I also have had the same problems with the A/C not working on 1 or 2. I found this site looking for a fix to that problem, now I have.
I have another problem to add, hope some of you can help.
The turn signals seem to stop working whenever they choose. The only way I can get them to come back on, is when, and I found this out by trial and error after exhausting all other ways. Is to push in the emergency flasher button really hard, seems it's making a connection, bridging flasher/turn system together and the allowing the turn signals to work.
Have also checked all fuses, etc.
Can anyone help?
Am replacing the brakes soon. Just like everyone else!
Other than those couple of things all seems to be working fine.
I feel like I am one of few, who are enjoying this car.
Hi Steven,
I've got the same problem with turn signal. I fixed it myself (or you can ask your dealer to replace emergency switch with relay, if your car still under warranty)
There is some unreliable contact on this unit, I removed it from dashboard and started to press around it (to find loose contact). I found it very soon and soldered (You cannot see any fault visually, just bad contact) Since repair it works well. It takes not a lot time to find this contact and fix the problem.
Good luck.
I also have problems with my turn signals working intermittently. I did some research and found this to be a common problem in the 00 & 01 Malibu. I filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration their web site is www.nhtsa.dot.gov. If enough people complain they might recall the cars. I also contacted Chevrolet at 1 800 222 1020 they said they would call back Monday with an answer.
I also have the same problem with the a/c not working on 1 or 2. This could be considered a safety problem and maybe
get recalled because it also works the defogger.

I purchased a used Chevy Malibu 2001 8 months ago. I am now having a similar problem with the turn signal. It is intermittent and I cannot find a way to 'make' them work. The A/c also will not work on 2. Just thought I would make you aware that you are not alone in this problem.
I have the same problem with my 2000 chevy malibu, with the turn signals, and the ac not working with 1 and 2...
I have the same problem with the turn signal, it works when it wants to and pushing in the emergency flasher seems to do the trick sometimes.btw my flasher button is now cracked. The question is How do I get to the flasher?? Can I reach it ftom below or can I snap off some of the dash components..
Jeff.
I have the same problem. Signal lights will not work sometimes and the air does not work on 1 & 2.
Peder.
The turn signal switch is a fairly common problem that can be rectified by replacing the turn signal switch on the dash. The trim panel just pops out after undoing the screws above the odometer. You can usually get one for 10.00 at a junker or 50.00 new at a dealer.
If you are experiencing road noise and high vibration at highway speeds recommend you have the wheel bearings and CV joints checked. This car is famous for this failure that I can see.
The ticking noise being referred to in other reviews is an inherent problem with the rear bank of #1 to 3 pistons.
Has any one tried to get GM to do anything?
I also had the same problems with the turn signals. It was a faulty hazard light switch. An electronic machinist replaced the unit for about $70. I have not had any problems with the signals since.
I have had plenty of other problems though:
1. three sets of front rotors and brakes pads (I was told to start using the emergency brake to take some pressure off of the front braking system. The back brakes looked brand new at 40k miles - probably causing the problem with front brakes.
2. loud creaking noise when back left door is opened or closed - WD40
3. loud creaking noise coming from back of car - no solution
4. air conditioner quits working on 1 and 2 and trips out the highest setting - replaced twice, still doesn't work.
Finally, I put it in the shop yesterday because the engine coolant light randomly appears. The mechanic first thought the problem resulted from a leaking intake, but now blames it on a leaking water pump.
My parents also owned a Malibu (98). They had the same problems plus a few others I have been fortunate enough not to experience.
I will never by another Malibu even though it is otherwise enjoyable.
I just got a 2000 Malibu today, when I test drove it I noticed that the 1 and 2 on the a/c did not work too, I though it was just the way the car was. Other than that I like it so far.
The 2000 Malibu has a recall for the turn singals contact any Chevy dealer.
It should be noted that only SOME 2000 Malibu vehicles fall under that particular recall. Check at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ and/or call your local dealer to find out if yours falls under that recall. Mine didn't!
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Campaign ID Number is 03V327000.
Good luck!
I have a 2000 Malibu. Recently, the emergency brake has given me trouble. It pops right back up every time I push it down. Has anyone else experienced this?
I've had same problems with a/c doesn't work on 1,2.Signals work, but will make ticking sound. I had recall part put in. Still get the blinking sound off&on.Coolant light comes on leaking somewhere, just keep adding coolant. Very noisy in front end, brake calibers pins broke, replaced everything. still makes noise. I have 120,000 miles runs good. Any help with A/c controls would be helpful.
Problems with the a/c or heater not blowing on settings 1 and 2 most likely be fixed by replacing blower motor resistor or control unit. I think the part is like 20-30 dollars and can be acquired at most autozone's or auto stores that sell parts. Mine was located under glove box. Had to pull out blower motor. I'm a novice, but not afraid to try new things. I did it, you can too.
I am also having problems with the turn signals and the AC working on 1 and 2. I took the car into Mexico and the technician over there told me that the AC switch had come out bad in those models and it just need to be changed.
