I own a 2000 Jimmy, when it rains water is getting into the passenger floor board. The weather stripping doesn't seem to be damaged, could the door hinge cause this? I've never replaced mine.
My gas gauge stopped working last winter. When I fill up it will go to full, when it gets down to 1/2 tank it heads back up to full again. Does anyone know what it would take to fix this?
I really love my Jimmy, if I could just get the gas gauge working and door to stop leaking.
I have the same problem with the fuel gauge on my 2000 GMC Jimmy. When it gets to 1/2 full, the needle starts swinging back and forth. Is this an expensive fix???
Same problem here. 2000 Jimmy SLT. I'm wondering if it got some high sulfur content fuel, that may have damaged the silver sensor in the fuel tank. Does anyone know for sure if the Jimmy has a silver sensor?
Bought my 1999 Jimmy SLS, 4x4, 4 Door in Oct. 2003. Vehicle had 103000 KM on it and was mint throughout.
The reclining handles for the seats broke on both sides, no big deal.
Never had any oil problems or major engine problem, which I am thankful for.
Brakes Calipers, Rotors and Wheel Bearings have all gone at least once.
Wheels always seem to squeal no matter what I fix or where it gets fixed at.
U joints replaced twice.
Original Spark plugs lasted over 200000 KMs.
Tension pulley went at 190000 KM.
Driver window doesn’t roll down due to window motor breaking off.
Back window wiper motor broke right after I bought the vehicle.
Driver door hinge broke leaving.
All of which seems to be normal wear and tear. 225000 Kms later still smells brand new inside and the only problem is the Transmission slipping a bit.
I recommend this vehicle, but only if you install a good security alarm, some idiot wrecked my door handles trying to get in.
Planning to install new engine and tranny, make the vehicle run good for another 250000 KMs.
My friend has a 1999 GMC jimmy. Everytime she turns her turn signal on, her running lights turn off. IS this normal?

I have a 2000 gmc jimmy, I just bought this suv like two months ago. I saw the same thing happening, I have no idea if this is OK, but if you find out later if is OK. let me know. my e-mail is jmojardin@cochlaer.com. thanks.
Yes, it is normal for the running lights to go out when the turn signal is used. GMC says it is made that way to alert the oncoming traffic that you are turning.
I bought a used 1999 Jimmy 4-wheel drive 4-door a couple of years ago.
It has been interesting reading the owner's comments as they mirror my experience.
I have replaced brake pads (rotors) pretty well every year.
I have replaced driver's side door hinges once.
I need two front wheel bearings (tip in replacing bearings, cut torque specs in half).
I have replaced the alternator.
Other than these common complaints, it's been a good vehicle although very hard on gas (4.3 L auto) - I figure I'm getting about 7 K per litre (20 miles per gallon) whereas my wife's 1996 Chrysler Intrepid (3.8 L) is getting about 33 MPG.
I pull a 21 ft. travel trailer in the summer and I must say the Jimmy has done an admirable job (so far). It has a factory transmission cooler and towing package. It is also great in the snow (I live in Canada).
People have told me that I can expect transmission problems, front axle problems, etc. So far, so good. I don't mind spending a few dollars here and there - so much better than an new car payment. I rationalize it that way.
I have a a 2000 GMC Jimmy SLT with 145,000 Miles.
Replaced the alternator after 100,000.
Brake Pads and Rotors about once a year.
Lower Ball joints at 121,000.
Front Wheel Bearings at 135,000.
Upper Ball joints at 142,000.
New Hings Pins at 145,000.
My Gas Gauge does the same thing. I got a quote for around $400 to get it fixed since the sending unit is part of the fuel pump inside the gas tank. I decided to just fill up every 220 miles.
Has anyone noticed that the drain spout for the Windshield Wiper tray is directed above the hinges on both the driver
and passenger sides? This is why the hinges rust and fail eventually.
Today something in my transmission went. I can't get out second gear. Even when starting from a dead stop. I'm taking it in tonight.
We have a 99 GMC Jimmy and have about 110,000 miles on it. We have a broken gas gauge as well and monitor the mileage and also fill up at the 220 mile mark.
The headlights turn off when the signal is on. The owner's manual states it is correct to do this...
Too bad my honey didn't read ALL of the directions on towing a popup. We drove 4 hours in "overdrive" and drove home with the tow haul button pushed in... Drove fine the other day, but now the transmission feels like it is slipping. From what I have read, sounds like it may have been overheated pulling the 2000 lb popup in overdrive gear. The manual states to drive it in 3, not overdrive. Now it is sitting at AAMCO awaiting diagnostic testing and I am cringing... anticipating the outcome. The manual also says not to use the tow haul if not at 4000 lbs... or maybe I am not reading it correctly. Does anyone know if we should or shouldn't use the tow haul for 2000 pounds?
