1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Very quick and comfortable

Faults:

I have just got a Peugeot 106 GTi and there seems to be an electrical fault or engine problem, as when the revs go low or I stop the car, it cuts out. After it has cut out, I switch the car back on and the rev counter flickers (goes up and down). And I have a problem with the speedo as when I switch my headlights on, it doesn't work!

If anyone could help me solve this problem I would be really grateful. Thanks.

I really like the car. It is quick and the exhaust sounds nice, nice interior and exterior, nice car to modify.

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 16v original imp. Italy from Croatia

Summary:

Great little rocket with supreme handling

Faults:

General service done at 145000 km. Every belt, alternator, water pump, fluid changed...

Back pipe rusted at 160000 km.

General Comments:

This car is the best one I drove regarding the handling.

Steering wheel gives you everything you need to know about the road.

Will easily bring you out from the curve with minimum adjustment if you get in too quick.

My gearbox messed up on 86,000 miles.

Had a new clutch.

New catalyst.

Head gasket went; now under repair.

General Comments:

This car is mint to drive; it handles well and grips to the road well, but is slow until you get over 4000rpm, and then it really shows itself.

It stops mint too.

1998 Peugeot 106 XRD 1.5 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very cheap car to run if you service it

Faults:

Immobiliser locked me out when trying to change the number.

Clutch cable snapped.

Rear axle needed replacing.

New exhaust at MOT near 100000 miles.

Possible new engine mounts required.

General Comments:

Bought this as a cheap work vehicle, and I must say it is very economical to run. Last checked the mpg at 64 mpg.

Thrashed in for a commute of 42 miles a day for a year, and it never bothered it. Returns good mpg however its driven.

Handles well and performance similar to maybe a 1.2 petrol; difficult to compare however as it has a lot of torque, will pull uphill as easy as on the flat; it's not a car you can run forever with out maintenance.

It's has some fairly major work done; most recently the rear axle, which is common to most Peugeots and Citroens; the wheels start leaning in.

Other than that, it's a good second hack, always starts on the button, just build quality a bit poor.

The heated windows are problematic, as are the electrics, but plenty in scrap yards to get complete bits from.

1998 Peugeot 106 XLD 1.5 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap economical car

Faults:

Alternator belt cracking and needs replacing.

Idler wheel for alternator belt needs replacing, due to driving through flood water.

Windscreen replaced.

Passenger side wing mirror replaced - driving too close to a tree.

General Comments:

Bought the vehicle from a gentleman who had only done 40,000 miles in 7 years, and now the car is doing an expected 50,000 a year and doing it well.

The 1.5 engine is very economical - I've pulled over 650 miles from the small 45 litre tank in the past.

The engine still delivers high mpg when driving fast, and the car will happily sit at 85/90 on the motorway, although it does take a while to get there.

Some steep hills cause it to slow down, mainly hills with a gradient greater than 10%.

The vehicle is over due for servicing and cam belt change, but still starts first time, and only ever smokes a bit on very cold mornings.

My old car was a Citroen AX with the same TUD engine, which performed just as well - slightly quicker, but the AX is a lighter car.

The only problem I had with the AX engine was the glow plugs going.

My 106 has just sailed through MOT with no advisories.

The interior is nothing fancy, and everything is where it should be, and considering the motorway mileage I do in the car, it's very comfortable.

Overall, a cheap car to run, and parts appear cheap.

Everything in the engine bay is relatively easy to access, except fuel filter and washer bottle.

Interior good, excellent speakers and seats comfortable.

Diesel turbo availability would have been a nice option.
