2002 Nissan Maxima GXE review from North America

"Reliable, powerful sedan, 120K and going strong"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine sensor recalled and replaced @ 58,000 miles.

General comments?

We "upgraded" from driving Honda Accords and have been extremely pleased with the Maxima power and handling. My husband is 6' 3" and 240 lbs and we found this car is the most comfortable (longer seats for leg support) compared to the Camry which we looked at as well. The quick acceleration adds safety on interstate driving when passing slower cars or when cutting into traffic from an on ramp is necessary. The cabin noise depends on the tires, but is generally much quieter than our 93' Accord. I got the 16" tires on the Maxima b/c they are cheaper to replace. We've driven the Maxima 120K so far with *no* major engine issues. This car also has cheaper maintenance for long term ownership since there is a timing chain instead of a timing belt like the Accord which has to be replaced every 80K. We have changed the oil every 3- 4, 000 miles and per manufacturer's recommendations: at 93K changed the transmission pan gasket, compressor and power steering belts. New battery at 101K. Serviced the A/C & antifreeze at 101K also. We have been pleased with the reliability and the looks. I noticed there are not a lot of comments on the 2002 Maxima and I am guessing that folks don't take the time to write a review when they are not having any problems with the model. I believe it was the last model made in Japan. I hope we will be able to drive this car for at least another 100,000 miles.
