1991 Chevrolet Lumina Euro 3.1 from North America

Summary:

A workhorse that is dependable

Faults:

-Engine mounts, a very bad surprise when you realize that your engine is resting on the street and that you are going anywhere.

-Brakes.Better get use to it, a common problem with this model.

General Comments:

A car that does what it was build to do, no more no less. A great ride on the highway, very comfortable. Always starts even in the most freezing weathers.

1991 Chevrolet Lumina Euro 3.1 Liter Unleaded from North America

Summary:

Dependable Bargain

Faults:

The previous owner never really kept the fluids checked and the camshaft was a main cause in the engine being replaced. That and the rear shocks are fairly weak in supporting the car while accelerating. Even for a front wheel drive, it leaves room for improvement.

General Comments:

Other than the engine replacement, the car runs short of perfect. It is very dependable and puts out 100 percent. Two problems that I've had occur was the trunk leaking, but the spoiler bolt holes were the issue at hand. I put in some Dynamax and it's never leaked again. The other is if you are a big music lover that owns subwoofers, the Lumina shakes like a baby rattle. If you go down that road, get a lot of Dynamax to sound proof the trunk and surrounding areas.

1991 Chevrolet Lumina Base 3.1 liter from North America

Summary:

A reliable family sedan

Faults:

Replaced the alternator twice.

Replaced the water pump once.

Had to replace the front brakes on two occasions, rear brakes are original with only about 60 percent wear.

Rear facing head cracked around 70000 miles, rapidly leaking out coolant.

Transmission seal is starting to leak, and when it's low, the torque converter control solenoid locks the torque converter, cutting off the car when coming to a stop.

General Comments:

This car has been reliable; with heavy use for the last 10 years inspite of the few problems I've had with it. Always felt comfortable jumping in and taking it on a long trip.

I feel the 3.1 liter engine doesn't produce enough power for a car of that size, although it is adequate for general needs.

Just bought a 91 Lumina from a friend of mine that is a whole saler. Picked it up dirt cheap. I also have a problem with the torque converter locking up causing the car to stall. Disconnected the solenoid to see if it stops stalling. Question is do I just have to install a new solenoid to fix this problem? Or can I just leave it disconnected? Will this cause more problem up the road? Any Help will sure help. Robert Wixon.

1991 Chevrolet Lumina Euro Coupe 3.1 from North America

Summary:

A gas gussler with testicular deficiencies

Faults:

At 90000 the front brakes, alternator, and windshield wiper switch went.

At 100000 miles the transmission lost 3rd and 4th gear.

General Comments:

I am just a poor college kid scraping by, I don't know everything about cars, but I like to take care of things myself. My Lumina is very difficult to work on. I would never again buy a Lumina, which was calculated to self destruct at 100,000 miles. It is hard to park and the transmission has given me problems since the day I bought it.

1991 Chevrolet Lumina Eurosport 3.1 V6 from North America

Faults:

Replaced two starters.

Replaced driver's side window motor.

Replaced motor mounts, lost count.

Replaced coils / coil pack.

Replaced radiator.

Replaced two water pumps.

Replaced crankshaft position sensor.

Replaced throttle position sensor.

Replaced A/C compressor twice.

General Comments:

I bought this car new on the lot in 1991 and have driven it hard ever since.

The repairs made were to be expected. It has been a workhorse, but it does require that you raise the hood once every week or two for inspection and preventative maintenance.

At 187,000 miles it's still on the road.
