Hi. My name is Dan. I am having problems with my 2003 Jaguar. I purchased the car with 40,000 miles on the car. From the time of the purchase, it has been in the shop for warranty work several times. They have replace more things than I have room to mention. It is going back into the shop for additional warranty work this coming week. There is engine oil coming from the oil pan, the drive shaft is throwing oil everywhere and the air conditioner is not cooling. I have taken the car to other dealerships, and they have informed me that there is nothing wrong with the AC. But it does not cool, and while the car is idling, there is pracitcally no AC. Thank God for the moon roof, so we can get some air as we drive down the road. I wonder if this new dealership will be honest about the AC because it is about out of warranty now. This is the first Jag that I have owned, and had always wanted one. This experiece has left a lot to be desired. I wonder if this is only on American cars, or do the European cars have the same problems. I traded in a 2003 Platinum edition suburban for this car which was a much better auto. It had 99,000 miles and had no mechanical problems. If anyone can give me some advice on how to solve these problems please e-mail me at duckk12@hotmail.com. I want to keep the car because it is beautiful. It is Zircon, with a black interior, and looks showroom new. I am becoming paranoid to drive it. Please help. Dan.

More on the automatic transmission issue. I was just told that my transmission needs replacing (68,000 miles). I am pretty shocked since I have have had the car serviced by the dealer every 5,000 miles. I'll see if there is any honor at Jaguar when I talk to customer service. The UK media indicates that there is a significant number of X-Types, both 2.5 and 3.0s, with automatic transmission failures.

I have just been informed that my 2002 3.0 x-type needs a new transmission. I was shocked. But maybe not so shocked after reading this blog. I have 48,000 miles and have never had much of a problem with it until now. I can't beleive someone said the trans. should be replaced every 4 to 5 years. How convenient. Just 8000 Miles after the warranty expires. Any recourse?...

My manual transmission on my leased 2005 X-Type 3.0 Sport failed last week at 15,000 miles. I was humiliatingly stranded with 5 neutrals in the middle of a busy intersection right outside my work place! I had up to that point been considering buying the car at lease end, early next year. The dealer told me that they had never had a Jaguar manual gear box fail and there is no record of problems with manuals (only auto’s). So can anyone tell me, are most of the above comments for auto’s gearbox cars? Suspect at least one was a manual gearbox. Anyhow I was informed that the problem was the gearbox output shaft pulling out of the transfer box, which to me seems like a major transmission design weakness. The dealer service people tell me a cir-clip let go. A new warranty gearbox and transfer case is to be installed, costing $13,000! Fortunately it is a leased car from new, since I did have my concerns about Jaguar’s reliability, but never expected anything like this! Up until this point I’d been very happy with that car.

Thanks for all our your comments above-I looked at one today and brought it home for my wife to look at as well. I need to bring it back to the dealer tomorrow-either with a check or without. This would mean either a purchase or walking away from the "paper weight"

There is too little time in the world to worry about replacing a transmision if you ask me.

Thanks again.

I purchased a jaguar x type and the transmission blew at about 58,000 miles. This car is an average ride with many problems. I am fully covered with an extended warranty. If you buy this car make sure to get the extra warranty because a new transmission will cost 3500 to 5000 dollars.

I purchased a new Jaguar 2002 X-type. Very recently, with 30,000 miles and 4 months out of warranty, 4th gear went out. The local service dept said it would cost $7100 to replace the transmission. The car had been serviced every 5,000 miles by another dealer closer to work. Jaguar agreed to give a $3500 credit towards the purchase of a new Jaguar. I am now the proud owner of a 2004 Audi A6 with less than 30,000 miles.

2001 2.5 X-Type AWD Auto Trans - Total Failure @ 62000 Miles on a 'full service history car - known from new' There is a Jaguar 'Service Bulletin' S941V3 Transmision Replacement x400 X Type All Years - Service Action Bulletin. I'm now trying to get a copy, if anyone has one, let me know.

Out of order for an auto trans to let go at such a low mileage. We've been runing auto boxes in other make family cars (not Jag) for years, may of which have done well over 100,000 Miles.

I am the original owner of an 02 Jaguar X-type. I did successfully file a complaint and recover some of my hard earned money after having my car at the dealers too many times. The dealer was really nice about the loaner car, but I did not pay $47,000 for them to just keep fixing my car. Now I am out of warranty and having to replace a transmission at 62,000 miles. The dealer says, this is unusual, and again, they do not want to stand up for their product. I have also just filed a complaint with the National Traffic Safety Administration. I believe if they get enough complaints, they can force a recall, and or reimbursement.

All should know - and you can confirm this by looking at the window sticker of a new X-type at your dealership: Automatic transmission made in Japan. This transmission is made by a Japanese company named JATCO. It is the Jatco JF506E. It has a highly reported frequency of failure in both the Jaguar X-Type and the Land Rover Freelander. I had one replaced in my Freelander, that's why I was sure to buy my X-type with a manual transmission (Getrag MTX75).

I don't know about frequency of JATCO failure in other vehicles, but you can find this same transmission in: 2000-up Mazda MPV, 2003-up Mazda 6, 2002-up Land Rover Freelander, 2002-up Jaguar X-type, Ford Galaxy & Rover 75, 2002-up VW GTi, 2002-03 VW Jetta and 2004-up VW Golf. I did find people reporting high rate of failures in Mazda's.

Don't worry guys, you can buy the JATCO re-built on EBay and other places for less than $2000 U.S. You should be me, I'm paying $6000 U.S. for my Freelander's THIRD Motor, made by Powertrain, a subsidiary of the now defunct MG Rover.

I thought I would add to this thread in the hope that it helps spread the word.

I have a 2001 X Type 3.0 (UK) and the transmission gave up at 48,000 miles! Full dealer service history, but no remorse from the dealer. Phoning around transmission specialist, I'm hearing many sorry tails about the autos giving in around 50-60K. I've got a cheap re-build (less than half the quoted dealer price) but that's giving me grief now. My dude that repaired it thinks it just needs a transmission fluid top-up. Seeing as he is miles away, I was going to do it myself, but I can't find the pipe to put the oil into...doh!

I see a lot of blame written here about the Jaguar X Type transmission. Jaguar in an effort to produce a car that the general public could afford, built the X Type. IT is not a tarted up Ford. However, they did use a Japanese built transmission made by Jatco. Jatco is notorious for problems. The bigger Jags use the Borg Warner tranny, the same tranny that's in the Rolls Royce. Unfortunately, if you have one of these Japanese transmissions in your English made automobile there is a good chance you will encounter a problem. The remedy? Demand quality! Jaguar made a poor choice with this transmission. However, if you look at the JD Power Reports, Jag and Lexus are tied for number 1 and 2 respectively for quality, performance and reliability. Pretty impressive. And Jag is still the best built car out there.

I cannot find anyone who knows what sort of oil to use in the X type transfer case.

I was looking for information on my 2002 Jaguar X Type that I purchased in Aug 06. It had 24000 miles on it at the time and is currently at 36000 miles. Three weeks ago, driving home on a Sunday, we heard a loud thump. Thinking we had been hit by another vehicle, we looked around. Nothing there. My husband got out of the vehicle and to our dismay, the rear differential was laying on the ground. Yep, on the ground. Apparently, we are being told, that the mount broke due to faulty casting. We are very fortunate to have bought the extended warranty so it will be covered. However, we are now 3 weeks into it, and still do not have our vehicle back. I guess we should have bought the Toyota.
