1993 Ford Explorer Limited review from North America
"A great, reliable, luxury SUV"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I had to have the front ball joints replaced at 153,000, along with other front end parts, cost around $850.
The Air Compressor went up at 169,000. Had to get almost the whole A/C system replaced. I converted it from R-12 to T-134 since the system was being replaced. It cost around $600.
The original radius arm bushings lasted me 170,000, which is very good from what I hear. It was around $125 to get both replaced.
The rear bass sub-woofer went up in the winter of 04. Spent $95 to get a new factory sub-woofer.
Just put new pads and rotors on the front brakes along with drums for the rear, but this is regular maintenance and cost around $300.
Leather Seats wear badly, but for a 12 year old car what do you expect.
The car is a gas hog, roughly 16 to 17 to the gallon on a regular basis.
General comments?
I love my Ford Explorer, it is one of the best vehicles that I have ever driven. The car is a total workhorse. It has 172,000 and it is still running like brand new. I have pushed this car very hard and everything I throw at it does not seem to phase it, it is a great SUV. The car has had few problems, other than the normal parts that wear out, and the Limited package that Ford came out with in the Explorer is awesome.
The 4.0 V6 that they put in the Explorers is a very good and reliable motor. I know somebody who put 375,000 miles on his 93 Explorer and all he had to do to the engine was the normal maintenance, and it was still running strong when he sold it. The only draw back is that it needs a little more horsepower because it does not have much get up and go, but overall I love the 4.0 V6.
If you are a big guy like me, the SUV has a lot of room. It has the biggest seats that I have sat in and I am very comfortable in it.
