I have had my EF wagon for only a few months, as the actual owners are overseas. Since I've had it it's only just done the head gasket. They go at about 250 000 anyway, so I guess it was about time.
Apart from that the rest of the car is excellent. A very tough car. Parts are cheap. Good on fuel on long trips. Can't ask for anything better. :)
I have had 2 EF Falcons, a Series I and a Series II, and the only problems I have had are with the radiator and the head gasket. I over tightened the hoses and split the tank, and the head gasket was from driving with a split tank.
Awesome cars.
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone might have any advice on who could be wrong in my case?
3 months ago I had to have my EF wagon's head gasket done, then I noticed it was running rough again about 6 weeks ago.
Had to have new brakes put in, and was told the head gasket is leaking again, this was from a Kmart store.
Said the driving belt is getting a few small cracks in it, and will need replacing soon because of the oil on it.
Could the head gasket be on the way out again, or did the other mechanic I used not do their job right in the first place? I will not go back to the first place who did the work cause he replaced 2 parts for another problem that turned out to be not the car's problem at all, eg it wouldn't start 3 times and had to be towed one of those times.
They said it was the inhibitor switch, and then I think a coil or something, when it broke in Melbourne they said they will get an auto elect to look at it.
He said to me that if they had asked him first off (the other place isn't an auto elect) he would have told them it was the computer (without seeing the car, cause he does Ford work for them). $100 later the car was fine.
This place is a company that does services for pensioners where you pay like $7 a week and get 2 services a year. They get other work because they can arrange payments plans; they didn't do my head gasket, they sent it elsewhere to be repaired.
But $800 later, I'm upset that it was a shoddie job to begin with, or has it gone again?
How quick could it happen again? People just say the EF is known to have head gasket problems (only Ford haters seem to say this LOL). This car doesn't do a hell of a lot of driving, just about 10 kms a day around town or to the shops, and once a week 60 kms maybe, and once a month or so about 200 kms.
I love the car, but as a single parent it's killing me to try and find another $800 to repair it again. When I stop at lights for a long stop, the needle goes up to about the R in the word normal on the engine heat dash panel.
When it was going last time, it went in the red once and badly over heated, then I had it repaired.
When I'm driving the car is still fine sitting where the needle should be at the bottom.
At lights it idles really rough and jumps a lot, and it's very noticeable.
As you guessed, I am a female LOL who doesn't know too much about cars (only had a licence 3 and a half years, and never had to know about cars).
I have an EF lemon in the backyard. It's leaking water from one side of the head gasket and oil from the other. To fix this will be the 4th head gasket. I had the AU head bolts fitted for the last (3rd) head gasket replacement, still no good : (
It has only done 168,000km.
The coil packs and ignition leads have been replaced.
The air con packed it in around the 135,000km mark.
When it's running it's a nice car to drive. Has plenty of get up and go, although it likes to drink. Putting it on dual fuel eased the hip pocket woes.
The clear coating on the paint on the bonnet is peeling off all over.
Front discs replaced and need replacing again, brakes shudder and are really violent when traveling at 100km/h and suddenly need to stop. Car really shakes a lot.
The interior headlining is starting to fall off/down.
Alas it really is living up to Fixed Or Repaired Daily.
