"A mechanical nightmare, will not buy another Jaguar, never again!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Had to replace the gas tank after just 5000 miles.

Engine computer chip failed at 12000 miles.

Moon roof control has never functioned properly.

Excessive brake dust and had them replaced at 20000 miles.

Transmission started leaking at about 18000 miles and had to be replaced.

Clutch began sticking at 31000 miles and the car is now in the shop with a bad clutch and transmission. All gears failed while driving and had only neutral to coast safely to the shoulder of the freeway.

More excessive brake dust and another brake job planned.

General comments?

The handling and performance are top notch. The comfort and style superb. The mechanical problems with the transmission, clutch and brakes have made the car an undesirable experience.

I agree! I also own a Jaguar X-Type and get bent tire rims if I hit a pothole! It costs about 2,000 to replace. I wonder what this vehicle was made for, perhaps to drive on polished glass?

2000 Jaguar XKR - Severe front tire wear, inside tread, resulting in one blow out and five sets of tires in 42,000 miles. Dealer's comment is "the car is out of alignment". Seems to be a lot more that this.

Computer does not remember presets and frequently gives problem warnings and messages which are not correct.

Why am I upset? The car was only $90K new. What would I expect from such a car? Anyone have similar problems?

Very uncharacteristic of late model jags... The 70's-80's another story.

You don't say, but of course this was all fixed under warranty, right?

At least in New York, under our Lemon Laws, you would likely have been able to demand a new car with that level of issues.

In 25,000 miles of driving my 2002 X Jaguar the following have been replaced by the dealer due to problems;

Trunk latch

Drive shaft

Gear shift lever and gate

All instruments in dash

Drive shaft - again!

Auto transmission.

While the car is a nice car to drive (when it is running), reliability is terrible and trade-in value is less than half of what I paid only two years ago.

I bought my 2002 X-type 3.0 in August of 2002 and it has been in the shop over 15 times. Just recently the rim bent and they said it is going to crack, and tonight the transmission blew on the expressway! Thankfully I was able to get it off safely. I can't believe that this car has caused so many problems! I paid $42,000 for it and hoped to have a problem free automobile. I guess Jaguar proved me wrong. It's a shame because Jaguar was truly my dream car. I always wanted one.

I am currently looking at Mercedes-Benz.

I purchased the 2002 Jaguar X Type 3.0L Sport.. and it was the worst thing I have done in my life.. I have had it for 6 months.. I had a transfer case problem which controls the all wheel drive, so the car was not moving at all, I had transmission problems which was replaced. I had radiator problems (leaks), moon roof switch wasn't functioning properly, passenger seat was not functioning properly.. in 3 months I spent close to $20,000 on repairs for this car... can anyone tell me what to do??

People say it's a Ford?? But Ford doesn't even have these problems?? I don't understand who would let this car go on the market!!

Looking for a benz.

I have always wanted a Jaguar, falling in love with the British Racing Green E-Jag of the 60's. Well I purchased my Jag, but it was Platinum. 2002 X-Type 2.5 AWD. Here's what I have had for issues thus far.

1) I had issues with the Continental tires getting flat spots overnight. It was like driving on a bumpy road down the interstate for first 10 miles of your day.

2) Dash board strip near bottom of windshield had to have end fasteners replaced to hold it down.

3) AM radio has NO Reception at all ever.

4) Wipers on clear sunny day will all of a sudden begin to work on their own when in auto mode.

5) Heated seats have tiny hot spots (real hot) across your bottom. Very uneven heat dissipation.

6) Rims finish poor, does not stand up well to weather.

7) Plastic fascias door panels, steering wheel, have poor dye saturation. Some areas have milky faded areas. (Dark Brown interior)

8) TRANSMISSION CRAPPED OUT TODAY:

A) ENGINE SYSTEMS FAILURE

B) TRANSMISSION FAILURE

C) DCS SYSTEMS FAILURE.

It's 40,000 mile check up was to be Monday. Now I am without a car for who knows how long. And Jaguar (closest one is 1 hr drive) has no loaners, and will only cover up to $24.00 day for rental. What the hell can I get to drive for $24.00 a day? a YUGO? This is an expense that should be absorbed by Jaguar, not me!

I'm getting a new VW GTi, or used R36. I've had it.

To the 10 Jan poster who asks, "Can anyone tell me what to do."

I can: Buy a nice, unmarked, well-cared-for 3 or 4 year old Crown Vic, Grand Marquis or Town Car.

For peanuts.

Forget about impressing folks with Jag, BMW, Mercedes etc and just enjoy driving a simple, unpretentious car.

If you must go for a "Premium" brand sedan, go for a Lexus LS430.

Proof, yet again, that Jaguar is only existing on its previous reputation. No wonder their sales have been so awful. About the only good one is the new XJ, but I still wouldn't trust its reliability.

