From day one the car had a buzz in idle while stopped in gear. It also had a vibration/moan at highway speed. Ford installed new engine mounts, changed tires and added an exhaust vibration damper. None of this has worked. Now they say "well it is a truck and we have done all we can to solve the problem". Ford admits the problem is still there, but says there is nothing else they can try. I will continue until it is right, or replaced with another Expedition. This same problem has existed in a number of earlier Expeditions, but I quess they have not wanted to spend the money to fix the problem. Some people have had the Expeditions replaced and some the purchase price refunded. I feel the more people are aware of this problem, the better chance everyone will have getting a problem Expedition repaired.
Ford admitted to me they know about this problem. There is internal information regarding it, however they will not share this information with me or the public.
I purchased a 2001 Expedition in June 2001. From day 1, it has had a vibration when it reaches 61 mph or higher. I was told by the dealer that they couldn't detect the vibration. I took the vehicle back and took the service worker for a ride, the vibration was detected. They said it was probably a drive shaft imbalance. The vibration has now gotten a little worse.
Trip 2 to the dealer, my tires were replaced. Still there was a vibration. I hooked my boat up and at 61 mph the vibration was so bad I had to slow to 60 (in a 70) so I could keep the vehicle on the road.
Trip 3 to the dealer, my rear axle was checked as well as my wheels. Still a vibration.
Trip 4, my drive shaft was replaced again, my motor was adjusted on the mounts and the tires were rebalanced. The vibration is worse than when I started.
I am now waiting on a dampener which I sincerely doubt will fix the problem. If it fixes the problem, what about the possible damage to the vehicle due to more than 4000 miles worth of vibration?
We bought a Ford 1/2 ton conversion with the same problem. Took it to Wal mart, got new tires and it doesn't vibrate at all. Also it could be a bent rim. We have a 1987 Ford Ranger with a bent rim and when you hit about 55-60 MPH it starts vibrating. I don't know if this is what is wrong, but it might be worth a look.
I had the same vibration problem on my 2000 Eddie Bauer. Ford said they had some complaints about same problem, they told me before coming in to dealer, to go to the tire store (Goodyear) after taking all 4 tires off and checking them, they said;"We are replacing all 4 at no charge" (they had 19,000 miles on them) After replacing, the bad vibration is now gone. I'm very pleased how Ford/Goodyear treated me.
I purchased a brand new 2001 XLT Ford Expedition in April of 2001. Four months after the purchase I returned to the dealership because the vehicle would idle, I was provided a rental and about 2 days later my vehicle was ready. About two months later, I returned to the dealership again with a different problem again I was put in a rental and 3 days later I picked up my expedition. About two months after that, my transmission was out; same process with dealership and rental and a new transmission was installed in my vehicle. About 3 months later my transmission seams to be out again, but it is discovered, 2 days later, that it is a sensor; again same process wiht dealership and rental. Four months later another brand new transmission is installed and 8 days later in a rental, I am off towards home again hoping I will not have to return to the dealership again for another major repair, after all I do pay $778 per month for vehicle reliability for my self and three children.
In our 2000 Expedition XLT we have had the same rough-idling in gear at stops. We took it to the dealer, paid hundreds to fix it, but it didn't fix it. It still idles roughly.
It hasn't resulted in any major problems yet so we don't mind much.
We have a 2001 Ford Expedition that had a very bad vibration and also the steering pulled to the left. We made three trips to the dealership for alignment, all under warranty. The third trip to the dealership they replaced the ball joints and re-aligned again. Vibration was still there and so was the pull to the left. I then took the Expedition to the local Good Year store. They checked all four tires and replaced the two front tires. After two new tires were put on the front, the vibration and the pull to the left was completely gone.
Vehicle drives and rides very smooth now even at interstate highway speeds of 70-80 mph. Ford and Good Year both treated us great on this.
I'm having problems with a 2001 Ford Expedition EB- 5.4L. I've had this unexplainable whining noise comming from the rear of the engine - transmission area. I've had the dealer give me the ol' "this is a ghost hunt, I don't hear anything" for about 3 weeks. Turns out yesterday that the ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT just went on. After charging me $125.00 just to hook-up the computer I'm told it's sending (2) transmission service codes to the computer and I'll probally be needing a new transmission!! At 61,000 California miles what a piece of junk. Wonder if when I first noticed the sound it could have been avoided 3 weeks ago? Repair estimate $2300.00.
I have a 1997 Ford Expedition 4x4. Up until about 2-1/2 years ago I barely drove it above 40 mph. It was mostly for in town driving with my dog. Since then I sold my other truck and started driving the Expedition more often. That is about the time that I noticed that it vibrating pretty bad around 60-70, but was easily felt starting around 40mph.
I took it to the dealer; they told me that it is a tire problem. “This big truck is over sized and should have heavy duty tires.” So, taking their advise I went and bought Goodyear Wranglers AT/S LT265/70R17 from Goodyear which set me back $1200 bucks out the door. And vibration was still there.
Took it back to the dealer and said, no it wasn’t the tires. Try again. Well the answer came back, “This is a big truck and Ford built them with under rated shocks. Replace the shocks with something a little more heavy and that should fix it.” So I told them to replace the shocks with something heavy for about $400 bucks. And the vibration is still there.
Brought it back to Goodyear and told them that Ford thinks it was the tires and I replaced them. Ford said it was the shocks, I replaced them. They did an alignment and thrust alignment and nothing. They didn’t even charge me because everything was correct. They suggested that it could the drive train, since the tires are new and the alignment is correct and the vibration could only be felt at speeds above 40mph.
Brought it back to the dealer again bringing the information from Goodyear. They told me that the tires need to be replaced before that can accurately diagnose the vibration. The new tires are 10K old by now. Right now the Expedition is back at Goodyear getting new tires and an alignment. That’s another $360 per tire that is going to cost me around $1500 for new tires…again.
I wonder what Ford is going to say now.
I'm on my 2nd trasmission with 65K on my 2002. I don't have vibration problems, so I guess I lucked out. My complaint is that the starter went bad at 30K, and 2nd tranny at 65K. These cars are not good family cars in suburbs, as the weak tranny and maint. is meant for heavy duty use, as well as constant repairs. I'm probably going to buy the Toyota Sequoia at the end of this year, as Fords always seem to have problems.
Me and my wife bought a used 2001 ford expedition eddie bauer.. when we were test driving it, we noticed that the radio didn't work.. on the second test drive we noticed that the radio only worked in park and neutral.. thinkin it was just a bad radio, we decided to purchase it.. later that night, it started to snow heavily, and noticed that not only does the radio only work in park and neutral, but also the rear windshield wipers. we also noticed that in drive, the radio and rear wipers didn't work, and also when you shift from park to drive, the front wipers wouldn't work for up to 60 seconds.. then we noticed that if your blare the horn, the radio would work.. we took the expedition back to the dealership, and they are now fixing the problem at no cost.. I was just wondering if anyone else has had that same problem with their ford..
I have a 2001 Ford Expedition E.B. Used 85K miles... I Love it it doesn't vibrate that much but it does a lil when I'm on the HWY.. the only prob I had is the heater core.. other than that I LOVE MY TRUCK... I think I was blessed by god..AMeN.
