"A reliable and roomy family sedan"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I had this car for 7 seven years now and it's been very reliable.

Recently though, the transmission was not working properly. The car cannot accelerate when the gear is in drive. Ironically, I had to shift to the 2nd gear in order for the the car to move, after that I set the gear back to drive at cruising speed. To my surprise, the repair cost was minimal, just US$350. It turned out that there was a switch in the transmission that needed to be replaced.

Other than that, the car is flawless and still runs like new. Best car I've ever spent my money on.

General comments?

Spacious interior. Lots of shoulder and leg room, even in the rear seat.

The bad news is that mine (93 Nissan Maxima GXE) has started the same, very exact problem today, but the good news is that I know what is the exact fix due to this site. I will definitely inform my friends about this site, it's great!!!

I also have exactly the same problem with my Maxima 1993.

The transmission have been re-builded 2 times, but the problem still the same. Where did you get that service with

$350 cost?

I just bought a 1993 Maxima for $1,500, and after finding out about the transmission problem, I thought I got ripped off, but now I guess I didn't. I'll just go and get it fixed. Hence, a 1993 Maxima with 152K Miles with a DOHC V6 costing me under 2K is just GREAT.

I own 1993 Nissan Maxima. It just started to sit (as if in neutral) when I shift into Drive. Waiting a few seconds, it then goes into gear. What exactly is the switch that you had replaced? Maybe same cause for mine. thanks.

I just bought a Maxima with the same problem when I shift into Drive. I don't even have my license yet and the car has problems, I've driven the car like 3 miles that's it. Does anyone think it would be safe to drive it like that for a while till I have more money to get it fixed? Any one knows the name of the switch that has to be replaced? I guess we all have the same problem :- ( HELP.

I have a very similar problem. when I shift into drive, it seems to do the neutral thing - but if I just wiggle it a little downward - it's like it finally shifts into drive and is fine. but this scares me! my brother in law is a mechanic - I just got off the phone with him and he said there could be something loose. I have to get a buddy to help me though - he said to have the car running, shift into drive - while someone is watching the transmission to maybe see something that needs tightening... any other info on this problem would be helpful.

Hi Everyone

I have a Nissan Maxima 1993. I have the car for last 1 1/2 years. So far no major problem. Did the regular tuneup.

But recently, the transmission started to scare me. As others said. My car also feels like its in neutral, when its in drive. It takes less than 2 sec to reset to drive and after then its OK. Also the throttle response is sluggish.

I think a lot of us had this problem. Some professional advice will be greatly appriciated

Thanks

sami.

I have a 93 maxima. The transmission started slipping about two weeks ago and this week it wouldn't go into gear at all.. so if it starts doing it all I would suggest getting it looked at as soon as possible. The shop told me it needed a rebuilt transmission.$350 sounds a lot better than $1700.

I'm so happy I found these comments; I was thinking my car was on it's way to an expensive transmission job!

I have another question... for anyone who knows...

I have a 93 GXE with an auto climate control system. This past year, the auto button does not work, and I barely get any heat... and when I do, the heat "runs out" quickly and it's cold again (the car temperature gage actually goes down). Is this a problem with the climate control unit or is it related to the radiator??? Please let me know if you've had the same problem or if you know of a good source of info on this problem. - Emily.

Hi Emily,

I have a 1993 Nissan Maxima GXE, and have run into a similar problem with the heater. While my car temp gage doesn't drop, the heat that comes out of the panel is just barely warm, even when I have the temp. set to 77 degrees (25 Celsius). Moreover, heat only seems to come out of the driver-side panel -- the passenger side ones expel cool air.

A radiator flush might help. I had one done recently, but haven't needed to use my heater, so I can't really tell if it's helped. Also, check your anti-freeze levels. If they are too low, the heater won't be as efficient. Pinched heater hoses or a blockage in a heater hose could also be the problem.

Below are some websites that discuss this problem:

http://www.advanceautoparts.com/english/youcan/html/ccr/ccr20031201hc.html

http://www.inct.net/~autotips/htr_tip.htm.

If anyone else is having similar difficulties and has found a solution that I didn't mention, please do post here & let me know. I haven't noticed any drastic improvement after my radiator flush, so any other tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-CAT

Hi.

My name is Marcus, and I have a 1993 Maxima SE. I love the power and stylishness of the car, but I'm worried about the engine. it seems to have an oil leak (I can smell oil burning when engine is hot) but I can't find it. I was thinking of having the engine rebuilt.. Any recommendations?

Thanx in advance!
