1997 Chevrolet Blazer LT 4x4 review from North America
"Screw gas mileage. I wanna have fun!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Fuel Pump (bought it with this)
Upper Ball Joints
Rear Differential
Both front C.V. axles (same time: ()
Power mirrors quit working
Passenger seat recliner handle broke off
Oil remote lines leaking quite a bit (common)
Engine seems to struggle starting some times like it's lost it's prime and the pump needs to catch up. I just replaced this with an o.e.m unit. : (
WAY WAY WAY too many squeaks inside. I know it's got high miles, but my ranger had 185,000 on it and my previous s-10 had 172,000 on it and neither of them squeaked like this. Must be part of the LT option :)
General comments?
I love the brakes! Finally GM did well with 4 wheel disc and dual piston front calipers! Looks are acceptable. I really wanted to get back in a chevy and found a good deal on this. I knew it needed a fuel pump when I bought it. It didn't run. Non runners are much cheaper :) I knew who owned this and knew it had been well taken care of so I made an offer and she accepted. I sold my truck bought a fuel pump, replaced it and I was off. Sadly getting it running was the start of problems. I'm not bashing chevy here. I've been and am a die hard bow tie fan, but this vehical has just made it no fun for me to drive and what's the point of owning something if you don't like it. Gas mileage is only second to driving pleasure!
The problems started with the fuel pump. Third times a charm right. The pump itself was fine, it was the seal that was the problem. Even the dealership struggled getting me the right seal. Why they made so many different styles... I don't know. Next was the A.C. It's stopped working. No biggy. Bought some new seals to replace leak. E-vaced and recharged. A.C. works, but now compressor knocks and pings. And yes I added 6oz. of new oil. I guess 125,000 of life out of a compressor is acceptable. Then the stupid things started happening. Rear end went out. GM limmited slip
diff clutch packs fell apart and bound the rear end up. Reparing it wasn't the problem, it was the cost. The dealership wanted 500 bucks just for replacement packs. WHAT?? I utilized ebay and suffered with it on jack stands for two weeks. When I was underneath I replaced rear shocks rear brakes (pads and rotors) and added a set of 1 1/2" add a leafs to correct the reverse arch starting in the original leafs. Once it was back on wheels I made the maiden voyage from TN to MI. All went well untill indinapolis. I felt a vibration starting and then a loud clunking and popping. I thought my years of schooling, wrenching, and certifications had failed me and the rear end was going out again...nope. 472 dollars later the front end was fixed. The c.v.axles were actually thrown out of the vehical and they snapped the upper ball joints on their departure:) I'm not trashing the vehical and I'm not mad now, I simply have hard feeling towards it. It let me down. So I'm selling it. I know I'll loose money on it, but like I said... driving pleasure. between the fuel pump, relay, a.c., rear end, front end, tires, dual exsaust and rims I've invested 3,500 dollars. This doesn't include the 3,500 I paid for it. I'll sell it for 4,000. It won't fall apart now. It's fixed. I want something with more power, room, and response. I'm gonna try a dodge this time. Who knows, maybe i'll like it. My blazer only averaged 17 mpg anyway. Might as well have fun with 15 mpg. It's only another arm and leg for the extra fuel.
