You name it, it broke... Electrical, rear end steering..
Nightmare from the start, worst service I've ever had from any dealership, I mean I thought Ford was bad but these people had Ford beat, now that's BAD! This Jeep had so many problems I was considering contacting the Chrysler corp. and having this thing declared a lemon. Luckily I traded it off for a Sportage, considering I've heard so many bad things about Kia.. Ive not had a problem yet with mine. The first year into my Cherokee I was already 1500 dollars in it!
I have a 1994 Cherokee Sport and I haven't had any problems with it. Also, whenever I had to do something with the dealership they were nice and prompt in dealing with the problem. I love my Cherokee and I strongly suggest that you reconsider your feelings twoards Jeep and their cars.
Severe problems, too stressed to explain all. Obtained a used 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee only 4 months ago. At the dealership every two weeks with another problem.
SEVERE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS.
- Power locks do not work.
- Entire console, disc player, clock etc. stopped working.
- Tail light not working warning, although it was functioning.
- Air conditioning stopped working.
- Interior lights would not turn off one night, had to disconnect the battery.
- Brakes froze up on me one time only, but what happened was, it was as if cruise was locked. The vehicle accelerating up to 100 km/h without my foot on the gas, had to drive with my foot jammed on the brake, and it would remain at 80. Could not press the brake further. Luckily no cars around. Kept jamming the cruise buttons. After about 5 minutes of my foot on the brake I was able to pull over and stop.
- WORST PROBLEM OF ALL.
My daughter was driving two nights ago. Noticed a huge amount of smoke from the back of the vehicle. Pulled over. Sparks and small flames from underneath. She distanced herself from the vehicle and called 911.
Within the next few minutes, it went up in flames. Not the entire vehicle. Only the back end. Flames were engulfing the back sides of jeep. Fire crew arrived quickly and put out. Once white, the sides were just black.
They guessed it was the fuel line.
Waiting 2 more days to find the final outcome and cause of the problem.
I have a '94 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4X4 with the 4-liter engine and automatic transmission. I've driven it 72,000 miles (from 69,000 to 141,000) and I've noticed a big difference between the mechanical quality and the body, or coachwork, quality. Mechanically, it is an above-average workhorse. However, the body quality is very poor and sub-par. For example, the door hinges fall off the body. They weren't bolted on. This is a weak design inconsistent with a vehicle that is supposedly rugged. I expect the drivetrain to outlive the body.
I have had my Jeep Cherokee with me for a long time and I haven't had any problems whatsoever, aside from the normal stuff like oil changes and a oxygen sensor. I trust the Cherokee brand because no matter where I take it, off or on road, it performs superb, it has great 4x4 capabilites, and I was hoping to buy a new one for my girlfriend, but they're taking it out of production so I'll have to get her a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V8.
If the Jeep Cherokee wasn't a great sport utility, it wouldn't have lasted 15 years in production so I recommend it to anyone, especially the 4 door with the 4.0 litre high output engine.
I purchased a '94 Cherokee Sport 4x4, 4 door back in January from a used car dealer close to me. My first problems consisted of blowing fuses and hoses (dry rot, apparently). The A/C doesn't work either, but I'll deal with that. However, I've had to replace the radiator, the sway bar bushings, front axle ujoints for the 4 wheel drive (not to be confused with the drive shaft u-joints), and most recently one of two warped rotors.
I'm confused on the warped rotor issue. A: I don't know how rotors can get warped, but I'll deal with it. I have to replace the second rotor next week and I'm hoping beyond all hope that will get rid of this incessant "lop-lop" sound I continue to hear. After all the work I've had done on the front end, including rotating the tires, I still can't get rid of this noise and am at a loss as to what it is. This is my ONLY problem with my Jeep. Other than that, I absolutely love my truck.
I've had my Jeep Cherokee (94 4liter) from 72,000 to 104,000. No real problems as of yet. I did have to replace the AC condenser. It has been very dependable for us. The manual transmission is starting to creek in the colder mornings.
