1996 Audi A4 SE 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Crack developed on windscreen after 2,000 miles - replaced under warranty. Two recalls, one for oil pump and recent one for the air-bag. Otherwise totally reliable. Dealer service could be better - I never seem to get a loan car.

General Comments:

Great car - much more class than a 3 series. The 1.8 loosened up after about 5,000 miles, but performance and fuel consumption not much to write home about. The build quality is superb - apart from minor stone chips, the car still looks like new. Just about to replace it with a 2.4 V6 A4 SE - so I must like it!

1996 Audi A4 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Drivers door dropped a bit, otherwise nothing.

General Comments:

Have completed over 50,000 miles, and no mechanical failings. Climate control excellent! Much better than old fashioned air con. Previous car BMW318 which was more fun on country roads, however Audi seems better built and is more comfortable on long trips and motorways.

1996 Audi A4 Avant SE 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Standard fit alarm keeps dropping out then mysteriously reactivates after a couple of days. Nothing else.

General Comments:

TDI a magnificent engine, makes a superb motorway cruiser. On German autobahns averaged 47mpg at speeds of 100-110mph. Very quiet engine once warmed up, barely 3000rpm at 90mph!

Dealer very good although first service quite pricey at just over £100.

Fit and finish excellent, looks very sexy with 8 spoke alloys and in blue pearl, Audi's best colour in my opinion. Have ordered an A3 so will be interesting to compare.

1996 Audi A4 Avant SE 2.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Minor paint damage on delivery. Oil low on delivery. Clock looses up to 5 mins per week. ABS warning lights after short journey. Odd electrical glitches e.g. windows have a mind of their own, odometer can reset when lights get turned off.

Hit by deer!

General Comments:

The automatic climate control is a pain, bring back old fashioned air-con - it's like having a kid playing with the controls all the time. The car is smooth and quiet and obviously designed for the autobahn, although it does tend to wander. It's not a driver's car when it comes to country lanes. The steering is imprecise and handling too stodgy. Minimal engine braking adds to the sense of lack of control. The very sharp brakes settle after a few 1000 miles and the engine loosens up considerably. Avoid silver as other moving objects (eg deer) find it difficult to spot. Standard audio is crap.
