1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8 from North America

Summary:

Obviously don't recommend this. Major repairs sholdn't be necessary

Faults:

ABS motor went out just after warranty expired. Almost $850 repair required. I just pulled the fuse instead of repairing it. With the fuse in, the motor ran continuously, even with the car shut off!

Now, coolant is getting into engine, either head gasket or (hopefully) intake manifold. Could also be cracked block. This car was well cared for (all services at specified intervals. There is no reason that this engine should be gone like this at under 200,000 miles! $1500 repair estimate.

Also, after the dealer did some kind of recall on the parking brake, they now say the cable system is rusted out and needs to be replaced, requiring the rear axle to come off to do it! $750 repair estimate.

Radio lights all burned out at 100,000 miles. Can't replace bulbs, need new radio.

Anyone want to buy it?

General Comments:

Truck WOULD have been great were it not for costly repairs. Ran very well up to 120,000 miles, but should have run for much longer.

Very noisy interior.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado LS 5.3 Liter from North America

Summary:

I'm very happy with my truck

Faults:

Throttle tends to be stiff at times. Have to apply extra force to the accelerator when starting from a stop. That's about it.

General Comments:

This has been a great truck. I follow the maintenance schedule and have had no significant problems at all (knock on wood).

1999 Chevrolet Silverado LE 5.3L from North America

Summary:

The vehicle has been just O.K

Faults:

The throttle was notorious for sticking.

The parking brake doesn't hold.

Intake plenum gasket replaced under warranty.

A couple of seat belt and brake hose issues have been handled per recall.

General Comments:

The parking brake issue is getting some air time by GM as future recall, hopefully to be addressed while I still own vehicle.

Another Silverado owner told me to clean the throttle body to alleviate the throttle sticking. Problem solved. Dealer service dept. should have caught that one.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado LS 5.3 Liter from North America

Summary:

Awesome truck

Faults:

The first problem with my truck is that when I go to start the truck on a cold day, about 45-50 degrees outside. I live in Houston so it doesn't get that cold. The truck's RPM's will raise to about 900 down to 300. It only does this at idle, and it stops once the truck warms up. But before it warms up its hard to control the truck at a light because it keeps pushing forward when the RPM's raise. I would like to know if anybody has had any similar problems and/or knows how to fix this.

The second problem I am having is my gas mileage has dropped from about 13-14MPG in the city to about 11.5. Just recently I took a road trip and drove 65-70 mph and only got 13.5 mpg. The truck has about 93000 miles and is a Z71 with a 5.3L, with 4:10 gears.

General Comments:

The truck has been very good and these are the only problems I have had with the truck besides the regular throttle sticking and clunking of the steering wheel.

I had the same problem with the idle and "pushing forward" at the light. It's a vacuum leak. $100 to fix.

Summary:

Not real happy,Owned Chevys all my life

Faults:

ABS light came on and motor kept running.

Service engine light keeps coming on.

Service 4WD light keeps coming on.

General Comments:

I called GM customer service and kept complaining about the $1200 bill to fix the ABS system. They finally paid $800 for the parts and I had to pay labor. the service engine light is supposed to be the gas cap. replaced it. Light still comes on. The service 4WD light I don't know yet. Thats what I'm trying to find out now.

The SES light coming on can be caused by a million things, not just the gas cap. Changing the gas cap is the "quick fix" people always suggest because it can cause the light to come on and is something easy to do. You need to get a dealer to check the engine codes with their scanner and really fix the problem. Ditto on the "check 4wd" light.
