I have a GC 200 Ltd. and am the only owner of it. I haven't read all of the reviews here, but the ones I have read I have had the same problems. I have had 2 doors and the tailgate lock go out. I have also had the driver window motor fail. I am also on my 2nd failed left tail light. I bought a used one off ebay and it has now gone on me.

Even with these problems I still love my car. It could be a lot worse than a $200 bill once every year or so.

Hello all JGCL 2000 owners. 4 months after getting my brand new Jeep from dealer I got stopped by a CHP officer and received a fix it ticket for the left tail brake light not working, I took to dealer and they replaced. 2 days later I went again and had it replaced. After warranty expired, the same problem occured with tail light. I called the dealer and they said I needed to replace the entire left tail light assembly which runs about $180.00 each, then joined your famous duck chorus, coming from driver side, soon after, the front passanger side could not be opened. In order to open driver side I have to press the remote control to open, then insert the key. A couple of times, mind you, I could not get out of my car, had to jump to the front passanger side (dressed on a skirt suit) in order to get out, and another time had to get to the right rear passanger side to get out of the car! The front passenger side won't open unless I do it manually from the inside. Then the tweeters had to be replaced, the 10 cd changer went off as well, so now I can't play my cd's, then the stereo volume goes up automatically. So as I am driving and listening to the radio I have to turn the volume down many times or just turn it off. Then the driver door window won't go down, then the right rear passanger window won't go up, just recently the tail gate would not open. The head light covers are so cloudy that I will have to replace both of them in order to drive safely at night and each at the dealer cost $303.00 at Casa de Gonzales in South Gate, CA. That is a rip off! My husband just replaced the driver side window motor assembly. The cable and motor assembly were damaged. This cost $145.00 at the dealer. We checked for the door actuators at the dealer for both front doors and each run at about $380.00 excluding labor. Now we are having second thought about replacing actuators or light assemblies because they will soon go off again. We will never purchase another Jeep -NEVER!!! We invested on a "made in the US" vehicle to help our economy, but NEVER, EVER again! We have spent all morning reading the postings from all. And we agree, we paid top dollar for junk. We want to make a formal complaint to Daimler Chrysler addressing these issues. Please contact us at jfurtake@yahoo.com or inform us if you already have placed your complaint, we would like to add our name to it.

Thanks.

JC.

I have a 2000 JGC Larado (actually two, my wife has a 2002).

Her's has been great. Mine the tail light problem and the quacking. Tail lights fixed via the info here (pry out the contact).

Question on the door actuator - Has anyone actually replaced their actuator with the Harada DL01 per the 1/6/06 post. I have the problem with my driver side front and passenger doors. I was planning on trying the drivers side first. I bought the actuator from EBay (simple and think it was $21 with shipping). Took apart the door and can't figure for the life of me how this should go in. I am guessing it won't work on the drivers door because you also need the key lock rod attachment too. I just haven't pulled apart the drivers side rear door to see if it will work there.

Any insight on how to install the Harada would help.

Has anyone pulled the driver's side rear interior trim panel off of a 99-03 Grand Cherokee? I'm trying to install the T-One trailer wiring harness and I'm not sure if there are plastic rivets or screws or something else attaching the thing. Thanks.

I've had to replace 3 door lock actuators on my 2000 Laredo. I called Chrysler twice and they finally told me they don't make the recalls and I would have to file a complaint with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Association). So I did. Please contact them and file your complaint about these serious safety problems with your Jeep. Call 1-888-327-4236 or

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site/nhtsa/menuitem.9fee1be6b2b2000bc22cf37490008a0c/

It takes just a few minutes. If the NHTSA knew how many door lock actuators and rear light failures are occurring, I'm sure they will make a safety recall.

Hi - I just bought a 2000 GC Laredo the other day. It is absolutely beautiful and I LOVE IT - however, I just found out last night that the back doors won't lock with the remote lock or from driver's side door lock that is supposed to lock all four (I think). The only way to lock the two back doors is by manually doing it from the doors themselves - same with unlocking them. The remote and the driver's door button will lock the two front doors and the hatch. I have not heard the "quacking" sound that I have read about in these posts. Do you think the actuators or whatever they are need to be replaced in the two back doors? Also, just noticed today when driving about 60 mph, it has "kicked or jumped" while driving. I am assuming my tranny will be going out soon. I am so depressed about this. I love this jeep so much, but have not read much good about it and in only a few days since having it, am already having problems. It has 133,000 miles on it, but it looks brand new. I know with this many miles, something is going to go wrong, but once fixed, will it be the end?? Or are the problems ongoing with this year jeep as seems to be in the posts? Anyone got anything good to say about this year jeep?

Thanks for any replies :)

I have a love/hate relationship going on with my 2001 Laredo. I love the way it looks and it drives great (right now!) but I keep having lock, window and ignition problems like so many other people on here. The ignition switch went out a few months ago and I had to have it towed to the dealership. That cost about $350. The back hatch lock has been broken for about six months and since I am going on vacation in 2 weeks, I broke down and decided it was time to fix that. I refuse to give the dealership any more money!

It took me forever to find a lock actuator online, but I finally did at JeepTweeter. com and that was about $97 with tax and s/h. They also have installation directions with pics so that should be helpful when I get the part. And just last weekend my passenger side window started "slipping" and fell right into the door! We took the door panel off, and the cord on the regulator was all kinked, and some of the plastic pieces were broken. So I have one of those ordered from 1AAuto.com for $111 now.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I will probably have to eventually replace the regulators on the other windows as well. Other people have said that once one goes bad, they all start to go. I guess it could be worse; it's just getting tiresome since I've only had this car for a year!

