1994 Citroen Xantia SX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Look after it and it will look after you

Faults:

Handbrake cable snapped.

Head gasket leaked oil at 155k miles.

ABS sensor failed.

Clutch cable snapped.

Dashboard lights just gone out.

General Comments:

Totally reliable and has only let me down with the clutch cable incident.

Comfy car and reliable if you observe the service intervals and have a trustworthy garage to hand.

My car is now officially worth £13.00, yet it takes me 500 miles a week without fail and returns 50 mpg.

Just because they have done a few miles doesn't mean they are worn out nails!

1994 Citroen Xantia LX 1.8i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A good bargain, reliable and overall a good runner

Faults:

Front wheel bearings wore out very quickly.

Tracking was slightly out of alignment.

Front tires wore faster than expected.

Hydraulic pump failed while traveling at 40mph and turning on a roundabout.

General Comments:

The car is wonderful to drive, comfortable, but a little noisy on some road surfaces.

I find the drive position a little low, despite being 6 foot tall and my wife can barely see over the steering wheel.

The front pillars seriously obstruct your view at junctions and the rear view mirror makes half the windscreen disappear from view.

1994 Citroen Xantia 2.0i 2.0 cc from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Superb in everything

Faults:

Unfortunately, I did not own the car long enough for any faults to develop

General Comments:

The Citroen Xantia 2.01 1994 model was a beautiful car to drive. When one got used to the automatic transmission it was extremely responsive.

It is the most comfortable car I have ever owned, or for that matter ridden in.

Like all citroens it under-steered, but held the road like glue.

The only disadvantage was the indicator for the automatic gears, which could be better illuminated.

If you had held on to it, you probably would have regretted doing so. Agree with the excellent road holding, and the handling is soft but accurate. The ride is good, but not THAT amazing, have driven plenty of standard suspension setups that are just as cosseting.

For us, niggling electrical problems, rattles, difficult cold starting, patchy build quality and maintenance that can only be properly done by pricey dealers or specialists put us off, and we went back to Japanese. They're also hard to get parts for in NZ. Sure x-France you can get anything, but how much do you want to invest in a car worth less than 5k?

The Europeans are very enthused about these cars, they must have a lower expectation of reliability and durability than New Zealand drivers.

Stay away unless you're an enthusiast.

1994 Citroen Xantia SX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Economical comfort

Faults:

Clutch cable clip went whilst driving the car home on the first day - cost £60 to replace.

Rear height corrector seized. £180 replacement.

General Comments:

Despite the two issues I'm very pleased with the car. Very comfortable, very good amount of kit, looks nice, very economical (49mpg - costs the same to run as my 1.3 Felicia!) etc.

I'm very attached the car already :)

The fact that most people shy away from Citroen's means the car was very cheap to buy.

1994 Citroen Xantia SX 1.9TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good buy secondhand if you find a good one

Faults:

Clutch replaced at 124000

Lower front suspension bushes 100,000 front flexible brake pipes 100,000 Handbrake cables

Exhaust system 120,000

Glow plugs 90,000.

General Comments:

A practical well equipped car which has proved more reliable than my previous BX Turbo Diesel. Excellent on motorway city driving spoilt by notchy gearchange and lack of power below 2000rpm.
