick century that idles low - high at times, then when you come to a stop it will just cut off. Last week while coming to a complete stop at a light the car wouldn't move while giving it gas, I put the car in park and again in drive and it just took off after that. I have had it do it one time since then. I took it to an mechanic and was told it was and electrical problem that would cost me $600, I then call a transmission specialist and was told it was a link in the transmission that would cost $248. My question is has anyone else had this problem/could you tell me what it is.

Regarding the post above me, my '92 Century did that once, too. Nothing ever came of it except that it freaked me out a little. It happened to me in the dead of winter... so maybe my situation had to do with the cold... did this happen in a cold climate?

I'm 20 and I love my Buick Century. I've had it since I was 16... it's my first car and I can't imagine life without it. Frankly, I don't ever want to get rid of it. I'm a student, too... so I can see what you're saying about it looking a little clunky... but it really is a fabulous car. Maybe you just got one that wasn't well taken care of?
