2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 CYC

Summary:

Electrical problems are a headache

Faults:

When I turn on the lights and press my brake the tail lights go out. But if I don't turn on the lights and press the brake they light up. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the fix? The lights appear to be getting the proper 12V required and the ground seems fine.

Also the jeep has power door locks and when I press the lock/unlock it makes a horrible growling sound and some of the doors will not lock/unlock and my drivers door locked me in several times and you cannot unlock it with the key or from the inside.

I have not had any of those problems mentioned, but I do have a problem with the driver's side power window. It got stuck a month after I purchased it and the dealer supposedly replaced the motor, but at 36,00 miles it broke again. Otherwise I am satisfied with my vehicle.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 V6

Summary:

Stylish, but not worth $30k

Faults:

The rotor problem. My steering wheel started shaking after 10k miles, fixed it at 13k miles.

It started shaking again at 18k miles, so I went to the dealer a week ago.

Thanks to www.carsurvey.org, I came to know that the rotor is like a known problem for Grand Cherokee Laredo, so I complained about this problem at the dealer, and they just replaced 2 front rotors under the warranty.

Last time I fixed the rotor, it was not covered by warranty, since the brake warranty ends at 12k miles, but this time they fixed it under warranty.

Sounds weird, huh? I guess they don't want to admit the problem and process an official recall service.

So... Grand Cherokee owners, go to your dealer and complain! Then they'll replace your rotors.

General Comments:

Other than the rotor, I had several small problems with this car.

Those small problems are very annoying sometimes...

I would not recommend this car to anybody...

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 V8

Summary:

A true let down on reliability

Faults:

At 18,000 miles, the automatic transmission started growling between 2-3, and 3-4 up-shifts. I took the Jeep to the dealer and they said it was "normal". I was sure it wasn't and called the Jeep Home Office. They recommended I go back to the dealership and demand a second look. The mechanic found a broken accumulator spring preventing full engagement of the clutches. He replaced it and corrected the problem.

At 18,700 miles, the a/c wasn't blowing cold. The dealership diagnosed a leaking condenser and replaced it.

At 19,000 miles, the left and right front Infinity speakers started to buzz, the dealer replaced them.

At 19,200 miles, the left front power lock started to grind, the dealer replaced it.

General Comments:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is beautifully styled and appointed. I wish it was more reliable.

The Jeep has more than enough power with the 4.7 V-8.

The Jeep has a great ride on the highway, but is a little choppy around town.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L

Summary:

Not worth buying at any price

Faults:

After six months, my "original" Grand Cherokee was replaced by Daimler-Chrysler Canada due to "incorrect paint process" with a new one.

The "replacement" vehicle has been a nightmare. Where do I start?

At 5200 km a wheel alignment was required due to severe tire feather edging.

At 12000 km the front axle bushings were replaced.

At 13700 km the front brake rotors were replaced due to pulsation.

At 18800 km the electrical recall 882 was performed.

At 23500 km all 4 light alloy wheels were replaced due to corrosion.

At 27800 km the front brake rotors were replaced for the 2nd time; the sway bar bushings were replaced; the transmission valve body was repaired due to harsh shifting; the leather on the steering wheel was coming off and required a new wheel; a water leak at the driver' side floor was repaired.

At 30200 km the engine started to "ping" under load and no solution was given by the dealer.

At 37200 km the front differential bearings and the front drive shaft were replaced; the valve body was overhauled for the second time; the engine pinging is still without solution.

At 41900 km the transfer case output seal was replaced.

At 46400 km the front rotors were replaced for the 3rd time (I was charged for the labor) ; the transfer case was resealed; the front differential pinion bearings were replaced; the engine is still pinging (I was told by the dealer to use premium fuel).

At 50000 km heavy engine pinging was considered "normal" by Chrysler engineering department.

At 51300 km the driver's recliner motor was replaced.

At 54200 km the intake manifold shield recall B06 was installed.

Now that my odometer shows 54500 km I have to bring the vehicle to the dealer to have the brake pulsation repaired for the 4th time; the alloy wheels are all corroded; the transfer case is noisy; the front end vibrates and is noisy; a water leak on the passenger side has developed.

An appointment with the Chrysler rep has been requested.

General Comments:

The Chrysler reps at head office in Windsor, Ontario are very annoying. They lack vehicle knowledge and people skills.

Serious quality issues with this vehicle such as the brakes, transfer case, transmission and front end.

Everyone talks about rotor problems on the 2000 GC. Mine has 28000 witn no brake problems. I live at 9000 ft. elevation and drop 4000 ft. in 19 miles on a steep winding road into town. If you drive like most people I drive with, you can smell their brakes and you will have all kinds of rotor problems. Get them hot and any brand will warp. My neighbor's wife can fry hers in 6 weeks on a Bonneville. Look at your driving habits!
