Had to replace coolant cap, ten minutes later the car overheated and found out it was a blown head gasket. Basically meaning a crack in the engine. This was at 79,000 miles. This never should happen to a car this early.
Everything inside is falling apart.
Exterior paint is already chipping.
The gas gauge does not work correctly. I have to time my miles so I don't run out of gas. The less gas I have, the closer the gas gauge moves to FULL. Duh!!
It rides awful because of the head gasket. It ruined my transmission. The dealer said the transmission was fine, however when a car can't catch its gear, something is wrong.
I have had the air conditioning worked on.
This is the worst car ever made. I will tell anyone that. Don't ever buy a Neon... none the less a Dodge.
If you like beautiful Japanese cars, that is your business. I'm not a macho, but drive a Civic Si and try a Neon Sport after that, you will change your mind.
OK, you will be in the garage before a Camry owner, but the parts will be cheaper. People want to buy a car and not visit the garage, but if you want that sort of car, go get a Nova SS.
Me, I've got a 1997 Neon Sport Coupe. I meet a lot of daddy's boy with Civics, Celicas or CRXs. They think they drive THE urban racing car, I just push the gas and I see them in my rearview mirror. Their girlfriend probably tells them that they should calm down and not try to prove something. I have the same car as you do and it is just GARBAGE, GARBAGE, GARBAGE. This car is a disgrace to automobiles. Dodge should be ashamed of themselves by allowing a lemon of that magnitude to be built. In my opinion the only reasonable function that this clunker has is to be used as a ships anchor (or target practice by the military). I will never ever ever buy a Dodge product as long as I live. All they build is JUNK!
I don't see where everybody's getting their problems from. I've owned a Neon for about 3 years now and the only thing I've replaced is a crackling speaker. I think the Neon is one of the best cars Dodge has ever made.
My '95 Neon Sport Coupe will outrun and out handle any of those 'urban racers'. Unfortunately, it will also outrun them to the repair shop. I have $4000 of repair bills from the head gasket, cam seal, and 2 clutches in the past year. Neons are not built well, and Chrysler's record of standing behind them is inconsistent. I cannot recommend anyone buy one of these cars.
I own a 1997 Dodge Neon Sport Sedan. I feel that you cannot find a cheaper, more fun-to-drive car with more power, even if you do have to make a few repairs. I do admit that the 1995 model year has a lot of problems, but if you go for a newer model year Neon, you will have a better car. Again, the standard Neon comes with more horsepower than any base model compact car. The optional DOHC engine, when paired to the 5-speed, is a very quick combination.
I own a 1997 Neon. I have had nothing but problems out of mine. I have estimated the car to need over $5000 dollars worth of work to get it back in decent shape from the Head Gasket giving out to other problems to the car - paint peeling, and electrical problems.
The sad part is that even if I put the $5000 into it, the car's Blue Book value in mint condition is about $3000. I would not recommend a Neon or a Dodge to anyone. I warn people not to buy them. Chrysler does not support their products and admits mistakes with them, but refuses to fix them. So buying one would leave you with the same thing I own - a Tin Can with an engine that breaks constantly.

The Dodge Neon shakes like crazy when I get on the freeway, there is a ticking under the hood, the idle is rough.
When I bought the car @ ugly duckling it fell apart 1 week after purchase and they would not take the car back.
Don't buy a Neon.
I also have had a 1995 Dodge Neon, was told that the head gasket usually went out between 60,000 and 70,000 miles and was very expensive to replace.
Well guess what it happened, and the cheapest quote for repair was a little over 3,000 dollars. My question is if this is a major malfunction in the Neon, how can we get the Chrysler Corporation to pay for the repairs? You can't tell me they don't know about it and continue to make the product? Isn't this a consumer scam? When you buy a car you expect it to last with proper maintenance, but this one will not last because it has a major malfunction, that will end up costing the consumer thousands of dollars to fix. More money for Chrysler, a lemon for the consumer.

I have a 95 neon sport coupe, and cosmetically it is hooked up like you wouldn't believe. I get pulled over every day I drive it, just because of the way it looks.
It kind of seems like the car is a trouble magnet. I've gotten into 4 accidents within the 3 months I've had it. None of them were my fault...It's all the neons fault..
How can a car have a mind of its own. She stalls out whenever she feels like it. I thought that when the r/t motor was dropped in, that the car would be dependable.
It has now been sitting in the front of my crib for the past month and some change.. I guess what I'm trying to say is It really doesn't matter what kind of exhaust, paint, rims, or body kit you have on your neon, IT IS STILL A NEON!!! It will give you problems regardless of what motor you put in it or what you do to it. Modifications mean nothing, stock quality means everything.
I have had all sorts of problems with my 2000 dodge neon. In one year I have had to take it to the dealership so they can fix a poor acceleration problem and a shifting problem four times. Each time they replace something new. First, they replaced the transaxle, the serpentine belt, and the motor mounts. Then they replaced the timing belt. And next the throttle. It is currently at the dealership because it refuses to accelerate quickly. You can press the accelerator all the way to the floor and 3-4 seconds later it decides to kick into gear. Is this just my car?
I owned a 1995 Dodge Neon.
My CO2 filter continuously went bad for months under warranty. Dodge replaced it three times.
Trunk won't stay locked. Opens while driving down the highway. I returned it (while under warranty), they informed me it wasn't broken. I demonstrated it. The latch doesn't work from inside.
Trunk leaks in rain.
My AC died just at 30,015 miles, 15 miles beyond warranty. I argued with Dodge. They replaced it. One week later, it broke. I returned it. They informed me it was no longer under warranty. I ranted and they replaced it again.
My radio died.
My rear rotor's died. Sears replaced them.
At 100,000 miles my head gasket blew. Repaired.
One of my spark plugs burned up.
Speedometer hesitates to work, have to pound on dash to get it to work.
Main rear seal leaks oil (after getting head gasket replaced).
AC died, again.
It is up to 150,000 miles. I prayer everyday that I will keep going. I change the oil every 3000 miles. Baby it like crazy. I trust Midas with everything, not Dodge.
I will never buy another Dodge product. And I tell everyone of my problems with the Neon. Dodge does not stand behind their products and claims that there is nothing wrong with the Neon. Very poor!
My daughter got "stuffed" into a '95 Neon SOHC... and I really hope I can keep it running until she pays it off!
Multitude of "unusual" (I'm a 30+ year auto parts, speed equipment Truck parts professional)...problems no Honda, Toyota, or Mazda has ever had. A late 70's domestic junker would be better. As I once read..." A letter of apology should come with the car ".

I have a 95 neon and it has been great for me I am putting a 98 r/t stroker motor within the next month. The problem with the head gaskets are not the gasket it self, but it is the bolt hole it was not machined deep enough so all you need to do is have the bolts machined down 2 threads and it will last longer than 60,000 miles my 96 has 111,000 original head gasket my bolts are machined thought.
I bought my '95 Dodge Neon with bout 54,000 miles on it. I now have 150,000 miles on it. The only problems I have run across is spark plug wires and needing to change the timing belt, which comes with age on all cars. It has been very reliable and plan to drive it another 2 years.
I bought a 95 neon not even a year ago. What a piece of you know what. This car is terrible. Transmission is slipping, car overheats all the time and I've already replaced timing belt and water pump. Handling is terrible. The car is very slow. Matter of fact, the only thing I like about this car is it's comfortable. I'm getting rid of it. Getting a civic.
