I own a 2000 Jeep GCLtd. about 2 weeks ago, I started hearing this odd buzzing, quacking sound in the passenger door, left side/drivers side. That led to here after googleing the symptoms. I feel like I just got a diagnosis of a terminal disease that can only be fixed with constant re-administration of actuators. I will use this sight in the future for updates and thanks for the information so far. I will also contact Jeep about the problem. I wonder what the news agency would say about auto makers who know their product have problems and are not willing to fix them? I also wonder if there is a safety issue regarding the doors coming open during rollover. I rolled my 2003 last year, the passenger door came unlocked and looked like an accordion. I love jeep products, I want this problem taken care of. OK, thanks all.

I have a 2000 GC laredo, and I'm having the same problems as a lot of you. My liftgate used to make that loud quaking noise it would lock if I tried a couple times, but now that noise is gone and it won't lock. I've taken off the cover and looked at the lock actuator and it seems not to be moving to the lock position, I can move the lever over to lock and it would keep the trunk locked and it would unlock after, but it won't go back to that lock position when I try and lock it. Has anyone been successfull with opening up the actuator and fixing it?
Took the advise from another post on brake/taillights... TOTALLY WORKED!!! a small piece of foil under the ground connection and TAADAA!! I have all of my lights back... so glad I didn't go out and pay the $200 AGAIN to get it fixed this time.
I am also having the same problems. The left rear door has made the duck sound for the past year and a half, but still works. The liftgate lock has not worked ever since we got the jeep 2 years ago. We are now having to replace the fan and also, the keyless entry has never worked either. Has anyone else had problems with the keyless entry? I took it to the jeep dealer to get it reprogrammed, but that was not the problem they said, and that they did not know what it was. I do know one thing, we will never buy a jeep again.
I am having a variation of the common tail light problem in my 1999 Grand Cherokee. During daytime driving, the brake lights do not work. During nighttime driving, the brake lights light up to the normal dim setting, but they do not intensify when the brakes are pressed. I saw some other postings mention a brake switch as a possible cause of this problem. Any info about this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I have searched until my eyes are crossed. I need three for Jeep 2000 GC. And I am reporting the Chrysler after reading all the posts here and everywhere.
I am so glad I found this site! I think I've had every problem listed on this site plus a few more...1) blown tweeters (both), 2) both front door lock actuators, 3) tail lights, and additionally 4) broken radiator fan, 5) non functioning reverse lights, and 6) some sort of malfunctioning connection next to the transmission that prevented my car from starting. Fortunately I was able to fix the first three myself saving who knows how much money. The radiator fan was a six hundred dollar repair and the electrical connection was $100. Unfortunately, I haven't repaired the reverse lights which leads me to my questions. Has anyone else had this problem? What was the problem? How did you fix it? I believe it's the switch since both lights went out at the same time and the bulbs look fine.
I have a 2000 GC v8. I am having tail light problems. When I turn on the taillights, they do not come on; however, the brake lights come on and the flashers work and the back up lights work. What is a fix for this?
Also, The rear tailgate is in the lock position and doesn't unlock with the flip of the switch and I have the growling sound. What is a quick fix for this? What do I look for when going into the access panel on the tailgate to get this thing unlocked?
SOME GOOD ADVICE ON SPEAKERS AND DOOR LOCK MOTORS: I have a 99 JGC that I bought off a friends dad, first my tweeters go bad, so being $$ broke, I decided to go the cheap route and spend something like 49 dollars for a set of cheap tweeters on ebay, big big mistake, I get the speakers which were obviously made in some guys shed or something, they fit fine, but blew in 2 months, went to the dealer and he wanted 75 bucks a pop.. I went back on ebay and bought a set of OEM Mopars from this guy for 95 plus s/h, he emailed me installation instructions which I didn't need, but they had pics as well, he also sold me a passengers side door lock motor I think he is called 2pondloop or something like that, anyway, problems solved, cheaper than the dealer and back to factory spec.. nice having my tunes again and not hearing that buzzing noise..

