1995 Ford Taurus SE review from North America
"Nightmare on wheels"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The left head gasket went bad, (driver's side) 17,800 miles.
The transmission started to quiver if I stomped on it in first gear. 20,000 miles.
The transmission then would shake no matter what gear it was in and how hard I pushed the gas. 23,000 miles.
Then it completely gave up around 24,000 miles.
Then (after I personally replaced the tranny) the fuel pump died. 23 miles later.
After I replaced that, the oil pump stopped and therefore, no oil pressure was building up in the engine.
After I replaced that I posted the car for sale.
But on the way home from posting the ad at the newspaper office, the entire electrical system went dead and I was stranded for a few hours. It was the battery which literally just decided to stop producing current.
After I replaced the battery and got home, a person called about the car the next day. I offered to drive the car out to him, but it didn't make it. One of the spark plugs cracked and dropped a little piece of ceramic junk into the cylinder which then got stuck in a valve and snapped it off in a few short miles. So I figured it was destiny that I couldn't sell this car.
I had no more problems (after spending $1500 on the engine) until I tried selling it again. 1 1/2 years later. This time the transmission was acting up by shifting erratically. about 38,000 miles.
I finally agreed to let it go for $400.
General comments?
This car could be an absolute joy to drive one minute, and then a nightmare the next.
The ride was so comfortable, but the reliablity was anything, but pleasing.
If this car was reliable, I would consider this the best car made, but since it's not, then I can't say much for it.
