1997 Nissan Primera SE 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Absolute heap of junk !

Faults:

- Severe rattling from the dashboard - Nissan dealer could not fix it with 3 visits, fixed by myself.

- Fuel system recall by Nissan.

- Faulty alternator.

- Noisy steering on full lock.

- Shattered 5th gear cog, gearbox rebuild.

- Problems with the handbrake releasing.

- Driver's seat mountings are loose.

- Air conditioning smells 'like urine' when turned off.

- Severe knocking noise from the front suspension, happens every 15,000 miles after links replaced at £250 a time. This is not acceptable unlike what Nissan say.

General Comments:

A potentially good car has been let down by poor quality parts and workmanship - my series one that was made in Japan was perfect but the British cannot make a decent car these days, where the newer ones are built..

The suspension problems and dealer failure to notice a loud cracking sound. Even suggested that the dealer technician gets a hearind aid! (Dealer was Evans-Halshaw of Reading - avoid this dealer!) It is obviously a design flaw which shows that Nissan didn't test their prototypes properly.

Buy German !!!

If you're spending this sort of money, buy a Passat or an A4 - I'm going to!

I agree with what you say. Nissans that are made now in England are nowhere near as good as the old Nissans and Datsuns made in Japan. England just doesn't seem able to make a decent car.

Absolutely, I used love Datsuns and Nissans but I bought a 1999 Primera and it's piece of junk. I rather drive a 1978 Datsun Laurel.

1997 Nissan Primera SLX 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Technically a good car but it doesn't feel as good as it should

Faults:

Rattle from the dash.

Wing mirror cracked one week after purchase in freezing weather.

Vibration on steering.

General Comments:

A reliable car.

Quite fast but it is better for fast cruising than low speed acceleration due to the wide gear spacing on lower gears.

Very hard suspension which is good for handling but not so good on bumpy roads and over speed humps.

Seats could be more comfortable.

Good equipment spec.

I think this would be a good car to buy secondhand particularly if you like to drive fast. It seems to compare well against other cars of the same price, but I never liked it.

1997 Nissan Primera Si 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A sporty badge for a non sporty car

General Comments:

Too slow, would prefer my next car to be an SRI for the extra power.

1997 Nissan Primera GX 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Knocks the spots off a Mondeo!

Faults:

Radio cassette replaced under 3 year warranty. Various trim noises from dashboard. Sometimes difficult to select reverse gear, and third gear crunches when selected from cold.

General Comments:

Generally a very well put together car. Economical on fuel, never drops below 35mpg. Very free revving engine, and excellent handling, a much better car than the Mondeo it has replaced!!

1997 Nissan Primera GT 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great car (Not recommended for 'boy racers')

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

A few rattles, but considering the reliability of the car these are insignificant.

A wolf in sheep's clothing, drives well around town, but reach the magic 3,700 RPM & Whooooooosh..........

I cannot recommend the Nissan dealer in Guildford though.... Bad bad attitude towards aftersales service!!!!!

1997 Nissan Primera GT 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

30,000 miles (16,000 by me).

Nothing.

General Comments:

Quick, very quick, holds the road well, good supportive seats, 5 door has lots of space for 'the kitchen sink', comfortable, but bland.

The mirror plastic housing vibrates ANNOYINGLY as does something else in the front console but it never does it when I am looking for it!!

Faults:

Fuel tank vapour leak recall.

Squeaking wiper blade arm (Needed bearing lube).

Fuel gauge failure.

General Comments:

Generally a good car but spoilt by irritating minor problems and disinterested dealer response.

1997 Nissan Primera GX Plus 2.0 from Croatia

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

This is the 14th Nissan in my family now. Also my 4th Primera-Bluebird.

These are great cars and if they can run on the Croatian roads then they can run anywhere. I dream about the 2.0GT or if I get lucky (win a Lotto) then a Skyline!

1997 Nissan Primera Si 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing so far.

Petrol tank replaced on recall.

General Comments:

Handling is brilliant.

Next time I'd buy the SRi to get a 2 litre engine to do it justice.

Handles at least as well as any other car I've had including 309GTi.