I'm about to trade my 94 cherokee ltd. I've replaced the front bearing assembly, air conditioning unit, crank engine sensor, catalytic converter, nuetral safety switch, engine mount, welsh plugs, radiator, rear diff, shock absorbers, and my transmission is now packing it in. I think the jeep is a constant source of financial pain. It is a great 4x4 and when its running it goes well on and off road, but it is by far the most un reliable vehicle I have ever owned.
My wife and I have driven jeep cherokees for 10 years. Some have had problems, always small if you know how to work on vehicles. The newer (93-96) cherokee classics, seemed to have rust problems if you live where they salt the roads in the winter, and you don't wash your car weekly. the grand cherokees have more electrical problems. But every jeep we have owned, we bought with 125,000 miles or more. And with
3000 mile oil changes with a good brand name oil and filter,
the 4.0 liter motor and the automatic will run well over 200,000 miles. Our first 1987 limited is still running with
over 300,000 on the original motor, tranny, and transfer case. Look on Ebay and see how many cherokees have tons of miles and are still running. Some people can kill any car and should just buy new!
I've owned 7 Jeeps, including 2 Cherokees. I've had no more problems with the Cherokees than the Dodge Ramchargers I've owned as well. I think Jeeps have a far better than average reliability rating. They aren't as stylish as other 4-WD vehicles, but they go places other 4 wheelers fear to go. I'm an avid fly fisherman, and I take my vehicles off road frequently - and I don't mean down gravel roads. Both of my Cherokees have gone far beyond 100,000 miles. My maintenance costs have been no higher than any other vehicle. My take is if you want a highway vehicle and little maintenance then buy a cheesy import 4-WD. If you really need 4-WD then get a real 4-WD, Get a Jeep.
I have a 94 jeep. I had to replace the transmission bushing and seal a few times in just a year. I found out the driveshaft was to short. The yoke was sticking out to much
And it was wearing the bushing. I had a longer driveshaft insalled and its fine. Anthony.
I am on the verge of buying a used 1994 jeep cherokee sport with 150,000 miles, am I buying a headache, or a nice ride?
Roblo.
My 4.0 is at 170,000 and still going well, needs a service and a little tlc, but starts 1st time every day. Hasn't cost a fortune to keep it going & i'd buy another. Do remember it's really just a very big sports car (if youv'e ever been forced to sit in the back!!)
I purchased a 1994 Cherokee Sport, 4dr, about 3 years ago with 47,000 miles on the clock. The first 2 years of the vehicle were a dream. Unfortunately, after I passed 100,000 miles the vehicle became a maintenance nightmare. I drive 100 miles a day and have been suffering through the less than stellar gas mileage. The fuel economy compounded with the sudden outbreak of rust and mechanical failure has me slightly perplexed. Mechanically I have replaced both rear u-joints, transfer case tail shaft bushing and seal, water pump, and complete front brakes because the left front caliper froze and the right front brake line started leaking around the banjo bolt. The transmission has developed a wicked vibration in overdrive as well. I thought this may be wheel balance or bent axles causing problems, but both checked out fine. Electrically, I had to replace a variety of under hood sensors (coolant temp, idle control motor, tp sensor, etc..) and am still stuck with a stalling problem. I do not want to take it to the local Jeep dealership because the cost of labor is crazy, and I've had bad experiences with them. The body is suffering from heavy rust around the windshield frame, on the doors, and the entire undercarriage. I have had the body repaired once already. Since Jeep flooded the market with the Cherokee prior to introducing the Liberty, the value of the vehicle has hit rock bottom. This will be the last Jeep Cherokee I own.
I just bought a 94 Jeep Cherokee Sport, after having totaled my 98 Chevy Cavalier. It currently has 149,000 miles on it, and was owned by an auto body repair shop employee... is there anything in particular I should look out for? Getting ready to do a full tune up on it next week (the whole shebang, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil change), along with getting new tires.
Any comments would be helpful, would appreciate it :)
Hello I just bought a 94 Cherokee sport I love it, there are some problems though. The elect. windows on the passenger side as well as the two back doors does not work and I am trying to get used to the loose steering. The cars I am used to were little and had tight steering, my husband just laughs at me and says it is because the car is built for off road. I really don't know. Other than that I would not trade it for anything! If anyone knows how to tighten the steering a little please let me know. Thank you.
