I have a 2002 x-type sport with all the toys, yesterday I was driving and I pressed the window button and suddenly the whole electrical system died, radio, GPS, AC, even the hydraulic steering died, I continued driving and 10 minutes later everything went back to normal. I went home and later that night took the car out, I was looking for an address and as I flickered the high beams and the electrical system died again. I parked and turned off the engine, as I tried to turn it back on, there was no electricity. 2 hours later I got on the car and it started normally. Has anybody experienced this before?
With over 80k miles on my X-Type I've had two maintenance issues: a rubber ring in the vacuum system and a leaking water pump. I've NEVER been stranded in this vehicle.
Individuals with horror stories are probably abusing their cars or aren't having them serviced at the dealership.
If you're a miser and demand "reliability", go buy a practical car like a Honda or Toyota. Your neighborhood franchised service center will gladly accept your 15% discount coupon on the $19.99 oil change.

The X-type is based on the Ford Mondeo platform so it should NOT be that complicated or expensive a car to maintain and/or fix.
I too have a 2002 Jaguar X-type 2.5. I can assure you I have always treated the vehicle like gold. Unfortunately, I used to have numerous problems with it. Unfortunately, I've had a poor experience with the dealership as well. My car was towed to the dealership twice within the first six months. A hose blew from the radiator. I have had engine problems, transmission problems, door opening/closing problems etc. Fortunately, everything has been fine the last year and a half, with the exception of the passenger door that Jaguar could never fix. It opens sometimes and other times it will not (very embarrassing when I have passengers). Unfortunately, my trunk will not open all of a sudden. I can't open it with the key or the green button on the lid of the trunk. That's what brought me to this forum. I'm researching a way to fix it, because I am sick of the dealership. Anyway, I felt compelled to respond to a prior users' comment that people encountering problems with their Jaguars were abusing them. I can assure you this was not the case with me, and not likely the others either. I love the look of the car, but will unlikely ever purchase another.
I bought a 2002 X type 3.0 liter in 2001. It seemed to be reliable for the first two years and only minor repairs needed. However, one thing lead to another. First it was the gear box fault and check engine light. When on the highway, I could have sworn I hit something on the road the way the car jerked and the RPMS jumped from 2000 to 2900 in seconds. The "Cruise Not available" immediately came on. It went away and then happened again and again. Driver side door latch is tricky. You have to lift up, push the door in, and pull it open... like a secondary theft deterrent!! Thermostat was replaced, left front ABS sensor went out, intermittent wipers don't work and when the car is in park, but still running???...The dad gum heater blows nothing, but cold air!! It was $270 to replace a rearview mirror and heaven forbid you change a tire and the casings on the lug nuts strip off...$10 a pop. At one point in time it was a dream for me to own this car, but never...ever..would I buy another Jaguar or recommend one to anyone else... especially after a $6,200 transmission replacement.
I can't believe I find this page NOW. But of course when you buy a car from a reputable dealer (used even) with only 36K on it and it's a 2002 you think. WHAT COULD BE WRONG!! OMG! I've owned it for 6 months now and just NOW the last 3 weeks I've gone into *limp mode* at the most inconvenient places. I replaced the battery DIDN'T work. Luckily I have a wonderful mechanic who's going to come get it at my work tomorrow and *diagnose* the problem. I know he already knows what's wrong. I hope it's not expensive. NOT HAPPY! My work requires I have a functioning car. I wish I would have researched before I bought it. Now I'm stuck. Can someone help me decide If I should keep it. ducatilvr@hotmail.com.
Soon after receiving my new X-type 3.0 Sport it became apparent that it was extremely difficult to drive the car smoothly and at low revs the vehicle kangarooed. On engaging first gear the car lurches, and once in motion the drive-train whines. This makes for a very unpleasant driving experience.
The vehicle has also suffered from amongst other things air-conditioning failure, several recalls, repeated central locking failure, acrid odour in the cabin, passenger seat airbag faults, corrosion of alloy wheels, boot release failure, and a notable ‘clunk’ following starting up.
In 2004 I bought a new Jaguar X Type SE Automatic. From the beginning the car "kangarooed" when under load e. g driving at 30 mph along a hilly road. I took the car back to the dealer several times, but despite explanations such as "we have reset the computer, try using high octane fuel, etc etc" the problem continued. In September of this year I told the dealer (a main Jag dealership) that I was not prepared to accept any more "it could be" and wanted the problem solved before the warranty expired
They phoned the next day to say that the gearbox was faulty and that I needed a new auto gearbox. When they came to do the work I got another phone call to say that Jaguar head office wouldn't agree to the replacement (under warranty) and they said that I should drive in 'Sport Mode' to alleviate the problem. I was amazed.
What do you think? Anyone else had this problem?
I own a 2002 Jaguar 2.0 sport manual. I would like to know if anyone has had problems with gearbox when cold? I find the shift very crunchy when cold... Could anyone reply if they have experienced the same problem?
I just bought a 2002 X-type 3.0L. Recently, the engine has started making a noise a lower RPMs (around 1500) that resembles a mix between grinding and gurgling.
No lamps have lit, and I haven't got any messages. There is no change in power, either. Just a noise.
The dealer said that they changed the oil, but I think they're full of crap. I checked it the other day after putting only 500 miles on it, and it's black as pitch. I'm hopeful it's just in dire need of an oil change.
Is anyone experiencing this, or has experienced and knows what it is? Does anyone think that it might just be an octane issue?
Thanks!

Oh, and for the people that say that the X-type is based on the Ford Mondeo. To clarify, it shares only 18% of the components, and they are things you wouldn't notice like the floor pan and wiper motor. I'd like to point out that Rolls Royce Phantom shares 15% of it's components with the BMW 7-Series.
I have 2002 Jaguar X-2 2.5 and it goes into limp mode, especially when it is cold and will not allow me to accelerate. Can someone please tell me how to get it out of limp mode, because the dealership is wanting me to carry it hours away to fix, and I am not able to do so?
2003 Jaguar X-type, new. All maintenance performed by dealer. Beautiful car to all senses when running right.
Several minor problems followed by major internal engine failure.
I agree with previous poster that Jag is not meant to be a boring reliable car. I find Lexus to be boring. Nevertheless, I am not interested in wasting time and money on unreliable transportation and will look elsewhere for a new vehicle.
To answer the your question on the gear box shifting rough when cold... YES!! I do have the same problem with mine, as well as many other problems such as the intake manifold, the O2 sensor, coolent temp sensor, my check engine light is on more than I turn my bathroom light on... It is a money eating worthless piece of junk, and the dealer doesn't believe the rough shifting is a problem.
I have the new model x-type 2.2D soverign estate registered march 2008 and it is fabulous.
2002 X-type 2.5 SE auto 54k 1 owner from new, full jag service history, very contented with my baby jag.
Not concerned with purist's who can only comment that the car share's its chassis and power plant with the Mondeo.
1. The chassis is one of the best on the market
2. The V6 engine was designed by Porsche, sold under license to Cosworth, who were later acquired by Ford Motor-sport.
Further more all major manufacturers base new models on previous chassis plans and parts; its cheaper and more cost effective than having to re-tool the factory to design from fresh.
My last car was also part of the British Leyland family, a Land Rover Discovery 200 tdi; that shared the Range Rover Classic chassis and running gear.
Don't read these comment if you're looking for advice, every mass produced car has its problems. As Land Rover say, you have ONE LIFE SO LIVE IT.
