Summary:

Great ride, cheap to run, buy the turbo diesel

Faults:

Done all brakes pads and discs.

Suspension regulator and front spheres, otherwise just standard service costs. Even the brakes were expected at that mileage.

Prices have been pretty reasonable too even on the suspension which I had been warned was pricey.

General Comments:

This is a great car but get the turbo-diesel or even better the HDi (common-rail). I can get late 40's in mpg but she is a real snail when it comes to acceleration.

Ride is incredible and she'll cruise at 80mph no trouble (once you get there).

Comfort marks 8 / 10
Dealer Service marks 7 / 10
Running Costs (higher is cheaper) 8 / 10

Faults:

Nothing! It is surprising given all the little problems with my father`s old BX.

General Comments:

I bought the car in 1996 with 120000 km and with 165000 now - it has had only the usual maintenance. Engine is lazy.

Superb ride and well suspended but I regret that the front seats are too large and do not maintain well.

Overall a good family car with a lot of space.

Comfort marks 10 / 10
Dealer Service marks 3 / 10
Running Costs (higher is cheaper) 5 / 10
Overall marks (average of all marks)

Faults:

Suspension leaks.

Electric seat switch broken.

New brake pads.

Electric window motor.

Windscreen washer level sensor.

Water in fuel filter sensor.

Squeeks from dashboard.

Rear electric window motor.

General Comments:

An excellent engine let down by poor build quality and very poor reliability of electrics. Ride is good and road holding good enough. A good long distance cruiser especially if the company pays for the maintenance.

Dealer Service marks 8 / 10
Running Costs (higher is cheaper) 4 / 10

Faults:

Hydraulic suspension pump and hoses have failed and been replaced. Lots of small things eg. mercury switch in tailgate, central locking, electric windows etc etc.

General Comments:

Lovely ride and perfect for motorway driving. Economical (and relatively powerful for the consumption) on fuel. But things just love to fall to bits on this car. Excellent dealer service (Whitechapel) but they do get to have my car rather too often for my liking. Would buy another if new models prove more reliable. When it's working it's unbeatable for the price.

Faults:

Nothing!!!!

General Comments:

Performance is outstanding, best diesel I have driven. Ride is shockingly poor, pneumatic suspension bounces the car all over the place.

Radio controls are difficult to operate at night. Dash has poor ergonomics. Controls on s/wheel a nice touch.

Nice. Best features? Engine and exterior looks.

Extremely reliable, wouldn't buy another because of sea sickness ride. Shame!

> pneumatic suspension bounces the car all over the place.

You need to re-pressurize or swap the spheres. It is normal maintenance and makes all the difference.

Faults:

Since a year the engine has had serious problems, when slowing down it just shuts down. Specialists hired by Citroen dealers have not been able to solve this, on bad days the car will shut down every time you release the gas before stopping. I have read on a Dutch car magazine web site that it is a known problem with early Xantia's and that it is an engine management problem.

General Comments:

When it works, this is a great comfortable car. The suspension saved our life once (I was able to swerve by a suddenly oncoming fire truck).

I'd the same ignition fault too and this was rectified by replacing the ECU during the warranty period. I guess a replacement chip (IC) would also solve the problem.

Faults:

General Comments:

A very enjoyable car, some minor problems perhaps, but let down badly by the apathetic dealer network.

I would definitely buy another, but perhaps not from the same dealer.

General Comments:

It would be a great car if it didn't keep costing so much to repair.

Faults:

Exhaust System full replacement, problems with Dash Lights (Fuses) and Door Frame came slightly away from Door inside (but fixed during normal service).

General Comments:

Get Air Con as an extra, vital.

Slightly understeers into corners at high speed e.g. Motorway Ramps, acceleration could be a tad better.

Seats can be uncomfortable on long drives as if you are tall, to get leg room you have to stretch to touch the wheel. Otherwise after 70,000 miles in 3 years its been a great car.

Citroen suspension really nice.
