1999 Toyota Celica GT review from North America

"Low to no repairs, but expensive and terrible service at dealership during regular maintenance visit"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine burns oil more than the average car. I change my oil every 3000 miles. Unfortunately, the oil level is very low (almost empty) by 2800 miles. It is sometimes necessary for me to add a quart.

When I use the hatchback release lever, the latch does not fully release. It is necessary for me to lift my hatchback at the same time I turn my key.

The gas cover release lever malfunctioned once. The mechanic informed me that it was due to the metal line connecting the the lever to the gas tank cover 'unhooking'.

Brake rotors and caliper rust.

There is also a rattling sound coming from the interior. The specific location is difficult to pin point. It is generally coming from behind or around the glove box, but not the glove box itself.

Rust is forming inside my rear view mirror.

Though a well made and reliable vehicle,

the $25,000 price tag is a little high for the features offered.

General comments?

The vehicle's performance is excellent. Handling is exceptional especially when turning. The engine's straight line power is unfortunately low at 130hp in California and 135hp outside California. I definitely feel the engine is reliable.

Ironically, the few times I need assistance at a Toyota dealership for minor repairs or regular maintenance, the service was sub par. They were not rude, but I felt they were only providing the most minimal service required.

Ergonomically, the interior is perfect. The seats are the most comfortable ones I have ever sat in. The radio, AC/heater are exactly at arms reach. And the tachometer, speedometer, and other dials can easily be seen through the steering wheel. All the controls in the car are intuitive and conveniently located. With one exception: the cup holders in the center console. Cups placed in this area conflict with the stick shift a few inches away.
