1992 Pontiac Sunbird SE 4 cylinder, 2.0 Liter

Summary:

Great car with few draw-backs

Faults:

I just bought the car about three weeks ago and here is what I found out so far:

~ There are mysterious puddles on the front driver's side and on the rear passenger side. Who knows where the leak is coming from. Can anyone help me out?

~When we first bought the car the transmission would skip and shake in between 25-35 mph. It seems to be gone now.

~The engine gets hot fast. Don't idle it for too long.

~Most recently my radiator had a minor leak. I just put some of that stop leak in it and it was fine.

Other than that no problems and hopefully it will stay that way.

General Comments:

~Other than the puddles of water on the carpet I do love this car.

~The acceleration on this car is awesome. It sounds wonderful too. It has that distinctive Pontiac hum to it.

~This car has very comfortable front seats, but don't try to fit adults in the back seat because they won't fit. The leg room in the back seat is terrible.

~Great fuel economy!

I recently had the same problem, my seats and floor, and roof liner would be soaked after I drove in the rain. Turns out it was my sunroof. To solve this problem I removed the sunroof and rubber gasket, in the bottom of the notch where the gasket seats I ran a bead of silicone then put it all back together. It was a cheap and quick fix. (Note there is a joint in the roof in the bottom of the groove, which is where my leak was)

Summary:

Can't say I miss it

Faults:

Ate batteries like no tomorrow.

Rusts like crazy in Canadian winters.

Refuses to start in -10c unless plugged in.

Poor auto. transmission, doesn't shift at right times.

ABS brakes suck.

Handling sucks, felt like the car was floating.

Head gasket and timing belt blew at the same time on a road trip in the states, ended up junking the car to a wrecker.

General Comments:

I should have known when I bought this car it was going to be a nightmare.

But the price was good and kilometres were low.

There were some good things about the car, however.

The interior was super comfortable, the stock speakers sounded great, and it was pretty good on gas.

But that cheap GM feel was everywhere.

I haven't bought a car since I junked this thing; walking to work is so much easier.

The car we purchased we have changed the battery 5 times, did you get some other advice as to what was really wrong with the car? Did you have to change the alternator and/or ignition module? If so, did you continue to still have problems? We have not gotten rid of the car because I would really like to know what is happening.

Thank you.

1992 Pontiac Sunbird

Summary:

Craptacular

Faults:

Head gasket went out on me not once...

Not twice...

Three times. It was to the point where different mechanics all refused to fix it as the problem would just keep coming back. They told me it was notorious for this model.

The back seat could not stand up to my toddler. And the engine fan stopped working. Always problems with the cooling/heating system.

General Comments:

This car was very fun to drive and excellent mileage. I am surprised to see the ratings on it being so good on this site. Maybe mine was cursed, but I have spoken to other owners (mostly on the side of the highway or 7-11 parking lots) and they run inot the same problem. I tell them the best fix is to buy a new car. Not safe.

If the car was such a lemon, why did you say you'd buy again from the same manufacturer?