I've own my 2000 JGCL for a little over a year now. I have had similar problems, but I can't believe some of the prices you are paying for Chrysler only parts. Especially considering I bought mine from a Chrysler dealership as well.

I have had both door lock actuators go on the driver's side. The driver's side door was about $150 CAD for the actuator with the bars that were there. The rear driver's side door was $92 CAD. I don't know where that lady who said she paid over $300 USD each was getting her parts.

I've had the driver's side brake light go as well, but all I did was take out the light, clean the connectors, replace the bulb and everything was working fine again.

I'm also having a problem with the signa light relay, where when it gets too warm, the passenger side light stops flashing after a while. I think the new relay should fix that. I paid about $75 CAD for that at a Chrysler dealership.

Replacing both actuators was very easy. You can easily find the instructions online if you look for them. The door panels pop off easily once you've removed the screws. On the front door, there's three. One in the hole in the door where you will pull it closed, one behind the circular cover up by the mirror and a torx screw behind the door handle. The back door has two screws, one in the hole where you pull the door closed and a torx screw behind the door handle.

Once you've popped off the door panels, you have to unhook the bars and the plug to the buttons. Just push the plastic tab off the bars and then pull them out. Unplug the wire then you can safely remove the panel. This is on both doors.

Pull back the plastic covering. Be careful not to tear the plastic flap behind the rods, although you may get some initial tearing. Reach in and unclasp the pars from the door handle and lock on the front door. Just the door handle on the back.

There are three torx screws T-30 in size on the side of the door where the latch is. I used an air ratchet to remove these and they were pretty easy to remove. Just slide out the old one and replace it with the new one. It may be easier for you to remove the bars from the plastic tabs after unfastening it from the door.

All in all, it took me about 30min to do each door, which is considerably less than letting Chrysler do it, since they have it at an hour and a half to do on the books.

Put the bars back in place where they are supposed to go and the power plug to the buttons. When placing the door back on, be careful and make sure all the panel pins are in place. One wrong move and you can snap a couple of them.

As for lights, you can call a wreckers or buy them off eBay for relatively cheap. You can easily find OEM parts for the Jeep and you can get both of them at the fraction of a price of one. I think it's about $80 USD for both front stock headlights and around the same amount for stock tail lights.

Thank goodness for this page. Just wanted to comment regarding the crazy light situation. The rear park lights stopped working completely on my 99 Jeep GC and the brake lights only came on with the park/headlight switch turned off. So... the brake lights came on during the day (dimly) and NOTHING worked at night. I did as one post suggested and switched the bottom and top gray plugs that the light bulbs are installed into. Presto... both tail lights started working perfectly. I don't know exactly why and I don't care. One traffic ticket is one too many for me. Thanks for the advice.

Yep same here!, I've replaced all the locks on my 2000 gc (and for the record the replacement have different part #'s then the original) and am having the issue with the brake light. I have 2 problems actually 1) sometimes the brake lights won't turn off and will still be on when I come back to the vehicle, 2) brake light one come on (same as everyone else) but mine is the right side.

Last but not least...I'm also a victim of the horrible yellow lights which by the way can be bought through aftermarket companies for the same price and be a little more stylish.

I have a Jeep 2000 Grand Cherokee and have had all the issues listed in these posts. I have posted some pics for the lock actuator replacement along with a sound on movie of the quack for those interested here: http://junkken.blogspot.com/

I too found this page due to the tail light issue and will try the quick fix and pray it works.

For those of you who have the lurching tranny issue and the rough idle issue I might be able to help with that. I had those issues as well as the repeating injector code issues also. I purchased my own code reader (to clear the phantom injector code check engine lights that came on at least twice a week) and noticed that once I got a code for the throttle position sensor. It has been almost a year since changing it out and I have not had any of the previous driveability issues and the injector codes have not reappeared either.

No promises that this will work for everyone but it only takes 2 minutes to change and you can always return the part if it doesn't work for you.

Hello Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo owners.

After reading the threads posted I am still having a problem with my 2001 JGCL tail lights. my brake and signal lights work but my actual tail lights don't work even when my head lights are off. I went through the steps someone left on here as to try and fix the problem myself but everything looks fine the ground has nothing around it and I did pry it up, my bulbs are not blown and everything is lined up correctly. can someone please help me with my problem? I went to the dealer and without looking he just told me to replace the lamps but if I am going to continue having this problem I don't want to buy the lamps because I want to know what the problem is.

Thanks.

Claude

Great site. Interesting that so many folks are having the same difficulties as I am with my 2000 Grand Cherokee. I replaced the left brake light assembly because that brake light was seldom working.

I have the problem with the left turn signal not working intermittently and found that when I flip on the left blinker and it doesn't work, I just toggle the flashers on and off and the turn signal then works.

I haven't addressed the growling door lock yet. Driver's side door needs to be unlocked by the remote, and then by key.

Latest problem is also electrical. Lose all power but the battery is strong. Gauges will all move in unison with the car off, even though lights, radio, etc. don't work and car won't start. It's been suggested it might be a bad ground, so that's this evening's chore - try to chase that down.
