1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ 2.3 Quad4 from North America

Summary:

The Quad4 rules!!

Faults:

You name it, I've replaced it. Since I have owned the car 12 years I have replaced.. head gasket, fuel pump, water pump, coil, 3 alternators, the main computer, clutch, this car ate front brakes, front wheel bearing, CV joint boots, 4 batteries, driver seat springs were shot, shocks, engine mount front twice and rear once, and everything else that occurs in normal wear and tear.

General Comments:

The car was very sporty looking and since I took excellent care of it I always got looks and comments about it's good condition.

I bought it new in 1990 and for the first 5 years it ran fine, then the repairs started getting heavier and heavier. In the last two to three years the car was nothing more than a mechanical nightmare with my last repair costing $1600.

Inside could have used some more creature comforts such as power seats and mirrors for the GTZ model. Heater controls were not at arms reach and you had to lean forward to get at them and the stock radio was a joke, well for 1990 I guess it was O.K.

Outside looks were a 10, but I just can't see why they didn't put disc brakes in the rear.

The engine was the Quad4 and came stock with 180hp. Power was always there and with some exhaust and other little upgrades 200hp was not hard to reach.

By the end of 12 years of owning the car I had warn every bit of smoothness and refinement out of it and it had plenty of rattles and just needed replacing.

1990 Chevrolet Beretta GT 3.1 Litre Multiport from North America

Summary:

Very quick, reliable and stylish!

Faults:

Very few things have gone wrong.

I Replaced a coolant hose, fuel pump, and I broke the motor mount (driver's side, nearest the firewall), but only because the engine had so much torque!

Seats were wearing badly, but I found a nice new set at a wreckers, and they look nicer than the old ones.

General Comments:

This car is very quick off the line, lacks a little power between 80-110km/h, but then takes off like mad from 120km/h to 170km/h, and has been up to 200km/h.

Rack-and-pinion steering is very nice.

Handles quite well around corners, despite it's weight.

I still get 35 miles / gallon, and it hardly burns any oil. Even at 415,000 km!!!

1990 Chevrolet Beretta GT 3.1 Multiport from North America

Summary:

Quick for the money

Faults:

I had to replace the transmission silinoid when I bought the car.

Seats are wearing. (The car is 12 years old.)

The front defroster area of the dashboard is starting to warp.

The paint is starting to chip on the hood.

I replaced the battery after 94000 miles because it was dead from my car stereo. (Oops!)

General Comments:

This car is very quick and handles really good. It hugs the road very well.

I've realized that this car attracts a lot of attention when the stereo is turned up.

Chicks dig Berettas.

The front seats of my Beretta are very comfortable, but there isn't enough leg room for 4 real sized people to comfortably ride a great distance.

1990 Chevrolet Beretta 2.2L I-4 from North America

Summary:

A great college car, cheap and good on gas

Faults:

Rear brakes - rebuilt new master cylinder at 130k. $300 USD.

Front brake - replaced both units at 135k, $550 USD.

Clutch - replaced at 138k, $550 USD.

Top of rear seat is sun-rotted.

Rips in the driver's seat.

Peeling paint from the bad factory metallic paint job.

2 new water pumps, $50 USD each.

General Comments:

If you think that's a lot of trouble, then you obviously like car payments more than I do. Considering I got 9 years and nearly 100k miles for $5000 USD, I would have to say I like this car a bit. I'm absolutely sure it was all set to go another 100k, but some guy rear-ended me. This is my eulogy for it.

Great gas mileage, a bit of performance. Never started to burn or use oil.