We have replaced the alternator on it, as it was not holding enough charge, as well as a sensor in the left front wheel. The upper and lower ball joints on both sides have also been replaced. The transmission caused problems 4 years ago, when I first bought it used, but the dealer fixed it for us. It was reving to 4000 rpms before it would go into drive and there was no reverse. That was at 48,000 miles. The parking/neutral switch was replaced. The left front hub bearing was replaced twice. Also replaced was the left front wheel speed harness... I don't have this memorized, just kept all of my receipts...
Anyway... kinda hard to get rid of a vehicle that you owe more on than it's worth, so we've just been plugging along and paying for the repairs... Call me crazy, but I really love my Jimmy... rides and drives great, when it's not in the shop ;)
I drive a 1999 Chevy Blazer (same thing) and I have also replaced my right front hub bearing, and my door hinges and bushings have gone bad. My back windshield washer no longer works. But other than that, I have had no problems at all.
I bought mine in 2000 when it had 13,000 miles on it, and it still runs great. I am 100% satisfied with my GM product and plan on buying another one in the near future. Not bad for a 7 year old vehicle with 120,000 miles on it.
I have 2000 GMC Jimmy.
I've had the same costly problems, most of them repeated in this forum (replacing the bearings, idler arm;, all those undercarriage problems..I've spent at least $3k on it already, in 2 years time.. bought this car 2 years ago..)
But I am most interested to read the first comment about the water pouring in onto the drivers side floor. Mine does too! A piece broke of my retractable sunroof, and it took a lot of effort to get it closed so that it appears to have a good seal, until I can get it fixed.. but still now, when it rains, especially pouring rain.. a waterfall comes in the drivers side and pools on the floor. It also drips in from the temperature gauge over the rearview mirror, and from the rear passenger light fixture! I had been thinking it was from the broken sunroof.. maybe the seal still wasn't good enough... but I also have to replace the drivers side door hinges; they're worn out (again!) and don't hold the door up so well anymore (second time I've had to replace those, in 2 years time), so I thought maybe the water was pouring in from that as well. : (
The speakers on my nice CD stereo don't work anymore.. probably thanks to the water pouring in.. and the heat doesn't work anymore (although the A/C still cranks beautifully.. even comes out when I don' have the A/C fan on. That should be real comfortable in the winter! LOL)
The weather stripping sucks. The sound of the wind coming through on the highway is unbelievable.
I have about another $3k in repairs to put into it right now.. but other than that.. it runs beautifully, and I can't help, but love my Jimmy. It's my baby, and other than the $$$$ @#$#@$#@ problems, it's the nicest truck I've ever had. The black leather seats, beautiful stereo system, and all in all, a great ride. The retractable sunroof is huge, and when I was able to use it, almost like having a convertible!
However, I do curse GMC for putting a vehicle out on the market, that seems to have these same flaws over and over again appearing in this model. They don't get off the hook that easy, and my language when I have to mop 3 inches of water up off my drivers side floor, isn't pretty.
I have a 1999 GMC Jimmy and will never own another GM product again. Oil lines replaced, tranny rebuilt, both before 95,000 miles. Loosing antifreeze into engine, they think head gasket, now engine light on and vehicle bucks. They said #4 cylinder misfire will have to replace injector at a hefty cost. Normal wear?? I don't think so. Piece of junk in my book and yes, I take care of my vehicles. I have not even mentioned the "smaller items" front end replaced, brakes always squealing, rear washer and blade not working, both seat handles broke off, should I go on. TOTAL LEMON!
I have had my 1999 Jimmy since brand new it was the best looking vehicle on the lot... since 110,000 kms ball joints failed and the left front wheel fell off, cha-ching $800...at 150000 kms the front end failed, cha-ching $1,400...at 200,000km, the air failed..$1390...cha-ching...the radiator is lsing fluid, but there are no outward signs of a leak... head gasket maybe?...now the key sometimes stays in the ignition of it's own free will... lock the doors and the battery runs down.. the recline handles have failed 4X...now I have $6.79 vice grips doing the job... I have replaced the alternator & the starter... BUT the Jimmy still LOOKS GOOOOOOD...
I have a 1999 Jimmy. Replace U joints at 55K and replaced the idlers arms, ball joints and wheel bearings multiple times. Looks like I am going to have to replace the alternator at 95K now and sounds like may need new wheel bearings again. Also, I am having an issue with the car stuttering when first started. No one has been able to repair it, but if I let it idle a while before putting it into drive it doesn't seem to be an issue. The main concern I have is that I have recently had to disconnect my radio since it was draining the battery and the squeaking and rattling in the car is driving me CRAZY!! Has anyone experience this rattling and squeaking issue and been able to remedy the situation?
