When I first bought the car at 83,000 miles, the engine blew. It had to be replaced.
The tie rods had to be replaced at 86,000 miles.
The transmission doesn't change gears when the car is cold in the morning. It has to warm up for at least 15 minutes before I can put it into reverse or drive.
The car rumbles when accelerating slowly between 25-40 MPH. It seems like the transmission is slipping.
The gages stopped working at 100,000 miles. The gas gage needle runs up and down by itself, even if the tank is filled.
The rear sway bar is not working properly as the rear of the car sways from side to side when hitting a bump on a turn.
The driver power seat is not working properly. It doesn't lean back all the way.
The water pump is leaking, and causes the car to overheat. it was replaced at 102,000 miles.
Continuous problems with the A/C. The compressor was replaced and there is a freon leak.
The car is fast. That is about it. Every other comment I have would be negative.
I agree the intrepid is indeed garbage. I look forward to pushing mine off a cliff or setting it on fire. Mine currently gets 8mpg and is ruining my life. The transmission went at 94,000, the exhaust system at at 100,000. The car randomly over heats and no one can figure out why. on top of everything the oil stick broke and I can't check my oil. I'm buying a new civic today. no amount of stress is worth spent on garbage. However at 134,000 it has no rust.
It always surprises me when someone buys a used car, then whines about the wear on it. On almost every engine with a cam timing belt, the belt should be replaced sometime around 60 to 80 thousand miles. When you buy a car in this range, assume that the previous owner has not gifted you with a six hundred dollar repair, just before trading the car off. A little common sense and any American car should run 150,000 miles, if you just follow the maintenance.
Oh, the mileage. My 93 E/S with a 3.5 engine gets 18/19 in town, and 29 @ 70 MPH, and 31 @ 60 MPH.
I have a 1996 dodge intrepid 3.3l that I got new and have 207,195 miles and have never had any engine or transmission promlems with it. you guys probably bought one that was abused.
I have a 94 with a 3.3 and it has 250,000 miles on it. The only problem I have is the trans will not go into first or rev sometimes, mostly when it's cold, other times it really has to be at full operating temperature to do so. Other than that it's just normal maintenance items, struts, brakes, tie rods. Another tip if you have warped rotors or a brake pulsation and keep driving it then figure on replacing tie rod ends along with the brakes.
