I just bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport a month ago,
(I think I have the same problem with my Jeep as the first comment on this page) I was told that my problem of all Gages going to zero and then the airbag light coming on were caused by a connection that needed to be cleaned behind the speedo. If not, another unit from another Jeep with approx the same miles on the engine would have to be put in. This had happened to a wrangler not to long ago and the cleaning that takes 15 min worked. Let us hope that is what is wrong. Also I have had problems with chimes not working, brakes going early, tire ware, rattling in the handle for the 4x4. and other little things, such as lights not working. thank god all were taken care of by warranty. All in all my inline 6, 4x4, 4 door, green 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport has been my dream car. (I have noticed they should have made a bug guard standard on them)

I am having a similar problem, my 4WD light is not working. When I start my Jeep and it checks the gages all of them come on except the 4WD light. I pulled the cluster out and changed the light, but no fix. My 4WD works just not the light. Jeeps are awesome I have always owned one, but the TJ's and this electrical problem makes me want to get my old YJ back.
I have a 99 jeep wrangler sport. For some reason when I put on my left blinker and brake, the blinking stops and I'm not sure what happens on the outside. My boyfriend was following me and said my hazards came on and were flashing. It also only seems to happen when its hot outside. I was hoping someone could help me fix this. My boyfriend is very good with instructions (I don't know anything about vehicles, but love my jeep). I would be greatly appreciative for helpful advice. my e-mail is khabx50@sbcglobal.net.
I have a 97 jeep wrangler that has been having some electrical malfunctions. This is the third time that I am working on it. The second time around I replaced the battery, cables, wires etc.. anything that was coming to or going away from the battery. It worked great for 5 months. I came home one Friday night about 2 weeks ago and it did not start the next morning. My brother came down this week to Dallas to help me with it. After a lot of digging around and tracing wires... we found out that the security alarm that was installed... by either the previous owner or factory... looked more like previous owner to tell you the truth. anyway we removed the alarm system. When the alarm was installed they had spliced the ignition wire and redirected one to the alarm and then returned to the other spliced wire. As I said we removed the alarm and redirected the spliced wires to their original wires and the dang thing started right up. I don't know if any of you have alarms installed, but this was the cause of my electrical problems... I hope this helps.
Bought my '99 Sahara new. At only 200 miles, lost all gauges as described aboved. Dealer was aware of tech bulletin addressing the Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) connector needing to be replaced all together. Took the Jeep in and had it "fixed" per the tech bulletin. Problem has resurfaced in 2004. Called dealer back to let them know that they didn't "FIX" the problem. When the dealer looked at the computer records, he found that the connector had only been reworked (NOT replaced). I let them know that this is not a wear and tear item and they should complete the job they started 5 years ago. I got a call back from the service manager and he agreed to do it right this time... at no charge. Hats off to him.
Please lean on your dealerships about this one as there is a tech bulletin out there adressing this exact issue. Wish I knew the number.
BTW...my plastic radiator sprung a leak after about 4 years. If you should spring a leak around the top part of your OEM radiator, I would advise replacing the whole radiator with an aftermarket radiator made completely of metal. They can be repaired.
I have a 1997 wrangler. When the humidity is high (mostly in the mornings or during rainshowers), my left turn signal comes on when I hit the brakes. It doesn't flash, but rather stays on.
This morning I jump in the jeep and take off and now it is trying to stall out on me. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires to no avail. I truly love my jeep, but I am growing increasingly impatient with these annoying electrical issues.
I also have a 97 wrangler and it is sputtering on me when I hit bumps and when I drive over 85mph I put a new coil, plugs, rotor, wires and cap on and nothing helps. I think I will have to take it in to the shop to find out why it is going bad. if you have any ideas call me on my cell at 616-405-3593

I think it is your crank sensor most the time at higher revs this problem will happen when they start to go bad.
I have a Jeep Wrangler 2004 model, and ever so often the electrical system shuts right off... even the engine.
You can be driving along and hit some small bumps in the road and the radio, dashboard, lights and engine would turn off. The automatic transmission jumps out of gear and you can rev the engine in this so called neutral then after about 5 seconds it all starts back up and you can continue driving. This is really scary when you on the highway and a truck is tailgating you and the engine shuts off into neutral!!
Any ideas??

OK, I will start by saying I have owned five generations of Jeeps. I just purchased my 5th as a matter of fact. It's a 1997 TJ Sport. My turn signals had the problems everyone her was describing. You can fix the problem yourself. I will explain step by step.
1. take the three screws out that hold the steering column trim together.
2. There are three t-25 screws that has to be taken out of the metal holding clamp.
3. unplug the wiring harness that goes into the back of the multi function switch (brights, turn signal and flasher)
4. pull it out and take the 4 screws out of the housing.
5. being very careful to take it apart as some pieces might fall out.
6. clean all the lithium grease off of the brass terminal and sand down all the contact points.
7. put it back together and test it out.
The problem is that the lithium grease Chrysler uses get very dirty and conducts electricity to more than one point inside and cause all kinds of crazy problems with the turn signals. The same problem with the connectors on the back of the Gauge cluster. They use lithium grease and when the moisture cause its to corrode and connections get messed up. I have figured out everything, but the horn. I can't get it to work. I have replaced the relay and everything else. Still no horn. Hopefully this helped you guys and good luck!
Interestingly enough, I’ve experienced many of these same electrical problems with my 1997 Jeep Wrangler. I purchased it new in 1997, and still own it today (garage kept at all times). I’ve gotten used to the intermittent gauge outages, no one seems to know how to correct the problem. The suggestion to clean the cluster connector pins and giving a slight bend to them seems to make sense…I’ll try it. I have however lost power to the radio (factory). Fuses appear good…any chance this could be related to these electrical glitches?
It's 7:00 PM cold and raining. I just went out to my 99 wrangler and experienced the same problems listed above. No power to interior cabin, instrument cluster, etc and won't start. Nothing works. I had tried turning the interior lights on and I guess I left the knob in the on position. As I was sitting contemplating what to do next the inside lights ever so slowly started to come on then faded back out. It still won't start. I like the suggestion above, cleaning the grease out and will try it, if I ever get home.
I have read all the comments and I too have a 1997 TJ sport and live in Dubai (Middle East). I went on annual leave after dropping it off to have the Powertrain Control Module checked to see if they could shape the output to give me extra down low torque. While putting on my new soft top gear I noticed the dome lamp not working and radio U/S. I've got the diagrams and am a trained engineer, but this one gave me the willies, checking fuses and pulling out the cluster revealed nothing strange. There seems to be no logical connection and the next thing on my list is to see if I can beg/borrow cluster or Powertrain Control Module to find out if either of these items is giving me bother. Seems there is a common problem with many Jeep owners.
Yes I too have electrical issues with my 2001 jeep wrangler. The factory fog lights are on the turn indicator switch. First the lights would not shut off then they stopped working all together. Replaced the relay with no effect. All this happened when still under warranty didn't get around to taking it in to dealer as it a pain in the asset. Any ideas?
