1997 Mitsubishi Legnum st gdi 1.8

Summary:

This one was crap

Faults:

Torque convertor in auto transmission. This is a common problem. $1000 to fix.

Blown head, needed total rebuild. $2500.

General Comments:

Terrible example of a car. maybe I just got the worst one.

However very economical, and a bit peppy. a good looking wagon.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

Have the same except manual. Nothing but problems, the most UN-reliable car I have ever owned. Gearbox, hydraulics associated with clutch, Lifters, even the clock on the dash. Is economical to run as long as you don't take into account the breakdowns. Currently about 140K.

Hi there, my Legnum 1800 Tiptronic I bought at 98,000kms, has now done 184,000kms, and has given me no problems mechanically at all. She's been sweet, but what's not so sweet is the power.

Last of all the 1800 is more reliable than the V6 twin turbo. The turbos crap out on them, smoke like hell, and the tiptronic 5 trans loses its reverse and drive gears, as the Diamantes have the same problem.

The 1800 too has a crap box, but my trans has given no trouble at all.

Apart from that, they are mean wagons and are a hundred times more reliable than the crappy car called a Subaru.

Cheers to all that own a Mitsubishi Legnum. Legnums go hard; love them to bits.

1996 Mitsubishi Legnum 25ST 2.5L V6 petrol

Summary:

Great power and practicality for a family wagon

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong as it has been serviced every 6 months, thus extending its life. Needed a new thermostat and recently new brake pads.

General Comments:

This car has a fantastic amount of room - I have shifted timber, freezers and furniture in it.

For a 2.5L V6 it accelerates very well, but could do with a suspension upgrade to improve handling and perhaps better brakes if your budget allows.

Interior is tasteful and practical.

Exterior looks good, but the factory alloys need to be changed to really set it off.

My car is red, but beware of this color oxidizing (as mine has begun to).

1999 Mitsubishi Legnum 24 GDI 2.4 petrol

Summary:

Heavy tank of average reliability and poor perfomance

Faults:

-Car shudders at intermittent periods, usually at 60-80km/h

-Air con not working when purchased (but fixed myself at later date)

General Comments:

The only real positives for this car is the decent boot space, corner handling, and exterior looks, however this is where the good points end.

The fuel economy was abysmal, I'm not going to do the maths, but a 60ltr tank got me about 300ks. This may not have been a problem if this car was a rocket ship, but it was not. Either I had a dud car or the 2.4ltr engine is just not up to pulling a reasonably large vehicle with 4WD around, as it was slower than most 1.6ltr engined vehicles I have driven.

The shudder which developed in the rear of the car at low speeds was a concern and the main reason I disposed of the car, it sounded like it was either some sort of 4WD failure or automatic transmission issue, regardless it would have been expensive to fix.

The steering was also reasonably heavy.

Bought a Turbo Airtrek as a replacement which uses less gas and is 3 times as fast. Don't buy a Legnum unless its offered to you dirt cheap.

You obviously didn't shop around and TEST DRIVE before buying your Legnum.

I've got the 2.5 V6 model and It's very quick off the mark and performs well with heaps of grunt.

But what about the fuel economy of your 2.5 v6 version? Is it the twin turbo model? Probably still abysmal fuel economy if that's the case.
