Summary:

A fair car supported by terrible service

Faults:

Vibration at 60-75 mph.

Heated seat failed.

Check Oil Level indicator stays on.

General Comments:

The vibration was noticed almost immediately. It was returned to the dealer several times to balance and re-balance the tires. I then stumbled onto a GM service bulletin that described the trouble I was having. The dealer told me that it needed new tires before they would look any further. After replacing all four tires and having them computer balanced on the finest equipment available, the dealer still refused to take the action stated in the service bulletin.

Then I headed for the dealer owner's office where he finally saw to it that it was repaired properly.

I would like to know what was done to correct the problem.

Summary:

I love driving this car, but I am disappointed they quit making them

Faults:

Driver heated seat doesn't work.

The transmission was replaced under sales warranty @ 56k.

It has the vibration at higher speeds, it varies sometimes not until 75 mph sometimes at 65 mph. I am going to buy new tires even though the old ones are not worn out, suggestions?

I have to add a quart of Mobil 1 about 2500-3000 miles.

This one is strang, the stereo died about an hour after using mini disk, but came back two days later, no problems since.

General Comments:

This is the most fun car I have owned since my 1989 5.0 5sp Mustang over 10 years ago.

The oil is annoying, but I will put up with it as long as it doesn't cause any other problems.

Gas Mileage is great, I average 22 mpg, with a 4000 lb 300 hp car, that is incredible.

Handling is great, but the tires squeal easily, I will try upgrading.

Passengers love the heated seats (they make me jealous, the driver one doesn't work).

The Bose stereo system is incredible, 425 watts, and a 10 inch subwoofer from the factory, wow!

The car looks great, doesn't look like an old man's Caddy.

Faults:

I have had a vibration at 62 miles per hour since around 7,000 miles. The dealer has given me the usual run around with balancing the tires with no improvement. Someone has suggested a softer set of tires (H rated) to reduce the problem, but I have not tried it yet. There seems to be ample evidence for a class action suit.

I too have the same problem with a vibration somewhere between 60 and 70. I just had the wheels balance again and the vibration is still there? Other than this irritating vibration the car is excellent. The power is unreal from the Northstar engine.

Which tires did they solve the problem with??? The car came with Goodyear Integrity's or Goodyear Eagle's, both of which seem to contribute significantly to the problem. Or Michelins, which sometimes exhibit the problem, but other times are the cure for the problem.

Thanks in Advance.

Summary:

Pricey. However, fix the tire-vibration problem permanently and I would buy another

Faults:

The ride had excessive vibration. Cadillac has 'cherry picked" tires, using a Hunter machine which each Caddy dealer is now buying, and my now car does not vibrate. It took over a month and five visits and three sets of tires to stop the vibration at 70 mph. The real problem still exists. The problem is the cars are built with a suspension which will not tolerate common tire manufactures tire tolerances. The overlap of the belts and radial ply causes hard spots on the tires which are transmitted through the car. GM thinks this is a tire problem. Goodyear and Michelin know about the "road force" measurements and tell me it's a car problem. I agree with the tires manufactures. I want GM to agree to furnish the low-road-force tires (at my expense) for the life of the car, and they will not agree. I can't get the local tire dealers to understand what "road force" is, and therefore believe that once my car is off the guarantee, I will be holding the bag. GM is trying to stick us with a car that will not accept standard off-the-shelf tires. I have filed a lemon-law procedure. I want the car fixed so it will take off-the-shelf tires or replaced.

General Comments:

I like the car.

The car is roomy and comfortable.

The power and performance is impressive. It has great acceleration over 35 mph.

Highway trips are a joy.

I have an 2001 Seville STS that has the same problem at around 70 mph. I too have notified the dealership and they tell me that it is a wheel balance problem. I have had the wheels re-balanced and the problem still exists. I was almost considering that I may have a bent mag or other suspension problem until reading this article. If anyone has any tire recommendations or other information please let me know also. mpdmarysix@hotmail.com Thanks!

Summary:

Hateful dinosaur which just doesn't make sense outside the US

General Comments:

Chassis so hopeless that you can't use the only decent bit of the car - that luurrvely Northstar V8. Car cannot cope with British roads - too many corners and too many crests and dips which have it bottoming out and bouncing sickeningly every time. I've also never driven a car that rolls this much through the corners, and who allowed the combination of 300 bhp and front drive?? Ridiculous.

The tacky interior, and wallowy, floaty ride pale in comparison to the comedy 70's tyre squealing handling. All you need is the hubcaps to fly off and the picture would be complete. In time-honoured American tradition, the V8 returns mpg figures in the teens as well - okay when you pay $1 a gallon, but not so good when you pay £4 ($6) a gallon in the UK.

Have the guys at Cadillac ever driven a BMW, Mercedes, Rover, Audi or Lexus??? This car is so wide of the mark it's almost funny. Belongs in another era and another country.

No dissing of American cars intended (love the Viper, Shelby Cobra, Corvette etc) but this one is awful! I'm so glad this is only a temporary thing.

A very witty and insightful review.

I have owned an STS Cadillac for 18 months and love every minute of the 300 hp available - anybody who cannot cope with driving it is just faint hearted and should give it back immediately. I also have a Volvo R - the caddi makes it seem like a moped! If you work the Caddi hard enough the active ride wakes up and it has remarkable handling qualities. Do not buy a 300hp car if you are not prepared to use it.

Alan Young.
