1996 Audi A4 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A nice luxury commuter

Faults:

The clutch failed at 107000 miles.

The drivers seat tends to recline by a few inches over the space of a week or so.

Power steering hydraulic fluid is leaking and has to be topped up every 3 days. Not a big job to repair.

General Comments:

I love this car. It is very smooth, comfortable, cheap to run, and most of all for a 1.6 luxury saloon it is very fast.

The cabin is fairly dull with basic features, but everything is solid and works well.

My only big complaint is that the radio aerial which seems to be part of the rear windscreen does not work very well outside major cities.

1996 Audi A4 quattro 2.8 from North America

Summary:

I have always wanted an Audi, but now I am fearful to ever buy another

Faults:

Front control arms.

Rear wheel bearing.

Front control arms again!

Front wheel bearing.

Steering rack.

Fuel filter.

Power mirrors don't work and have gone brown.

Transmission is difficult to change gears.

Front control arms again! Audi replaced the lower ones under recall, however I had to pay for another upper.

Seized rear brake caliper.

General Comments:

The car I always wanted quickly became the car that caused an aversion to Audi.

Very slow, but handles great.

By far, the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

1996 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8L from North America

Summary:

Very Impressive

Faults:

The climate control console cuts on and off. It works fine, but sometimes I can't read the display.

The check engine light comes on when I drive over mountains. I had the code checked and it was the coolant temp sensor. I've replaced the sensor, but the light still comes on. No big deal it goes away in about a week or two.

The car seems to use more oil than it should. I use Mobil 1 synthetic. I have to constantly monitor the oil level. Not sure why this is. It doesn't seem to leak or blow smoke.

General Comments:

Overall the car is great. It rides smooth and is great in the snow. The inside of the car is gorgeous. The seats hold up very well. It shifts like a dream. Very well built. It lacks some power, but I'm not complaining. I've thought about getting something else, but I don't think I will be as satisfied. I take very good care of the car and it has taken care of me. The parts are expensive, but if you can't afford to fix it then you should not buy one. Buy a Honda. My previous car was an Acura Integra SE. I had no problems in 5 years, but it doesn't compare to an Audi.

1996 Audi A4 SE 1.9TDi from UK and Ireland

Nice car if you can afford the high maintenance costs

Faults:

Catalytic converter, (element worked loose causing blocked exhaust and power loss.

Immobilizer coil.

Lights on warning buzzer.

Windscreen washer motor.

Brake discs all 4 replaced twice.

Brake hoses.

Auxilary belt snapped.

Heater blower motor replaced.

N/S Rear brake caliper seized, (handbrake)

Rear suspension springs broken.

Rear shock absorbers.

General Comments:

I have spent thousands of pounds keeping this car on the road. I thought Audi were supposed to be reliable, but was proved very wrong. The car has been a constant drain on the wallet so I do not recommend you buy an Audi A4 unless you have deep pockets.

Do not use Audi dealers if your car is out of warranty. When garages see you have an Audi they put their prices up as they think you must be rich.

This year I have started to do my own repairs apart from normal servicing which is done by a local chain workshop. I have replaced rear discs and all shock absorbers and fitted Eibach pro-kit suspension springs, which has transformed the handling and saved me a fortune in labour costs.

I was going to sell the A4 this year, but as I have spent so much money on it, I decided that I may as well keep it or someone else would have a virtually new car with all the parts that have been replaced!

Just wanted to add that my A4 has broken again. The alternator belt has failed for 2nd time, and is being blamed on the alternator pulley and will cost me £350 at Audi dealer, what a bargain!
