1987 Volvo 240 240DL review from North America

"More reliable and forgiving than your parents"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Seat warmers stopped working after 12 years or so.

Replaced spark plug wires at about 150,000 (that was the only time)

Some freaky noise coming from the rear end after about 200,000. No one could give me a for sure answer on what it was, but nothing ever came of it.

Replaced Catalytic Converter after about 210,000.

Bottom of car began to rust out behind the passenger side seat after about 217,000 miles.

General comments?

We bought this car from Canada in 1987. I don't know for sure how many miles it has on it because there was about 6000Km on it before they switched the odometer over to English units then reset it to 0. Also, the odometer and speedometer didn't like to work when it was cold, and since I live in Minnesota that was quite often.

This car was a total tank. My mom backed into a cement pole one time so hard that her hair clip got knocked out of her hair, but not a dent was done to the car.

I got rear-ended at a stop light and the back bumper fell off, but that was the only damage done to the vehicle!

My brother rear-ended a guy and all the repairs we did with a hammer and some wire. Not even the radiator took a hit!

My friends loved this car, we would take it everywhere. When my brother had it in high school, it was the vehicle of choice for the hockey team.

Sadly, it met its demise when my brother was T-boned by an old man going about 30MPH. He was hit directly in the driver's door. He got out of the car and walked away 100% unharmed (he played hockey that night).

These cars must run forever unless smashed to bits, then run over repeatedly.
