1996 Renault Megane Coupe review from UK and Ireland
"Stylish looking and cheap to run (so far)!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The rear demister is very intermittent.
The key fob suddenly fell out of sync with the car. This left me stranded as I had to un-lock the doors manually which set the alarm off and it was immobilised. The battery had to be disconnected and the car towed to a Renault dealer. The dealer said the key fob was broken and that I would have to wait weeks for 2 special order replacement key fobs that had to be manufactured in France at a cost of over £200! The RAC guy checked with a machine that the key was still sending a signal - knowing it was I insisted that Renault try and re-code the key to the car. This worked and cost me £30 to re-code the key. I drove the car home and to date it has never been a problem.
General wear and tear issues such as new catalytic converter at 70000 miles.
The centre rear centre console catch has broken so it keeps springing open. I have had to glue it down.
The paintwork lacquer seems to be peeling off especially around the doors.
General comments?
This car is starting to look a bit dated, however it is still stylish, and is very quick - especially in the lower gears.
The interior is very comfortable, but very basic - it doesn't even have electric windows.
