1997 Daewoo Cielo GLE 1.5 from Peru

Summary:

Reliable and economic

Faults:

AC malfunction since 70.000 km.

Electric front left window system failure 2 times.

Poor audio and cabin ventilation systems.

General Comments:

I own an Automatic model purchased new.

This car with the appropiate services every 5000 kms avoid any mechanical problems.

Really reliable.

I added a LPG fuel system at 70,000 km which makes it really economic, also replacement parts are too.

Big cabin and trunk space, and very comfortable for a medium size model.

Engine mantains its compression almost like the first kilometers.

I'm very happy with my car.

Finally, I think that a good car like the Cielo with a good driver could walk for kilometers and kilometers.

1997 Daewoo Cielo GLX 1.5 DOHC from Colombia

Summary:

Worth every cent I paid for it

Faults:

When I just bought it, the entire clutch had to be repaired.

I managed to overheat the engine (still wondering why and how this happened...)

The high voltage wiring to the distribution rotor was burned.

I noticed that a holder under the engine was broken; this seems to be a common repair, according to the mechanic.

The "check engine" light went on today.

General Comments:

I am very happy with the general performance of the car, but maintenance is now a serious issue, when it comes to money. However I would rater repair it because you cannot get this comfort, space and performance for the price. Originally, I paid some US$6,000. Now, the US dollar exchange rate went down, so it would be some US$8,500.

1997 Daewoo Cielo GLE 1.6 petrol from India

Summary:

Very good if you have the money for gas

Faults:

Air conditioner failed several times, even after repeated service. Fan belt got worn out. Engine oil leak due to oil pressure valve. Brake Pads were changed. New tires for all 4+1 wheels. Wheel alignment was needed. Car didn't do more than 110Km/h, Probably dude to alignment faults. Several minor fixes.

General Comments:

The car has been very comfortable to drive. The repairs since I bought the car cost ed around $500 till today. Considerably less compared to the amount of gas it consumed. Everything else is so so.

The engine is very good for Indian cities.

It some what skidded while I took a quick turn.

Fuel efficiency 6 - 7Km/liter.

Sounds like every single one of the complaints can be traced back to driving style. Including fuel economy. Belts break. They are rubber turning on hot metal hundreds of times a minute. Especially if you run your engine at excessively high RPMs redlining it all of the time. This also wears out the bearings in your air conditioning. You will have either performance or cold air. Not both. Whether you have a 150hp engine or an 800hp engine.

We've had quite a few problems since buying it.

Head Gasket blew at 150,000

Clutch wearing out at 153,000

Gear stick hard to control.

General Comments:

The car takes quick at lights, accelerates well.

1997 Daewoo Cielo GL 1.5 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Great value for money

Faults:

Fuel gauge replaced in warranty 3 times.

Water pump went at 87000 km (after radiator flush)

Head Gasket at started to leak @87500 km (caused by overheating - due to water pump)

General Comments:

Overall this has been a fairly reliable car over the 6 years that we have owned it. Interior and exterior still in excellent condition (apart from gear shift boot), with repairs being really no more expensive than any other car.

Performance is OK (hey its only a small engine), handling is good and so is comfort - air con is outstanding, good fuel economy.

Most impressed by the amount of room with the back seat folded down.
