2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5L

Summary:

Not a good investment

Faults:

Since shortly after I got this car, there have been consistent problems with various features. From reading past reviews, this seems to be the same problems that other owners have reported.

The electrical system had to be replaced, different things such as door locks, headlights and other features would be sporadically non-operable.

The truck latch regularly failed to engage.

At 62k miles, the transmission started showing a Powertrain failure going up one hill. I barely made it home on a rainy night when this happened.

I am still waiting, after 2 weeks, to get a response from Jaguar, as to whether they will replace, or partially bear the cost of replacing the transmission.

General Comments:

Beautiful car, but not worth the hassles.

Investment? What car is?

2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 std 3.0

Summary:

A high performance bargain.

Faults:

Windshield air vents replaced under warranty.

Drivers seat leather skin replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

This car handles really well especially the acceleration.

Seats are comfortable.

Taking a little while to get used to the gear changes through 2nd and 3rd gears.

Great gas mileage for a car so sporty.

I have had no problems with this car and I really enjoy driving it. The car has an appropriate size trunk and enough room for two in the back for a car of this size.

My dealer is superb and ensures that I am well satisfied with the car.

2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5 2.5L

Summary:

A bargain luxury car. Can't find another like it in its class, well, at least not for the same $

Faults:

Broke rear axle while trying to "peel out." I should have known better.

Rear passenger window regulator went out at 30000 miles.

Rear right-side shock needs replacement.

Constant squeaking in cabin. Can't figure it out.

Brake light began to come on and off at about 42000 miles.

Gas mileage per gallon dropped noticeably at around 6000 miles.

Leather surrounding gear shift began to wear and tear at around 10000 miles.

Manual tranny isn't very smooth.

General Comments:

Even with all of the problems, I have become very satisfied with this car. I've put close to 50000 miles on it in about two years and haven't had any performance problems.

The manual tranny is definitely faster than the automatic.

This car would be a great buy if bought at its original MSRP ($31,000). All I had to add to it was a CD changer. If you had spent any more on this car, then you probably just wasted your money.

2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 Litre

Summary:

Fun to test drive, a nightmare to own

Faults:

First off, I experienced difficulty with the trunk latch. Although I discovered later that this was a well-known issue with Jaguar, the dealership's service representative treated me as if I were nuts, then told me that there was probably nothing wrong with the car, but he'd go out of his way to check it anyway. After 3 trips to the dealer, the trunk latch was finally replaced with a working version.

About 8,000 miles later, the electrical system started going haywire. The vehicle was in the dealership for a week waiting for a part before they took a new central electrical unit from another car to repair mine. Availability of parts was a constant problem.

The grab handle inside the vehicle's rear passenger side inexplicably fell off at one point.

The most dangerous issue I experienced had to do with the transmission. At about 19,000 miles, the car stopped downshifting when accelerating up a hill. I called the dealership to schedule service the following business day. I asked if it was safe to drive the car, they said Yes. They were wrong. The automatic transmission failed almost completely. Thank goodness I could manually shift with the j-shift. At 18 months old, the entire transmission was replaced.

I just got rid of the vehicle and I could not be happier. The workmanship was so poor I had legitimate concerns about my safety and my family's safety.

General Comments:

This car was a blast to drive. Great acceleration and handling.

The ventilation in the backseat was poor.

I've had similar problems, I also traded mine in and took a hammering on the trade price. Replaced with a Lexus GS300, have done 37,000km without a single incident.
