1996 Vauxhall Calibra 16v from UK and Ireland - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Clutch went at 85,000.

Head gasket went at 87,000.

Tires are scrubbing out at three or four month intervals!

General comments?

The car looks great and has a great balance of speed and style for the money it owes me, if anyone has any ideas on how I can stop my tires scrubbing out then please speak up, the car is lowered, but surely these companies wouldn't sell lowering springs if they're going to wreck your tires?

The problem you have with your tires wearing out is due to camber problems. When you lower your car your camber angle changes. there is a camber adjustment kit for sale from regal that should sort this problem out for you. It costs £180 which may sound like a lot of money, but when you think of how many sets of tires it will save you it's worth every penny.

If your car keeps cutting out at idle or on start up, then try cleaning your carb out, fuel regulator and air intake system which will cost you (DIY) £10 for chemicals, marks out out 10 for doing the job 10 being the hardest I would say 4 and that should sort your problem.

I have had my calibra lowered 40mm and never had a problem with scrubbing tyres! It may be that if the wheels are a different offset? Also, I assume you have got the tracking checked out? And in response to the stalling problem, its more than likely the airflow mass meter, if an ECU light has lit up, take to Vauxhall to sort. That's one of the few sensors that will cause that.

Problems with cutting out is normally the the control valve or air mass meter go ahead an clean it as it will make the car tick over better, but as for taking it the vauxhall it is very pricey for them doing nothing!! I suggest disconnecting the battery over night this will reset the air mass meter and normally solves the problem!! as for the tyres wearing you normally get camber problems when lowered more than 40mm, but the kits are very good and well worth the money!! but it still could be the wrong off set or tyres rubbing on car when you steer or go over bumps??

I have a 16valve red top I changed the alternator started the car and its revving at 4000 rpm I don't know if it goes higher because I turn it off to avoid damage could it be the idle speed adjuster that may need cleaning or replacing any advice welcome.

I have a calibra 2.0 16v eco with the same problem.

It seems to be a heep of problems now

It won't rev above 4000rpm and cuts out randomly at traffic lights etc and sometimes won't start again like the petrol is not getting to the engine but it still turns over

Also it looses oil pressure when idle and as you give her revs the oil pressure goes up.

Also the airbox is not connected but when I connect it up it makes the car run worse with nearly no power at all.

Could all these be the same problem, In my experience if you take it to a garage they say its something e. g plugs and leads and when you leave the problem is still there.

Any Ideas???