I have a 2000 GC Laredo, I have been looking for weatherstripping for the rear lift gate. I would like to find an after-market dealer in light of the high dealer cost. Does anyone have any good leads???
I also own a 2000 G. JC and I have the taillight issue as well. We recently had a huge snow storm and yesterday I notice my ABS working when I was barely pressing down on the brake, today the ABS & Brake light both came on. I pulled over pumped the brakes and the lights went off. This evening on my way home from work again the lights came on and never went off. The brakes were mushy, but I could at least pump them and get some pressure. I had a few people tell me that it may be an ice build up, however the temp went above 40 today... any ideas?
This is an update to my comment posted "4th Mar 2006, 12:24" about my list of 2000 GCL problems. I'm at 66,000 miles now (6 cylinder) and just replaced my second Door Lock Actuator. It may help someone to know that the passenger Door Lock Actuator is completely different (and more expensive) than the rear lift gate one. The installation wasn't hard to do except for those white plastic clips holding the door panel. It was just like the procedure shown on junkken.blogspot.com, except my price was $20 more than he paid.
So my GCL 1c. comment should say the part is either $77 (rear lift gate) or $95 (doors) at the dealer.
I also have a new problem which I thought was unique until I read the post "7th Nov 2006, 21:14". I too have a rattle in the front end, although its my front passenger side instead of driver side.
GCL 4. I would describe it like they did- Often when I hit a bump at slow speeds I hear a sound from my front passenger side like something is loose. If you can imagine something loose in the glove-box that's what it is like (and no, I took all the contents out to be sure it wasnt). I took mine to a (non-dealer) shop, but they couldn't find anything, and said the alignment and what-not was OK.
At that time I didn't know anyone else had this problem, so I have been living with it.

WOW! I'm glad I am not alone.. I have ALSO having a door "quack" problem, but mine is a little different..
I locked my keys in my car about 2 weeks ago, and a buddy of mine tried to open the passenger door using a slimjim. Anyway, it ended up not working and I had to call a roadside assistance service to open it.. All was well, until about 1 week later, when my passenger side lock starting making a thumping noise every time I locked it. Within 2 days, this noise turned more into a sccreetching, quack like noise. It occurs every time I lock that door (not when I unlock). Also, the door functions correctly, but is just making a very embarrassing, annoying sound. I noticed if I lock the door over and over, the quack gets higher and higher, as if pressure is building up.. Eventually, after letting the "pressure" build up, it will stop making the noise, but also stop function. If I unlock the door using the remote, it will go back to normal, with a lower pitch noise. What the heck is going on? Did the slimjim cause damage? Also, one other quick problem, I noticed that sometimes, while driving with my air conditioner on full blast, it will all of the sudden shut off. And then a minute or 2 later, start back up? PLEASE help me, I'm going to pull my hair out, lol.. Thank you!

I have also had the "duck quack" problem in my RF passenger door. I have to unlock it from the inside, and open it from the outside... although my wife likes me letting her out of the car! I have found an actuator that I am considering buying, but I wanted to check with anyone on this site who might know... Is there anything else that has to be replaced in the door to fix this problem, or, can I simply replace the actuator and be done with it? Any comments? Suggestions?

None of the doors on my 2000 JGC work properly. All make a quacking noise. Yesterday I made a quick trip to the store to grab some things for my brother's wake and couldnt get the doors to unlock. DEAD, DEAD, DEAD. I tried calling everyone at my parent's house, but there were so many people there, no one heard the phones ring, so I had to take a taxi back to their house. I replaced the batteries and did the eight time thing, and it still won't unlock the doors. Even my key won't unlock. I, like a previous poster have looked for actuators online, but I am just hitting dead ends. If anyone can tell me where to buy these other than the dealership, please speak up. Many of us would appreciate it. And I am complaining to headquarters.