As for the X-Type, I was shocked when I test drove it. It felt like an uncomfortable, cheaply built Ford, which it really was. I could see maybe paying $20K for it, but not the $38K they wanted.

First of all, I thought I was the only one had a nightmare about this car.

Jaguar was one of my dream cars. I had Toyotas and Chevys in the past. Last year, I was able to get a "Jag" -- X-Type 3.0.

I had and accident 5 months ago. Since the body was fixed more problems come out. I have been in and out of the shops since then; and I lost a lot of money including hours of work.

Before writing this comment, I had a chance to read all the comments posted here and none was so good. It seems that "the reliability of this car is the issue."

Now, my experience is worst. Today, I still have to go back to the shop for the transfer case leak. I had the broken transfer case replaced with used one and still has problems.

From my experience. This car is not reliable and "cross your fingers you would not get involved in a head on collision" because even for small impact from the accident can cause serious damage its parts -- at least one Jaguar service manager had said that to me.

The impact of my accident was strong enough to bend the radiator, breaks the transfer case, cracks the oil pan and God knows what other invisible internal damages that are not directly seen. With the good quality of automotive oil we are using, a very, very, very tiny crack cannot be found right away -- it takes hours before you notice that there's a leak on the parts, like what I have experienced. With oil leaking, when you put the fan on taking air directly from the outside, you smell the burned oil and can cause headache.

The reason I keep the car is: (1) the driving is good and (2) if I had to trade it in, the value is low and I get a high downside value.

I hope Jaguar corporations sees this problem. I still believe the can make good cars by using reliable parts.

Here's the big problem when you have an accident: When you take the car to the dealership for repair, you might get this common comment on some of the obvious accident related damages -- "it is common for this car at his mileage." How convenient. Then the insurance adjustors will rely on the dealership's comments. Then this is where your nightmare begins.

Another thing that I can share with you is that, be careful in driving on the roads that have pathholes or rough, this could gradually damage or crack the transfer case -- at least, this is what am doing right now -- avoiding poholes or apply brakes cautiously.

Disappointed………..I to have always wanted to own a Jaguar, but thought I would never be able to afford one. I currently own a Jaguar 2002 3.0 X-Type with 50,000 miles and I have just learned the entire transmission is going to have to be replaced!! It appears from all the other comments, Jaguar should, at a minimum, consider issuing a recall on transmissions and rims.

After reading the above comments and the situation I am currently experiencing I am sorry to say I would discourage anyone from purchasing a Jaguar.

PS I have experienced a broken windshield fluid noozle, a head lamp replacement, CD Player replaced.

I find the Jaguar X to be a very sophisticated car. If you take care of your car like your supposed to then you can get the 30k or 40k that you paid for the vehicle. The transmission is supposed to be changed about every 4-5 years. Your car will only be reliable when you do what is necessary to ensure that it is driven properly. Such as obeying the speed limit and being aware of the things that are in front of you while you are driving. If you want a vehicle whose tires won't go bad ; don't get a Jag or luxury sedan get a Range Rover or a Lexus Lx470 they are made to conquer the road. In conclusion I think the Jaguar x is one of the best luxury sedans ever made when the proper care is taken.

The transmission should be changed every 4-5 years!? Does Jaguar put that in their maintenance schedule? For the money they ask for these cars that seems nuts.

I come here to get information about automobiles from people who actually own them and depend on them, not automotive press people who spend maybe a couple hours with a car, and from the litany of horror stories I've read, the X Type may be "sophisticated", but I need a vehicle that gets me where I need to go, not an expensive paper weight.

I feel bad for all these folks who thought they were getting a luxury vehicle that would run. My '98 Audi A6 Quattro has been a dream compared to what I've read here.

Oh, and I've not had to replace the transmission, not even once.

It's really sad to see all the comments about the Automatic Transmission on the 2002 X-type, My transmission went out 2months and 900 miles (50900) after the factory warranty expired, I have called Jaguar Customer Care and have not received any assistance in this matter. Basically told too bad. It seems very irresponsible of them not to take care of their customers, with so many cars having the same problem, I have not given up though, I am still trying to reach the Regional Service Rep for help. I'm not giving up on this one!!!

To the guy that mentioned going to buy a VW Golf Gti R32 - maybe a look at this website regarding their levels of quality and dealership support issues. As with most things - there is good and bad. Although it has to be said - people talking about German reliability is merely a myth - maybe 10 years ago - but all manufacturers have consistently nailed suppliers to the wall in terms of cost down activities - so it's no great surprise to find there are some lemons out there. Having owned Jaguars before - as well as BMWs and Saabs - I'd have to say that - apart from the huge cost of repairing a BMW - the only real difference is the dealership service support - Jaguar being only too willing to help - along with Saab - and BMW denying any existence of any problems and charging you humongous amounts of cash for fixing - so-called non issues!
