Well, I read your input! Not only that, I found it informative, useful and one of the better constructed entries as regards problem, followed by cause, followed by solution. I hope you've either sorted the remainder of your nightmare by now - or got a nice reliable alternative vehicle instead!! Thanks again. Good luck. Geoff.

I own a Polo, was my boyfriend's advice :(

I wish I didn't listen!

Hi all.

Seems like these Polos do have a lot of electronic issues. My wife bought one, a Polo 1.4 Trendline, which also had the power steering light coming on, on the dash, after a mechanic looked at it and told me to replace the power steering pump. A very costly component for such a small car.

So I did some investigation and found a blown fuse (power supply to electric power steering). Located on top of the battery, there is a set of 3 flip over covers with different thickness red wires. The one on the far right has a fuse that looks like a bolt on plate with 2 nuts; that's the fuse. Replaced it with a 40A fuse, and the light went off on the dash, and the power steering is working again.

My suspicion is maybe a weak fuse, or a wire rubbing through the insulation, touching the body somewhere. I recommend replacing the fuse, give the wiring a shake or 2 and see if the fuse blows again. Also what I suspect is that when the steering wheel is turned extremely left or right, in the position where it stops and cannot turn any more, there is an extra electrical load on the pump motor, and that causes stress on the fuse, and if it is a bad fuse, it will blow.

I hope this saves you a trip to the garage, and a hole in your wallet...
