The transmission required an overhaul (not rebuild!) at 91,000 miles. This included: speed sensor, governor, overdrive solenoid, front pump bearings and input shaft & seals; I also put in a mild performance torque converter and shift kit.
Replaced speed sensor in left rear wheel hub at 90,000 miles.
Easily the best truck (and probably best auto, period) I've ever owned!
With mild performance modifications it accelerates fast and has a top end around 150 mph.
Stock suspension, wheels and tires are beyond adequate and handling is more like a sports car that a 1/2 ton truck.
The interior is very comfortable and the stock Infinity Premium sound system approaches audiophile quality.
Steven - Liked your comment on the Ram SS/T - I also have one a '98 white w/blue stripes. It has 65,000 on it now - bought it with 11,000 and have had no problems except battery replacement and new Goodyear II's at 60,000. I agree it is a fun and good looking truck for the money and the stereo is excellent. I get lots of comments on it and my girlfriend liked it so much she sold her 2001 Toyota RAV 4 and now drives the truck most of the time. She loves the sound and power. My best mileage so far has been about 20 per gallon - which isn't bad for a full sized truck with some power!
Take care. Jesse.
I own a 1998 SS/T with just under 40,000 miles. It is white with the blue stripes. It has been a dream vehicle to own. I have won a number of trophies and plaques with it in car/truck shows. Gas mileage is poor, but I didn't buy it for that reason. It still turns heads after almost 7 years on the road and all the folks at the dealership where I have it serviced want the truck! At the present time, it's not for sale! Great sounding exhaust (still stock) and awesome looks, plus you can still use it like a truck, what a deal!
I also have a '98 ss't and love it I bought it a month ago with 47,000 miles on it. impressive power but with slight mods it could incredible. I hear good feedback from everyone that sees or rides in this truck.
Yeah it is a nice truck, but I just raced one tonight its got no torqe, but lots of high end hp overall nice truck I gotz a 96 ram slt with intake chip and exhuast QUICK OFF THE LINE!!!
Great comment on the SS/T. I just bought a Black 98 with white racing stripes and it has been nothing short of a dream. Very fast off the line, I have yet to be beaten (even a Ford Lightning couldn't hold its own!) My stock Exhaust turns all my co-workers heads every time I pull into the lot. I will NEVER sell this truck!
-Mark.
I have a 98 SS/T, black with silver strips. It has a K&N air filter & a 52mm throttle body, with dual exhaust. I get terrible gas mileage, but I would not trade it for the world. Throttle response is not that great, but around 3rd gear it takes off.
I love these trucks! I have a 1998 SS/T, black with silver strips, and a 1996 Indiapolis Pace Truck. They've both been great with no problems so far, and lots of power to spare. The SS/T ran 16.2 stock and with a few mods, it runs 14.7 now. Great looking truck, and it feels good to own a limited production vehicle.
I own a '97 Ram SS/T, bought it off the lot brand new. It used to be Red with Silver racing stripes, now it is only Red. I am working with a local graphics shop to make some new stripes for the truck. They cost too much to get them from the Dodge place.
This truck drives better than any I have ever driven. The night I drove it home from the dealership, I thought it rode like a horse carriage. But after a week of use it smoothed right out. The handling is phenomenal for a truck. The Goodyear Eagle GTIIs that come with the truck are no good and I used to swear by them until I replaced them with Bridgestone Dueler HPs. These tires are very sticky, but they do cost more.
My headliner started coming down the first couple of weeks I had the truck and I had the dealer replace it. No more trouble from it. I had the fuel pump quit at 36K miles and the dealer replaced it. I have had to replace the battery twice. Several fog lights and headlight have been replaced. I have one of the adjusters on my driver's side headlamp is broke so I spotlight into the tops of trees. I have a slight overheating problem that is creeping up and this is beginning to worry me. The stock audio system sounds very good, but still not quite loud enough. That is why I made an on-line purchase yesterday for some new speakers and amp. Phoenix Gold Octane ZR-6.5 Components, Octane-R 8.0:4 amp, and an Octane-R 12" Sub. Hopefully this thing will rock. The CD receiver will be replaced later since it has trouble playing some CDs.
Overall, this has been an excellent vehicle. I would like a bit more power and to extend the top speed. Maybe one day I can drop a Viper motor in it.
I have a 1998 ss/t, black with silver stripes. It has 24" rims, it pushes almost 400 hp. I am the king, I am the first, I am the fastest from my neighborhood. If you want to see my ss/t I live in Sun Valley Ca.
I have a '98 Ram SS/T. I bought it used and must say, I will never part with it. My Ram has the 5.9 magnum with a Factory 3 inch single exhaust, Mopar performance computer and a K&N filter kit. She's got 295 horses and runs the quarter 14.49 at 102 Mph. It's black with the silver stripes, full leather interior with the ram emblems in the seats. I get about 20-23 Mpg on the highway and about 17 in town. When I put my foot down however, mileage suffers. I threw the goodyears away, and slapped on a set of Firestone FireHawk GTA's,, 275-60-HR-17. even with the 3:55 rear end, it will hardly spin out. These tires just hook up and I'm gone. My next truck will also be a dodge, maybe a Hemi GTX.
I bought my Ram SS/T with about 184,000 miles on it, the previous owner had a computer chip installed *40hp supposidly* new transmition around 90,000. He also cut out the Catalytic converter, its sounds nice, somewhat loud, I like loud. It is fast for a truck, how ever I don't think it has that much top end its got lots of torque, and I liek how I can barely bark them when I romp on it good traction, tire selections is very slim. Its red with silver stripes, I hit a pt crusier so the front is messed up and I'm having water pump, timing chain, intake gasket, belts, hoses, tubes, and throttle sensor replaced... I estimate around 300 hp, and 400 tq. how are people geting 150, my truck like is slow once past about 80.
Hey guys, I'm looking at a 98 ss't with about 80k miles (black with sliver strips). Just curious what's the selling price range, decent condition etc?
I have had my 98 SS/T since 2004. It is black with silver stripes. I bought it with 68,774 miles, and now with only 71,428 miles it sits in my garage just gaining value. The only modification made was a K&N cold air intake. These trucks are awesome and look like they are going 100mph standing still!
Just bought a 98 sst, red with silver strips.
Nice truck with 90,000 miles.
Can't really drive it hard unless it want to put lot of gas in the tank. 17 mpg on the interstate if I drive it right 11 mpg if I don't. Flowmaster exaust, all msd ignition and chiped.
Have 5500.00 invested in purches of truck..
Don't think I will ever sell it. if anyone has tips on getting better performance let me know.
I have a supercharged 98 SS/T white with painted blue strips.
Id like to see that 400hp SS/T from sun valley, I'm a couple hours away, but maybe I can drive thru when I'm in that area. What do you have done to it?
I don't think the SS/T hold much value, like some guy said the SS/T package cost about the same as the A/C option from the dealership. It's the stripes that draws the attention.
