1996 Dodge Intrepid Standard review from North America
"Reliable, has little issues, good car for college kid"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Inner tie rod bushings have to be replaced frequently and have been known to cause steering malfunctions.
Sway bars were replaced because of clunking noise they created
AC coil needed to be replaced because of poor cooling
I bought the car with warped rotors. Didn't feel really bad when I first had used it, but over time if felt like an ABS system was kicking in.
General comments?
I have read a lot of reviews about my car and find in interesting that there is such a disparity between owners. I personally have not had that many problems with my car. It now has over 124,000 miles and I plan on driving it until it dies. I am the third owner of the vehicle. The first owner I did not know. The second owner was my dad and now I have owned the vehicle for the last 4 years. I am not entirely sold on the intrepid with so many good cars out there to choose from, but I will say that it has been a reliable car. I have only had to do routine maintenance i.e. oil change, replace the air filter, etc. Otherwise I have not babied the car in any way. In fact I probably work the car very hard. I drive 80 miles a day to work. It is all expressway. I have had to replace the tires twice since I have had it and the brakes and rotors once. The car did have an extended warranty when I purchased that car from my dad. It paid for itself with the replacement of the inner tie rod bushings. These are a pain and I have read they have to be replaced every 4 years. That is about right in my assessment since they have been replaced twice since I have owned the car. Other that that I really have no complaints. It runs smooth and reliably. I am starting to have a small electrical problem I think because the radio LCD won't come on to show the time and sometimes all the doors won't unlock. These are not things that you can't live with. However if you are a perfectionist and like everything in your car to work perfectly for its entire life don't buy this car.
