1989 Citroen AX GT 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Most underrated hot hatch ever!!!

Faults:

Electrics. The electrics are very poor on AX's, mainly due to poor earths.

Heater matrix (still not fixed!).

Nothing else major.

General Comments:

This car is very, very quick for the size of the engine. It also has great handling which can be made even better with a set of 15's and lowering.

The best thing about the GT is it's fairly rare and generally cheap. It can beat all the Saxo VTR boys.

The GT may not be built very well, but it adds to the character of the car, something it has plenty of!!

The spec is also very good for the cost (I paid £650 for mine).

Electric windows.

Tilt, remove sunroof.

Sports seats.

Body kit.

Central locking.

I really love this car and would recommend it very highly.

1989 Citroen AX GT 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great fun if you can ever get it going

Faults:

Head gasket went at 108,000.

Wipers.

New pads and discs.

Not much else apart from a daily starting problems, still unsolved.

General Comments:

This car is seriously quick for the size of the engine, it's also very light but this can be a real disadvantage in the wet because driving at only normal speeds can become difficult and dangerous.

The brakes are very bad, for the power of the car, even with new discs and pads they still are rubbish.

It looks good from the outside and the interior, but is very flimsy and dents very easy.

1989 Citroen AX Splash 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An economists, and young persons like myself's dream

Faults:

Main oil seal needed replacing and also the rocker box seal.

General Comments:

The car is a good handler and faster than my previous car (Fiesta.)

I do however think it would have been an advantage to have a rear-screen wiper.

The glove-box design is very poor though - subsequently I have given it a lower mark than I would have liked on comfort.

1989 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap, fast and fun...

Faults:

Not that much considering its age.

The drivers side central locking solenoid went.

Fan belt.

One or two interior lights went.

General Comments:

For its engine size this car is seriously quick.

Say "good bye" to many hot hatches with a 1400 or 1600cc engine, this car will eat them.

Lacks top end power though, only a 112mph top speed.

Also it's a bit noisy, but that's due its light weight construction.

The electric windows, central locking and other bits are a bonus.

The handling is pretty hot too...

That's the good thing about the GT... it's so light it eats most hatches for brekkie! It does have a poor top end, but that's due to the short gearing...

1989 Citroen AX RE 1.1 carb petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A rust-resistant box of fun

Faults:

Ignition switch return spring.

Passenger door lock.

Passenger seat weld broke.

General Comments:

Nippy for a 1.1, handling is awful, but it is very reliable and starts first time, every time.

A good car for ICE installations, but needs a lot of sound proofing.

1989 Citroen AX GT 1.4 twin carb from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Average

Faults:

Mainly electrical faults.

But when something was fixed, something else always went.

Fast car, but not up to being thrashed all the time.

Had a new gear box and driveshaft after 4,000 miles.

General Comments:

Good car, just needs TLC to keep it running OK. Hard to start when cold and wet.

Don't know where you got the troublesome starting from.... mine's done 100k and starts first time? As for thrashing it... mine gets a daily caning and still it begs for more...

My GT is a '89 model with 73,000 on the clock, and the car just loves being screwed about. You just can't drive it sensibly because of the feeling of the twin choke, it's amazing.

1989 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

A couple of minor things, but they were covered under the warranty.

General Comments:

You can't beat em they're great!

I've now got a Saxo VTR but it's got nothing on the GT for speed, it seemed so much more fun to throw around.

A great little rally car, I was lucky when I bought mine that it was owned by a old lady who had it from new, she keep it so well and I don't think she ever went over 50 mph. I paid a lot for it, but it was in great nick with great miles on the clock and FSH. I've not seen one to this day in any better condition.

I loved the interior with the red fleck and the plastic dash and the heavy steering, it was all part of having the AX. You can't beat em and they are dirt cheap now, but it's rare to find one with a low mileage and a good body.

One thing though, they don't rust!

And you can blow any hot hatch away with in reason!

The engine is as hard as nails.

It just kept saying "go on, give me more".

Not a bad word on this beauty!

In three years it cost me nothing!

Underrated indeed.
